Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

The willow is too close to the house.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Petty moves from a petty man.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Everybody saw this coming.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Second rate reporter says what?

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

He really is that stupid.

Beware the bear cam

Although there are many others, this is one reason why I follow Lizzie Oh Really on the twitter. She discovered the wild bear livecam on the same site that hosts the Golden Retriever puppies. Last week the #bearcam hashtag she launched one afternoon pretty much captured the entirety of my follow list by nightfall. It got to be big enough a thing to get a Gawker mention.

Evenings seem to the best time to catch the bear on salmon action. A lot of bears there right now. Sadly, waterfall bear is missing. He’s my favorite. But fair warning. It’s hypnotic. You think you won’t stay when you get there, but suddenly it’s half an hour later and you find yourself cheering when they catch that fish…

Are there any vegan bears? Being a vegan, I really can’t stand to watch them eat the poor fishies.

This is awesome. I saw one catch a fish! Someone must be operating the camera because it zoomed in on a specific bear for awhile.

Waterfall bear is back. When they catch the salmon, I can’t help but think “awesome sashimi, and so fresh!”

@Violet: It seems like somebody must be working it because it zooms in on the action, but not consistently. Unless it’s connected to certain bears by some kind of sensor trigger. I think most of them are tagged.

Meanwhile, waterfall bear is back. I always cheer for him as the underdog. He doesn’t catch many fish with that strategy.

    Gotta love Wonkette Sunday headlines:

    WWJD? 12:26 PM JULY 29, 2012
GOOD SUNDAY NEWS: CHRISTIAN PUPPETEER WAS ARRESTED BEFORE HE COULD MURDER AND EAT A CHILD

    http://wonkette.com/479475/good-sunday-news-christian-puppeteer-was-arrested-before-he-could-murdered-and-eat-a-child

Using online monikers that investigators traced to their computers, Brown and Arnett discussed killing — what they called “snuffing” — children as young as 2. Arnett described what different human body parts tasted like, roasted or cooked in a skillet, according to the complaint.

@Hal: The weirdest thing about that story is that they don’t say whether Arnett was arrested too. Is it legal to eat children in Kansas?

Maybe it’s like Scalia’s opinion on the constitution. If it’s not specifically stated, it’s not something Government can regulate.

Meh. You can see bears in action here in Pittsburgh, up close and personal. They go shopping in our malls, you can greet them on your screened in porch in the morning, and find them hanging out at the local donut shop. All true stories from just the past three months or so. In the fucking city and close environs. No one around here is feeling all that warm and fuzzy about bears these days.

Looking at the bear/salmon cam I was reminded of the bear eating fish scene in Brave. The waterfall is also hypnotic to watch. (I really liked Brave. Great story and lesson about life and love.)

My motto is: I’ll just watch until they catch one more fish. OK, maybe one more.

OTOH, waterfall bear just caught one so I should quit while I am happy.

@Yutsano: And now I feel shame.

9:40 Alaska time and Da Bearz are busy. There are six on cam, one of which I presume is Waterfall Bear. Two of the bears have caught fish, and they (the bears) just sat down in the water and snarfed them down like they were eating hot dogs at a ball game. Top grade sashimi no doubt, but mess-ssy.
