    Really looking forward to Zach Walls’ speech. He gave one of the absolute most impassioned speeches I’ve ever seen on marriage equality in Iowa and I’m sure he’s going to knock it out of the park again tonight.

    Did Cole show up? I hope he hasn’t let his predilection for dames and whiskey subvert his enjoyment and experience of, you know, the actual convention.

    So, now that we’ve established that Barack Obama can control the weather (besides ordering up a thunderstorm for tonight, apparently he also arranged last week’s hurricane and the drought), how long until he smites Mitt Romney with a bolt of lightning?

    I’ll guess it’ll happen at the climax of the third debate.

    We close the deal tonight. And I am really enjoying all these little short segue videos highlighting what dems have done and are for. On basic kitchen table stuff with ordinary folks delivering the message. It has a simple style, that kind of reminds me of the hokey commercials in the 50’s and 60’s for all sorts of useful products being created.

    This is a well designed convention, that is both carefully scripted, but unpretentious, and filled with the spirit of service for both big and little things, that politicians have drifted away from in recent decades. If it doesn’t move the needle, then the needle can’t be moved, imho.

    Listening to NPR today when Michael Scherer commented that so far none of the speeches he heard were aimed at swing voters. I’m not sure why swing voters don’t care about medicare or medicaid, so it’s confusing as to what issues Obama should talk about specifically for that group.

    Also, I heard a Kathy Hochul commercial yesterday in which she drew a specific distinction between herself and Obama, saying she voted for the balanced budget amendment and he did not, and how Washington was paralyzed by a lack of bi-partisanship. I realize she’s playing to her audience, but damn Kathy.

    @Hal:

    Listening to NPR today when Michael Scherer commented that so far none of the speeches he heard were aimed at swing voters.

    Nor tyre-swing voters, apparently. Swing voters will make up their minds — as someone commented today — on things like federal jobs requesting five years of tax returns and Mittens releasing one and a half. There’s not much of a queue for the swing this year.

    This is about galvanising the issues for the party faithful, getting people fired up to do the formal and informal job of grassroots campaigning over the next two months, and for pushing on registration and turnout, especially in a climate of state-level vote suppression.

    I think it’s largely because the republicans have gotten so extreme and ever more pure right wing crazy, that the dem powers that be saw the opening, and took their chances coming out straight up what they believe.

    For decades, we have been in an insincere dance with the goopers, anchored in the fuzzy middle, to move back and forth from that middle, whenever somebody thought we should. Not now.
