A gunman wearing an Afghan uniform turned his weapon against foreign trainers working for NATO in the western province of Herat on Sunday, killing three, in a grim 24 hours for the coalition which also saw five NATO soldiers killed.
__
The latest rogue shooting by an Afghan in a police or army uniform happened at a regional training centre in the relatively peaceful western province near Afghanistan’s border with Iran, which is normally patrolled by Italian forces.

Violence in Afghanistan is at its fiercest since U.S.-led Afghan troops overthrew the Taliban government in 2001. Insurgents have extended their reach from traditional strongholds in southern and eastern areas to parts of the country once considered relatively safe. Source
I’m starting this free course on the history, technology, and security of the Internet at Coursera today. The teacher is @drchuck from the University of Michigan, and it’s looking really good so far. The coursework just started today, it’s absolutely free, and maybe we could get a nice Balloon Juice study group going.
There are other courses starting this week, all free (I’m also doing the Introduction to Finance which for an online course looks rather hard!), and they have a schedule for upcoming classes. There’s a course on Securing Digital Democracy starting September 3 which I have also signed up for, being taught by another UM professor. Lots of other courses (heavy on the computer/math side), and lots of other good universities participating. Plus, I mentioned it’s free right now. Dr. Chuck just tweeted that his course is getting one signup per minute right now.
Anyway, gratuitous plug over.

@Joseph Nobles: I signed up for the logic course that starts in September with the professor from Stanford. There are some really cool classes on there. I’d sign up for the class you’re doing, but I’ve got a grant application I have to knock out by August 10th, so no time right now.

@Joseph Nobles: Thanks. I just signed up for the single-variable Calc class (I took AP Calc AB, but that was 16 years ago) and the Greek & Roman Mythology. Tempted by “History of the World Since 1300”, too.

It is impossible to overstate how important Paris Is Burning was. Thank you for the reminder.

@Phylllis & @R-Jud: Cool! I almost went with the logic and the Greek and Roman mythology course, but I saw them after the Finance course, and the syllabus for Finance really does look tough for an online course. I did get the Intro to Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh profs that starts in January, and I’m slowing listening to the Open Yale Ancient Greek history course, too.

I haven’t seen too much break-vogueing in Seattle. At R-Place it seemed to mostly be pole action on the second floor.

It’s the only offering in classics right now.
