There’s still no way that Akin stays in it to the finish, or so it seems to me. But a friend writes “you go to war with the ignorant sexist ideologues you have, not the Burkean moderates you wish you had.”
Also too, open thread.

He’s going to paint his face red and be the Braveheart of the forced birth movement. “They may take our lives, but they’ll never take our ZYGOTES!!

So apparently Akin’s new website features a very prominent picture of a fetus. And when I call these folks the party of the Fetus Fetish, I certainly was not exaggerating.
No link, cuz, ewww.
Tonal Crow
It appears that Akin did not withdraw before the deadline, so his attempt to “honest[ly] rape” the American people is still on.

i love it. mittens called on him to step out, and just to show how much sway he has with the party, akin’s staying in. apparently ryan has called for it too.
republicans in disarray!

Someone on a previous thread said that Limpballs audience was calling saying that Akin should stay in and now KKKlanity’s audience is calling in saying Akin should stay in. Serves the idjits right. They’ve stroked the beast of partisan rank and file for so long that the rank and file aren’t even listening to them anymore. It’s like the Terminator movies, humans created Skynet and now Skynet has become self-aware and no longer even listens to the humans anymore.
HAHAHAHA.
I hear KKKlannity practically begging now for Akin to get out the race. Akin on KKKlannity saying he’s in it to stay. HAHAHAHA.
Its’ no laughing matter and I know this dude can still beat McCaskill, but damned if I am NOT enjoying the GOP’s disarray. And ya know later if Akin stays in, that the GOP will start giving money to him again, cause they can’t afford to lose a Senate seat. So they will once again be hypocrites!
Redneck Jesus
I’m from Missouri, and I honestly believe Akin not only stays in the race but wins it. Missouri is trending blood red and unless he gets pounded by dump trucks full of cash, I don’t see how McCaskill pulls this out.

Between this and a tropical storm apparently heading towards the west side of Florida early next week, it appears that God hates Republicans.

@Tonal Crow: Missouri is in Central Time. He’s still got about half an hour before his deadline.

The entire game was bound to end like this. This only worked when they used code words, because these things were decided by the public when we talked directly about these issues, by a more religious populace with even more archaic views about women. They can’t sell this now. They can only get people to act differently if they distort the issue into their frame.
Tonal Crow
@Violet: Ack! Thank you for correcting my obvious mistake.
Violet
@dmsilev: And the storm’s name is Isaac. How prophetic.

Here’s an interesting list of 11 reasons Akin didn’t/won’t quit by former Missouri State Senator Jeff Smith (2006-2009):

Violet
@Tonal Crow: No worries. People have been doing it all day. You’re in good company.

Depends on where Akin thinks he’s going to get his money. If he thinks Rove and the big money SuperPACs are bluffing (and I honestly think they are – they’re not going to turn down the Missouri Senate seat when its practically in their greasy little hands), then he’ll be in for the long haul.
But this is all happening so fast, its going to be hard to bring the pain on him. Were Akin to start losing consultants or aides because he couldn’t pay their bills, I could see an issue. Keep an eye on the campaign for another week or two and see if anyone drops him. If the money keeps coming, he’d be an idiot to pass an opportunity at the Senate.
Poopyman
@Southern Beale: That fetus doesn’t happen to have a red face, does it? ‘Cuz I read somewhere on the internets that Akin is going to “paint his face red and be the Braveheart of the forced birth movement.”
And if it’s on the internet it must be true.
Poopyman
@Zifnab: Good point. If he stays in, whoever bankrolls his campaign is going to own him.
Rove’s accountants are feverishly working out a cost/benefit analysis at this very moment.
Elizabelle
@Teddy’s Person:
Good link. Believable reasons, each of them.
Violet
@Poopyman: Ha! Well played! You know, I read it somewhere too.

This is a state where the most popular question is “where did you go to high school?” This is a state where Tony Larussa was never fully embraced by the Cardinal faithful because he wasn’t from around here. This is a state where Republican John Ashcroft lost to a dead man because people felt sorry for the family of the deceased.
It’s Missouri, DougJ. People vote based on their heart around here 100% of the time. And I don’t see GOP HQ being able to control the situation without boots on the ground.
To BJers in general:
I just want folks here looking at this from 1000 miles away to understand — Missouri’s governor, senior senator, secretary of state and attorney general are all Democrats. And yes, all of them are blue dogs except for Robin Carnahan. But this ain’t Oklahoma or Kansas by any stretch of the imagination. A GOPer with Akin’s profile would be winning easily in those states.
Berial
He was not found in bed with a dead girl or a live boy, and he is a Republican, therefore he will be fine.
askew
Akin’s a true believer and has resigned his House seat already. He has nothing to lose by staying in.
Pen
@Berial: Hell, nowadays neither of those would get him disqualified from the ballot by his party faithful as long as he was still running against a (D).
Linda Featheringill
Question for Rove & Co.:
If you buy Akin the Senate seat, will you be able to control him? Might he not be quite willing to bite the hand that feeds him?
Gretchen
He just announced that he’s staying in to carry the “pro-life banner”. That “outlaw all abortion” plank won’t be quiet this year, and Claire McCaskill will keep it on the front burner for Obama too. Go, Claire!
Bobby Thomson
I see someone slept through 2010.
bemused
@Teddy’s Person:
#10 reason: I’m puzzling how Akin’s Republican opponent managed to compare Akin to Obama but didn’t bother to look it up. Wacky but so Republican.
#11 reason : Senior GOP know they’re dealing with idiots. They should have known they were giving loaded weapons to children to play with. Now that’s idiocy.
Nancy Irving
Look, the Missouri GOP was not raped, they did it with Akin of their own free will.
So NO abortion for them, they must carry Akin’s candidacy to term!
Paul in KY
@Shawn in ShowMe: Like hearing that, since the other Missourians have been all gloomy-doomy.
