Tossing up some fresh thread until someone comes along with actual content. In the meantime, here’s Max.

The confidence of youth

That 25-pound lab puppy semi-teabagging the doberman would be my friend’s awesome dog Mossy, whose personality comes pretty close to the Aristotelian ideal of ‘dog’. She goes way up on my kidnap-if-I-could-get-away-with-it dog list.

Max still puts up a fight when other dogs get up in his face an’ at, but on a warm day sooner or later Max will just flop over and say f*ck it.

Kind of like Max’s friend Lillemet the mastiff did way back when.

In other news, make sure to find out whether your computer has a hidden virus called ‘DNS Changer’ that could cause your net connection to go dark this coming Monday, or start mainlining malware or something like that. Go here to do a quick check.

    David Brooks:

A decade or so ago, people started writing books and articles on the boy crisis. At the time, the evidence was disputable and some experts pushed back. Since then, the evidence that boys are falling behind has mounted.

    Say what?

Seriously, you’d think a New York Times writer would know better than to use the words boys, behind, and mounted in the same sentence — particularly in a sentence ostensibly about education.

Is David trying to tell us something?

TPM (yeah, I know) is reporting that Obama is killing Mittens with words of kindness about MittenCare, or whatever it is the Mass. law’s name goes by.

I’d say this campaign is gonna be a knee slapper, exceptin’ Romney might have nothing left to run on but a buttfull of dog whistle by the time autumn rolls around. So far, I’m not so sold on his upstanding character to think he won’t go to that well if he’s desperate. If anyone wants to convince me it won’t really sink to that, I’m all ears (well, eyes).

The problem is that DNSChanger rewrites your network settings to point to a set of DNS servers that the malware writers controlled.

Malware writers could use bad DNS servers to impersonate legitimate websites in order to obtain banking info or usernames and passwords. (The article below also said that it redirected users to bad sites in order to drive up ad impressions illegitimately.) They could also have been command-and-control servers for a botnet that could be used to relay spam, perform denial-of-service-attacks, or worse.

The DNS servers were seized by authorities, who cleaned them up and left them running in order to give users time to get their systems fixed. Now they are talking about taking them offline; at last count they estimate 300,000 machines are still infected with DNSChanger and will lose the ability to resolve domain names when the servers go offline, effectively knocking them off of the internet until the Trojan is removed and their network settings are restored.

Here’s a decent summary, and info on finding tools to see if you are infected by DNSChanger.

    reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57322316-263/fbi-tackles-dnschanger-malware-scam/

    Schrodinger’s Candidate

From Sully’s website but it wouldn’t let me cut n’ paste so I retyped it and he said a reader sent it and that it was “going around the internet”

Until specific voters or interest groups look at a Romney, it is impossible to know his position. The outcome will vary depending on the observer. When the box containing the Romney is closed, all positions are possible, and the only certainty is that Schrodinger’s cat will end up strapped to the roof of the car.

    I find this amusing.

I don’t think that’s a naive viewpoint. Nate Silver’s Election Model (right sidebar) has President Obama beating RMoney by more than 2 to 1 (68.3% of the time v. 31.7%) out of ten thousand runs, assuming Nate still uses 10k runs per forecast.

Since Nate’s model is pretty much the most sophisticated election forecast being updated & published on a regular basis, the view that Obama has the advantage hardly seems naive.

Obviously, I’m not going to be putting money in the hat for George Zimmerman’s bail. But surely he can’t complain that the media didn’t treat him fairly; if anything, he has been treated more fairly than he would like. If it weren’t for a public outcry, he wouldn’t be facing a charge of murder two.

Since Zimmerman has also been accused of reckless vigilantism, dishonesty (by the judge, no less) and stupidity, I’m sure he’s been accused of racism. After all, he is white whereas Trayvon Martin was black. Zimmerman’s one black great-grandfather doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t be a racist. But I for one am content to let trial testimony show whether or not he picked on Trayvon out of racism.

I’m quite mystified as to where in this case Zimmerman’s lawyer sees an affront to the US Constitution.

We just adopted a second dog. Maggie is a 2-3 year old Lab/Boxer mix that was left on the side of road after being hit by a car in Alabama. She was then moved from a high-kill shelter in AL to a shelter in Waterloo, NY where she sat for several months. She has a minor injury to her paw or leg and to her jaw. She’s super sweet and she’s been a great addition to our home.

The other dog in this picture is our 11-year old dog, Gypsy, also adopted from a shelter that we theorize is a whippet-terrier mix.
