I’m back and somewhat ready to start blogging again. But my brain is a bit fried from work, so I may not be too blog-active for a while.
Thanks to Libby and Elias for filling in for me (and feel free to write a farewell post before you go). And I’d also like to thank all you underground motherfuckers for keeping it real. I don’t read blog comments much when I’m busy, because they’re engrossing, and hard to tear myself away from. But I do need a fix of some kind, so I read a bit of the serious stuff in the Times and WaPo the past few weeks. It’s genuinely awful — not just wrong and self-absorbed, but boring, predictable, and badly written. So it’s good to be back.
What’s gone on the last few weeks that I should be aware of?

A mosque in Joplin, MO was destroyed by an arsonist today http://www.joplinglobe.com/topstories/x44827613/-Suspicious-fire-leads-to-destruction-of-Joplin-mosque?mobRedir=false Just another bad apple with no connection to RW hate speech I’m sure.

We used a rocket-powered skycrane to land an SUV on Mars. That was really cool.
JPL
Since you are back, I assume you are making a doctor’s appt.

Where is this stuff?
DougJ
@JPL:
Yes, I will.
Kathy
Glad to see you back Doug J. Loved both of your subs, I would be happy to see them back anytime!
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Kathy: me too
This may get some attention:
Romney’s a chiseling money-hoarder, I imagine even a few country-club-Cadillac types who delude themselves that they’re Romney’s financial peers will find this offensive. Keep giving’em hell, Harry.
And has anyone virtually, bloggily smacked the crap out of that sad old sack of wet brownies, Bob Schieffer, for comparing Harry Reid to Joe McCarthy?

Welcome back, Doug. Yopu going to adopt the Doug Jarvis Green-Ellis moniker for the upcoming season?
cmorenc
Why should Libby and Elias go at all? They definitely both add amply worthwhile substance to this joint.

Most interesting thing while you were gone, IMHO, is that a killer drought has wiped out most of the crop in USA heartland. Weatherfolk and climate scientists, led by James Hansen are finally dropping the “no specific weather event can be traced to global warming” line and finally saying that yes, this is climate change in action.
Folks are going to be really unhappy when food prices start going up this fall. I wonder how it will impact the election?

@cmorenc: This. As my roommate said about the guy she’s dating, “I like this one. I think I’ll keep him.”

Just to break up the Libby Spencer/Elias Esquith lovefest a bit, the masthead here is getting a bit crowded, and there are too many TL;DR posters here already.
Gin & Tonic
@cmorenc: 50% correct.

Do you know if the NYS wine grapes made it through the warm winter/freeze?
Edit I took a bath.

Not gonna put up a spoiler, but y’all better be watching women’s football.

@Maude:
Some got wrecked, I know, but a lot did fine. I don’t know the overall prognosis.

Here’s a little story from the Times today:
Just more criminal behavior by our under regulated banksters. Milton Friedman, were he alive today, would smile and serenely opine that big government was the problem.

@Judge Crater:
Is this what you’re looking for?
You didn’t have any text between the open tag and its closing.

Welcome back DougJ. Here’s my favorite version of Goin’ Down Slow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0MIQHymToA The Wolf is the man. Hubert really kicks it on this…

I listen to Bobby Bland when I need to be calm. I listen to Howlin’ Wolf when I want to be pissed. (I never need to be pissed, or want to be calm.)
Both work well.

G.H. Hardy proved the Riemann Hypothesis the night before flying to New York, but his solution perished with him when the plane went down.

One of the biggest developments that none of the obots here will talk about is Obama signing off on a draconian new law that effectively criminalizes non-violent peaceful political demonstrations and punishes them with 10 years in federal prison.
This destroys the first amendment’s “right to peaceably assemble” clause.
As you might imagine, the obots are eager to ignore these increasingly brutal extensions of Bush-era totalitarianism in their craven desire to praise the dusky Dubya clone in the Oval Office.
