I just heard some old women screaming in my living room. My mother and one of her friends have come over for a visit and they seem to have seen a scary person called Paul Ryan on the TV. They apparently do not care for him.

Judge Maxwell was in the same place as my Dad when WWII started and, like Dad, probably served through the entire war (not exactly missionary work in France). If he were still around, I’m pretty sure Dad also would have detested Romney. My recently deceased uncle (35 missions over Japan) certainly did. Romney is an insult to their memory.

Back in Utah next January, I hope. Or La Joya, or Winnepesaukee, or Belmont. As long as it’s not Washington.

Almost every Saturday afternoon, I tune in to a four-hour-long program on a west-suburban public radio station (WDCB, out of the College of DuPage, if you’re keeping score at home) that features recordings of old “golden-age” radio programs (1930s through early 50s). Especially since WWII falls smack in the middle of that period, and especially since a great deal of radio recording was done during the war years so that US radio programs could be rebroadcast to the troops abroad, this WDCB program often features old recordings of programs and their accompanying ads that were decidedly patriotic and pep-talky. And what’s striking about this material is how today’s Republicans/right-wingers would surely recoil in horror from it.
This cheesy patriotic stuff mentions such things as the multi-cultural nature of America — in positive terms. It extols the prowess of our great scientists, working tirelessly to ensure that the USA remains in the forefront of world technology. And the actual wartime recordings are rife with ads and placements for war bonds, victory gardens, and cheerful encouragements to “all you housewives out there” to return rendered fat to their butchers, be thrifty with their use of precious wartime resources, and buy such-and-such a product because it helps their rations go further. And always, above all, there’s the underlying message of all Americans working and sacrificing together to win the war. Can you imagine the reaction, especially from Republicans/right-wingers to messages — let alone government policies — like this?

C’mon ABL, you haven’t had an overtly race baiting column in days, what’s the problem? I think you’re starting to lose your touch, or did you decide it wasn’t worth all the smackdowns?

Amazing. You complain about all of ABL’s perceived “race baiting columns,” and then bitch because she isn’t producing alleged columns? Is this snark, or is this some low-level trolling?
That old man delights me. He delights me SO. Thank you, Ralph Maxwell. You are wise, dignified, and venomous.

That makes me proud to be from MN. 716 views when I saw it, someone in the comments was hoping for 1000’s of views, but I didn’t want to read too far down the comments. I wonder if they’ll have to close them once the teatards find the video?

By the way, Judge Maxwell didn’t always look quite this trim. He says he was a flabby couch potato at age 74, and decided to whip himself into shape. It seems to have worked. He now holds multiple world records in men’s 90+ track and field, including 80-meter hurdles, pole vault, and combined score in the decathlon. (If you have to ask, don’t try it. You’re certain to sprain something, at the very least.)

My dad was a WWII vet. He died a couple of weeks after the 2008 election, but he got to see Obama win. He also got to see the Phillies win. Both those wins made him very happy.

Thanks, I really needed that. Seems like every time I turn on the TV it is awash with the right’s ads spouting anti-Obama lies. Cruel lies, but they far outnumber the Obama ads, and it’s becoming depressing because as a normal American trying to make ends meet my voice is being swamped by those with more rights (i.e., money) than me.
