ABL and Heather are at the arena (we only have two sets of creds) so I am going off the grid to have one of my patented solo adventures.
UPDATE by SG: President William Jefferson Clinton is up. And yes, give some more money at the act blue link.
I want a man to be President who had the good sense to marry Michelle Obama! Awesome line!
Update. DougJ here — give some money to the Kenyan usurper.

I hope you got ABL or Heather’s cell phone numbers so you have someone to call to bail you out or pick you up at the emergency room after you hurt yourself doing something like walking down the street.

Welcome, Mr. Cole.
Have you met Charles Pierce yet? You MUST!

So I was right … we will be getting late night updates from ABL while she’s on her way to bail your drunk ass out of jail! Does the FSM really love us that much?

Missing a sentence at the end. Should have read “and am planning on eating as much BBQ as I can stuff into my face.”
Come on Cole, do yourself a favor.

Everything was going so well at the convention until that drunk man somehow wandered onto the stage and had an argument with a cat sitting on a chair. Not wearing pants. Worse, the man wasn’t either.
Comrade Mary
But you are missing the VIBRANT and EXCITING governor of Delaware!

At first I thought After Hours.
Then I thought Hugh Grant going for an after hour drive.
But then I settled on Man vs. Food.

@BGinCHI: HA! That’s exactly what I thought, Cole was going on a Que Hunt! Especially since last night he mentioned they hadn’t sat down to eat dinner again!
Enjoy the BBQ John, and if you ever get a hankerin’ for the real thing, come to Memphis!
PsiFighter37
I have a feeling this will end badly or will end legendarily
With regards to the convention tonight – none of the speakers have come close to last night so far. Cleaver had the most life, and he was on really early. Really just waiting for the 10 PM hour at this point.

Kamala Harris – heard a lot of good things about her. Let’s see how good she is in the spotlight.
Mary
Memphis BBQ, really?? It went west from NC and only got worse. BBQ is NC.
And sorry to say, JC getting in trouble in Charlotte is, well, not really possible. Charlotte is sorta like the train station in the Harry Potter stories, not really there, unless you are going somewhere else.

Whelp, missed all the speakers until now. Bill Butcher needs a bit of practice.
Yay! Kamala Harris. I voted for her!
She needs a bit of practice too.

An 8:55 (EDT) tweet from ABL said they weren’t being let in. No further updates. Wonder what’s up with that? They’re credentialed – unless Heather is trying to get in on Cole’s pass and it has his picture.

The speakers so far have been good and are continuing the themes from last night. The overall message are the things that President Obama has done. This is was is needed and we need to remember what we hear so we can tell our friends and relatives.

WHY THE FRACK WERE ABL AND COLE TRYING TO GET IN 40 MINUTES AGO??????? THE CONVENTION STARTS AT 5 P.M. EASTERN TIME!! seriously, what the hell are they thinking they are doing out there????? they missed gabby douglas, emmanual clever, videos, nancy pelosi, the 12 (9) democratic female senators… the list goes on and on.
The ones they should want to see are the ones on before 8, the speakers for the democrat volunteers! The primetime speakers are tempered for primetime coverage!
what the hell else are those two idiots doing all day long in charlotte anyhoo??? SERIOUSLY

@Poopyman: WaPo said arena is at 24,000 capacity and no one is being let in or back in, with a huge crowd gathered outside.

@Anya: what a happy coincidence!

I love this Christina speech in Spanglish. Every time she breaks into Spanish, there must be wingnut heads exploding all over the country. I’ll bet Rush practically has a stroke on his show tomorrow at the very idea of hearing Spanish in prime time.
PsiFighter37
@mark: You are on a roll tonight.
Harris was pretty standard. Nothing tonight has prompted me to light my hair on fire like Deval did last night. It may also be because I’m much more sober tonight.

It always amuse how Republicans always want to be on the wrong side of history. I don’t know why they desire to be wrong all the time, but I just let them.

That auto industry video was excellent.
Linda Featheringill
I pulled up Sister Simone’s speech on CSPAN and watched it. Very moving. But what really touched me was the enthusiastic response of the crowd there to a rather simple message of we are our brother’s and our sister’s keepers.
Randy P
@Some Loser: Yeah, tonight are not the fire-breathers. Not so far. Lots of ordinary people though, with interesting stories. Including Sandra Fluke and some people whose lives were burned by Bain. And the aforementioned Christina (see #56), who’s a big star on Univision.
Some Loser

So I followed a wingnut youtube linky down the rabbit hole. Learned something interesting on the voyage. Apparently to some of the truly deranged, if you flip the official R-Money logo over, it gives you the sign of the beast. Seems the tripartite colors of the R are really upsetting to some of the more unbalanced. Who knew?
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
@Violet: He’s the third Bob. Bob Slidell and Bob Porter went to the Dark Side. Bob King became a Union Jedi.

Anyone listening to David Brooks? What a maroon. He is complaining that no one is talking about proposing new legislation during day 1 or 2 of the DNC. David Brooks looks so upset. He can’t believe that he has to speak to anyone other than the Davos set. He keeps asking the same damn question. “Where is the policy?”
It’s a cheerleading event, you twit. It’s the political equivalent of comic-con. None of the talking heads bother to ponder whether there is so little talk about future plans, because no one knows what the hell the GOP might use as a hostage next. FFS!

Common usage, I know, but still grates painfully on the ears every time whenever someone uses ‘podium’ as a synonym of ‘lectern’ as Ms. Fluke just did.
A podium is the raised platform one stands on; a lectern is the high slant-topped desk one stands behind (or at).

