Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

He really is that stupid.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

I watched the speeches on the cspan livestream. The odd thing I noticed though, was the right wing commenters on the twitter stream below the video, half of which kept saying some version of the idea that based on their values, all these people would be Republicans. Every time somebody talked about their parents or whoever busting their asses for years and years to improve their lives, being honest and decent and all the other stuff you hear at these conventions, these guys all acted as if conservatives OWNED those values somehow. Seems as though thirty years of welfare queens and limosine liberals has created entire generations of folks who really truly believe that Democrats are all about letting people live high on the hog on a government check from cradle to grave. It’s not hyperbole to these folks. That some of them now serve Congress continues to scare me.

    So amazing. Sublime.

I just can’t imagine anyone ever delivering a speech that well. Reagan, for example, always seemed somewhat phony, even in his ‘greatest’ moments. He was practiced, but hollow. Michelle was poised, but warmly emotional. It probably helps that she wrote it. The more I think about it, the more brilliant it seems.

Was watching PBS, I was glad that I got to hear Mark Shields make the correct observation that MO took apart Romney’s and GOP’s whole Obama-Not-An-American theme without even mentioning them. That’s how great the speech was, it got me to semi-respect a member of our horrible media.

I think that what I will always remember about Ann Romney’s speech pattern is the term she has used more than once:

    ” You people..”

Its the “tell” on her character… its the reveal about her…

Not only does that statement cut like a knife to any brown person – no – actually ANY person hearing it — but it reveals her character — her profound ignorance. No truly classy person has that phrase in their easy access brain.Certainly no politician or wife of one. That it comes so quickly to her tongue says tons about how she sees the world and relates to it.

Damn, that was one hell of a speech. A fearsomely intelligent, loving, active, and eloquent woman–small wonder her husband gazes at her with that sweet, goofy smile every time. He adores her. Who wouldn’t?

    @Suffern Ace:

Good speeches relay deeply held thoughts and convictions. A good political speech also has to connect those thoughts and convictions in a real way to the experience of the audience. Words alone – talking points — do not make a good speech. Without a root in meaning — it is very difficult to connect. And the first connection a good speech makes is with its owner — the speechmaker. If that link isnt there, there can be no link to an audience..

The Republicans have taken their individuaslism and exceptionalism to its maximum expression and now have a hard time connecting the thoughts of individuals to meaning with their audience — except for anger and hate/resentment. Those feelings, however, don’t bring people together with positive energy like we saw tonight. Anger and resentment are meant to drive off and to isolate — to suppress and repress. Not to build…

The Republicans have revealed who they are — an old man insulting an empty chair now seems even sadder and more pathetic though honest…
