Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

In my day, never was longer.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

I did not have telepathic declassification on my 2022 bingo card.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Republicans in disarray!

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Okay, let’s do Triple Rock on Shattuck in Berkeley tomorrow at 7 for the BJ meet-up. I may be up for a second BJ meet-up on Friday for those who can’t make it on Wednesday.

A bit of a drive from Monterey, but I might be able to make it tomorrow. But I could definitely do Friday as I’ll be across the bay on Friday in SF.

I didn’t hang around the other day to find an answer to my question if any Ballooners live in the KC area.

If so, would love to have a meet up sometime.

I may make it tomorrow night; Friday is more likely.

When it was announced that Netroots would be in San Jose next year, I started thinking about where to have a BJ meetup. My first thought was the Britannia Arms, but since then the Original Gravity Public House has opened up. If it stays in business (no certain thing in downtown SJ), I would propose it. Something to keep in mind, anyway.

Must be some damn good pizza.

I can sum up my thoughts as follows:
    Q: Worth a three-hour round trip?
    A: Yup!

Locally, we have great thin-crust “artisanal” pizza (world-class, honest) but nobody who does a Chicago style remotely as good as Zachary’s. Damnit, now I’m hungry!

Apparently BJers need to take it upon themselves to have local Balloon Juice meet-ups. It is good DougJ makes this one come about.

We could call them Tunch Brigade Conventions, Lilly Learn-Ins or anything that makes it sound like drinking is the major focus of the group.

  35. 35.

    Formica

    July 31, 2012 at 5:48 pm

Are lurkers welcome? I bought a furminator because of Cole’s experiences with Tunch. I think that counts as loyalty. Doesn’t it? :P

    July 31, 2012 at 6:03 pm

You know, I actually kinda believed John when he wrote that DougJ was the guy in the goat suit in the mountains of Utah.

Will I see anything like that if I show up at Triple Rock? Cause I’m definitely gonna make the five hour drive from Pasadena if so.

  37. 37.

    kindness

    July 31, 2012 at 6:24 pm

Furminators are the bomb aren’t they? Talk about the hair they remove….

So if we have a Friday meet-up where would be good? Going with the beer connection:

San Francisco – Toranado on Haight

    Oakland – The Trappist

In the Southbay how about Giovanni’s Pizza on Lawrence Expressway off 101 in San Jose? Yea it isn’t beer but they have the best thin crust NY pizza I can get out here (it could be Sunnyvale, I don’t know).

I guess we got no North Bay folk here…..

Ah, you lucky dogs! I used to live in Northern Cal, I’m an L.A. boy now :-)

But Berkeley is just a cool place to be, what was that killer hotdog place, on a street running n/s, even better than Pinks?

    Enjoy the socializing!

  39. 39.

    Bruce Webb

    July 31, 2012 at 7:57 pm

@Tony the Wonderhorse: hmm. Top Dog is the quintessential Berkeley Hot Dog place since at least the 70s but their locations these days are on Center between Oxford and Shattuck, on Durant just north of Telegraph while thie Northside Hearst Av location seems to have gone bye bye. And all those streets are E-W. so maybe you are thinking Oscars on Shattuck and Hearst. Not to put too fine a point one it a block north of Triple Rock.

And the only Dog place beyond Top Dog within three blocks of Berkeley BART that I can think of.

I haven’t had a dog at Oscars for decades but IIRC Oscars = steamed and Top Dog = grilled. And both at street food prices as opposed to Berkeley Foodie Restaurant prices. I love this city but you don’t have to blink before you are paying for $10 glasses of wine and $15 dollar tapas next door to a place with just as good or better food and drinks at half the price. Trust me you will never go hungry or thirsty in Downtown Berkeley even as the Cafe Lunch at Alice Water’s Chez Panisse would with wine set you back three figures. Nice if you got the bucks and the refined taste buds but not necessary.

Doug, I plan to drop by too. I missed your last visit due to (rather unusually) not checking the site the night before- kicked myself when I got home!

On another topic, the Top Dog site shows the Heart Avenue store still open. It’s not on the sign for the mini-mini mall that it’s in, so it’s easy to miss.