I really like her. YMMV, I guess.
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
@Smiling Mortician: Put Warren’s content in Deval Patrick’s delivery last night and the torches and pitchforks would be out.

and a Bible quote, to boot!
Not the most inspiring figure, but a great speech nonetheless IMO.
Baud
@El Cid:
My feeling also. This is probably the biggest stage she’s ever been on, however.

I don’t know what some of you meh-ers are seeing, but I think her speech is very good so far.
Enthused, focused, passionante, and REAL.
Can’t wait for the Big Dog.
L. Ron Obama
This is a bit better now that she’s talking about Obama. This sounds like two different speeches, written by two different people, grafted together. Wait, now there’s a third speechwriter. This last one is much better.
Judas Escargot, Acerbic Prophet of the Mighty Potato God
@Smiling Mortician:
Agreed. She’s not FLOTUS but she’s doing pretty well IMO.
Ben D.
President Clinton better rip the fucking bark off of R/R tonight. Maybe its the booze talking but I want to see some metaphorical blood tonight, I’m so sick of the blatant lies coming from Team Douchebag. Make ’em pay, Bubba.
PurpleGirl
I think Warren is connecting with the audience.
Elizabelle
good finish
El Cid
@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink: Put Warren’s talk in Michelle’s delivery and people wander out in the street ready to do whatever’s needed.
Dave
@Smiling Mortician: I hear you. I for one don’t buy the snappiness from her. She needed to lecture harder and not do the standard angel of the household/mommy shtick women politicians always go for. She should have rocked some faces with stats and specifics about how they’re screwing you.
Smiling Mortician
@El Cid: I agree. I can’t quite figure out what all the discontent is about. Maybe it’s about her vocal quality? And the fact that she’s sort of nervous, I think. But she’s saying some really good stuff. Her riff on what people are – and what corporations are not – was awesome.
MikeJ
The first bit dragged a bit, but Warren picked up. Happy to see Clinton now though.

Here’s Fluke’s speech- Video- DNC Convention 2012: Sandra Fluke Torches RW War On Women
L. Ron Obama
I think they should have cut the first half of the Warren speech. The second half flowed much better, the delegates were more engaged, and she was more dynamic.

Big Dawg coming up
scav
@Smiling Mortician: Might explain some of the results in MA though. People either get her or they don’t. I’ve tended to find her persuasive.
ChrisNYC
I like her too. I’m not sure she’ll win but the part about the ripoffs is important and is nowhere else in any of our pol discourse. If we could banish this idea that credit card companies and the rest are “partners” when what they are are adversaries who are out to get that marginal dollar via whatever means, things would be much much better.
Mary G
Big Dog is here!
Violet
@PurpleGirl: Don’t know if she’s connecting with the TV audience, though.
Big Dog!
TaMara (BHF)
I think we need a Big Dog thread!
El Cid
@Baud: There’s an earnestness and an obvious depth of knowledge which I think goes farther for Warren than fireworks.
Elizabelle
@Paddy:
Thanks Paddy. Missed Emmanuel Cleaver, so will check that out later.
You have a great blog.

Sandra Fluke gave a really impressive speech. Then, startlingly, for me was fellow Pittsburgher (who knew?) the founder of Costco. Never shopped there; there’s none around here in any event. But, wow, who would have thought there’d be a mainstream CEO going for Pres. Obama.
First time I’ve ever heard Eliabeth Warren give a speech. She truly sounds like she comes from OK except really different politics. I like her stand up, fresh populism – not demagoguery – but a real debater.
Is pickup-truck Brown going to actually debate her? Probably not I would guess.
And now Big Dog….
Comrade Mary
I keep forgetting how slim he’s gotten since going vegan.

Here comes the Big Dawg………..oh, please deliver.

BUBBA!!
El Cid
@Paddy: Fluke kicked all kinds of ass. It was really impressive.

Oh boy, the new GOP and Beltway BS Golden Boy! This will be interesting. What will he say? I do hope he calms that rash Obama down.
Violet
Ohhhh…Bill playing Kingmaker. Go Big Dog!
Smiling Mortician
@Dave: Yes, she’s at her best when she lets her wonk flag fly.

Here comes the Big Dawg………..oh, please deliver.
Anne Laurie
Just put up a new thread, for the Big Dawg.
rikyrah
loved Warren. she spoke the truth, and of course, because she’s for the little guy, Sully got all pissy. had a fucking month of thousands of people protesting in Wisconsin and he couldn’t be bothered to cover it
PsiFighter37
Smoooooth line, Bill.
Mary G
New thread is up.

@Schlemizel:
I haven’t read sully in years and then only a couple of times. It was enough. He’s got contacts to have that job. He is boring.
WaterGirl
@mark: Sandra Fluke was on. Didn’t see Barney Frank, though.
This is a great page for seeing who is scheduled in what order – just make sure to refresh the page fairly often because they are juggling folks around like crazy.
http://www.c-span.org/DNC/Schedule/
I imagine we will see Barney Frank tomorrow. Jim Clyburn was scheduled for Tuesday, was then moved to Wednesday, and now has been moved to Thursday.
karen marie
Where do they get these callers to C-Span? I continued letting the livestream run after everything was over, and every single caller, bar none, has been a complete wet blanket. “Obama promised he’d fix everything immediately, he didn’t get it done in the first two years [WTF?] so I’m not voting for him,” “Obama promised he’d bring change and that if he didn’t he wouldn’t run again, he didn’t bring it and he’s running again, I’m so disappointed.” Enough to make one pick up a fork and get stabby.
P.S. I’m an east coast transplant to the west coast and I’m still not used to being three hours earlier, so I missed all the speakers before Clinton but, wowser, I’m glad I didn’t miss him. He had me at hello.
