Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
I watched the speeches on the cspan livestream. The odd thing I noticed though, was the right wing commenters on the twitter stream below the video, half of which kept saying some version of the idea that based on their values, all these people would be Republicans. Every time somebody talked about their parents or whoever busting their asses for years and years to improve their lives, being honest and decent and all the other stuff you hear at these conventions, these guys all acted as if conservatives OWNED those values somehow. Seems as though thirty years of welfare queens and limosine liberals has created entire generations of folks who really truly believe that Democrats are all about letting people live high on the hog on a government check from cradle to grave. It’s not hyperbole to these folks. That some of them now serve Congress continues to scare me.

I just can’t imagine anyone ever delivering a speech that well. Reagan, for example, always seemed somewhat phony, even in his ‘greatest’ moments. He was practiced, but hollow. Michelle was poised, but warmly emotional. It probably helps that she wrote it. The more I think about it, the more brilliant it seems.
Was watching PBS, I was glad that I got to hear Mark Shields make the correct observation that MO took apart Romney’s and GOP’s whole Obama-Not-An-American theme without even mentioning them. That’s how great the speech was, it got me to semi-respect a member of our horrible media.
Then, I hurried to turn the TV off without having to hear that jelly-bellied cowardly bastard BoBo Brooks. Just made it in time.

No offense to all the Michelle love (I’m listening to the speech right now, and it’s very good), but I don’t want an Obama dynasty any more than a Clinton or Bush one. The Dems seem to have a much deeper bench. Let some others have a crack at it.

Don’t those folks understand when these eight years go by, it’s back to date night and watching their kids play volleyball in high school and college? Barack and Michelle are doing the White House thang ’cause we need them to, not because they’re political junkies.

@Ed in NJ:
I wonder about that…I think the Obama campaign isn’t worried about losing NY/NJ or winning Texas, so maybe they don’t mind that loss. If it was Steelers-Broncos, for example, that would be problematic. (I’m being facetious.

@Cacti: that’s because being poor is a punishment to be borne in silent shame. If the poors learn them some letters and numbers, get a suit and tie, and then they just let ever’body in and trash the place. AND IT’S NOT THEIR PLACE! I didn’t pay taxes just so some passel of trailer trash/hillbillies/blahs/messicans could someday be my BOSS! Oh, sorry…
Scott Alloway
@Violet: I agree. This is the best speech (for lack of a better word) I have ever seen in my 62 years. I teared at the end.

@DCLaw1:
In baseball slang, the DNC has a “murderers’ row” of prime time speakers lined up.
Sometimes you got it and sometimes you don’t, but in 2012, the DNC has an embarrassment of riches in speechifyin’ talent.

This is a typical day for loser C-Span callers. C-Span callers are less informed than a 13-year-old Justin Bieber/Twilight fan.

For President. Or Pope. Not picky.

Oh to get on topic: Best speech hands down until Barack himself takes the stage.
eric
@spiffy: never underestimate the Big Dog.
Elizabelle
@ChrisNYC:
heard her too.
Dimwit. She’s concerned about coal miners; I get that.
And then she talks about how she can’t afford healthcare with ObamaCare (really?) and she’s worked 42 years and is going to have to sell her house (because of healthcare problems).
And the Republicans are going to do anything for her?
She’s aggrieved that (per her) only JFK, Reagan and now Romney have come to West Virginia. (And we know how coal miners had to show up, without pay, for a Romney event.)
Low information; sad to dismiss her but WHO would spend precious time on a state full of commenters like THAT?
ChrisNYC
@gwangung: This is, indeed, the entire thing. Because being white and male and connected and able to spout the proper stuff is the ticket. So they get the stage and they just don’t have the talent to follow thru, because they don’t need it to win the stage. Still amazes me that Romney’s campaign thought that winning that wreck of a primary meant anything.

@eric:
Like Clinton, but Barack is the one everyone wants to see.
Would love it if Clinton killed it.

@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink: wow, the bond holders are kinda supposed to get wiped out first, I mean that high interest rate ain’t free, baby.
These assholes think they’re all Rmoneys and shouldn’t ever be exposed to any risks.
Elizabelle
@ChrisNYC:
She was not bright, but sounded more despairing than racist.
Maybe somebody can suggest that she write in Virgil Goode for West Virginia.
eric
@spiffy: I dont disagree, but the Big Dog has a certain “fuck it” about him that could make this very interesting.

@Cacti: Yes! Clinton and Obama are perfect examples of the “American Dream” come true, to the max. Poor nobodies who, by skill alone, climbed all the way to the top. An inspiration to everyone, everywhere, through all of time. And yet the Repukes – the so called “patriots” – nominate nothing but Princelings these days, weak willed scions of wealth. It would be richly amusing if not so literal.
ChrisNYC
@spiffy: Yes. My fondest C Span memory is a caller who insisted that paying for the gas for the eternal flame on JFK’s grave was responsible the entire debt problem. U S A! U S A!

@ChrisNYC:
Bwahahaha. And she probably votes! (now I weep)

@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink: here’s a MSNBC livestream that is pretty good. (It got through a 2 week trip in Paris this summer w/o a television.) Best of luck.

@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink: If history has taught us anything, there’s more room and energy for change when conditions are improving, not when they’re deteriorating. Er, positive change. You can always have some nationalist shit go crazy and have a Balkan War happen.

As Oliver Willis noted last week, the Romneys sold some of their stock portfolio to pay for college; Barack and Michelle Obama finally paid off their student loans in 2006. (And that was only because Barack’s books sold by the truckload after 2004.)

I think that what I will always remember about Ann Romney’s speech pattern is the term she has used more than once:
” You people..”
Its the “tell” on her character… its the reveal about her…
Not only does that statement cut like a knife to any brown person – no – actually ANY person hearing it — but it reveals her character — her profound ignorance. No truly classy person has that phrase in their easy access brain.Certainly no politician or wife of one. That it comes so quickly to her tongue says tons about how she sees the world and relates to it.

The joke Obama made at a Correspondent Dinner was that he warns potential suitors about predator drones.

@ChrisNYC: It doesnt help that they are so talking pointed in their speeches that their delivery comes off like Henny Youngman. Not bad, but more of a routine than a speech. I know they are looking for a sound byte and don’t know where it will come from. And because they can’t give speeches they constantly complain about the “lecture.”

I started out watching Michelle Obama’s speech with excitement and ended up wiping my eyes when she finished.
Damn, that was one hell of a speech. A fearsomely intelligent, loving, active, and eloquent woman–small wonder her husband gazes at her with that sweet, goofy smile every time. He adores her. Who wouldn’t?
I’m proud to have Michelle Obama as my First Lady.
And Erick Erickson can get fucked sideways with a rusty chainsaw.

@Suffern Ace:
Good speeches relay deeply held thoughts and convictions. A good political speech also has to connect those thoughts and convictions in a real way to the experience of the audience. Words alone – talking points — do not make a good speech. Without a root in meaning — it is very difficult to connect. And the first connection a good speech makes is with its owner — the speechmaker. If that link isnt there, there can be no link to an audience..
The Republicans have taken their individuaslism and exceptionalism to its maximum expression and now have a hard time connecting the thoughts of individuals to meaning with their audience — except for anger and hate/resentment. Those feelings, however, don’t bring people together with positive energy like we saw tonight. Anger and resentment are meant to drive off and to isolate — to suppress and repress. Not to build…
The Republicans have revealed who they are — an old man insulting an empty chair now seems even sadder and more pathetic though honest…
