Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

    I am in a grumpy mood. Thought I had secured a new place to live (for August 1), but it fell through today. So I had to reboot the now increasingly frantic apartment search. And I’ve got a doctor’s appointment downtown tomorrow that is going to take a huge chunk of time out of the day.

    Grumble, grumble, grumble. Probably should just go to bed.

    Arlington/Falls Church swath of NoVa.

    There seem to be a lot of places out there, what with CraigsList and just seeing apartment buildings and signs as I am out and about, but winnowing them down and getting to the point of actually looking at viable places is very tedious. Lots of no replies, no call-backs, interminable phone menus and voice-mail cul-de-sacs. Frustrating and time-consuming.

    Okay, now I am going to bed, but I just got a small ray of light: an e-mail about an apartment on CraigsList that is one of my top prospects. Yay! Possible bad news is that the place could be too good, as the e-mail said the place is being shown by appointment only between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. WTF?! Which I can’t do tomorrow because of a doctor’s appointment. Dagnab it.

    Boy, am I happy that I went to a school without a Division 1 football program. The football team, Division 2 when I was there, was something that was fun to go watch on a Saturday night, and that’s about it. They canned the team a few years after I graduated, primarily because the NCAA decided that schools that were otherwise Division 1 couldn’t have a Division 2 football teamm. Why? I have no idea.

    @Raven:

    Leveling out now that the docs have pretty much spelled out the problems. It turns out that I did have pneumonia and got it from inhaling some milk about three weeks ago. When they did the CT scan they found that I have fairly advanced RA and it has invaded my lungs to a degree that surprised them (and me). I’ve had problems with gout in the past and thought some of the joint problems I had been having were because of that. Nope, I have it pretty bad, enough that I dropped smoking that evening and haven’t looked back at it one bit.

    I would say that it got my attention, fully. They are setting me up with a specialist in Medford, Oregon and I’m waiting for the call for the appointment date. It explains a lot of things but at 52 years old, this has been going on since my mid-30’s. No other doc caught it, and I’ve seen plenty of docs with all of the surgeries I’ve had related to my work injuries. One clue was that I have a recurring problem with scar tissue building up in the surgical areas that they have had to go in and clean up several times now.

    I guess my body hates itself.

    Like everything else in life, it’s another thing to have to deal with, just like we all do. Now it’s just my turn at dealing with the crap a lot of us have to. As they say, shit happens.

    I have to go do a few things but will be back on in just a bit. I hope your are doing everything I would while over there in the land of sun, sea and beaches. :)

    I forgot to mention that the nodule they found will be on hold for another six months then there will be another CT scan to see if it has changed. As the doc said, “cancer can’t be cured with antibiotics”. The coughing up blood stopped within two days of starting the Z-pac antibiotics, thus it was because of the pneumonia, not the nodule bleeding. He said that the Fleischner Society recommendation on the nodule calls for a CT scan in a year for nodules less than 4mm in size but he is having me get a follow up CT scan in six months because of the damage to my lungs from RA.

    Did anybody see the new miniseries in which Sigourney Weaver plays an ex first lady that wants to be president? Wondering if it’s as awful as it sounds.

    @MikeJ

    Haven’t even heard of it, but now can’t get the image of her galumphing onto the debate stage while wearing an exoskeleton out of my head.

    OT: the shitstorm over the woman in Indiana who tried to kill herself while pregnant, survived, lost the baby and is being prosecuted for murder just gets shittier and stormier.

    @jaywillie: Why does this sound like a Romney organization?

    Most of the 1,000 activists who emailed protests to the IOC since earlier this week have received replies signed by the Media Relations department of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) which indicated that the Committee thought Burma and Myanmar were two separate countries.
    __
    “The torch relay clothes were NOT made in Burma. They were manufactured in Myanmar,” said the response. “In fact they were made in the exact same factory that produces clothes for GAP, North Face and other major clothing labels.”
    __
    When it was pointed out in subsequent emails from activists that Burma and Myanmar were in fact the same country, the department apologized for the “misinformation,” admitted that the pants and shell top of the uniform were manufactured at a textile plant in “Burma/Myanmar” and noted that their manufacture “complied with all applicable laws.”

    @MikeJ:

    Is her screen name by any chance Ellen Mitchell and her husband died of a stroke?

    @MikeJ

    With a title to look up, here’s some cast info. And apparently she’s divorced, not a widow, in the program.
