Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

“But what about the lurkers?”

This really is a full service blog.

Let there be snark.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

I did not have telepathic declassification on my 2022 bingo card.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

The next time the wall wtreet journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Stolen from Paddy at the Political Carnival, who has the whole speech up, but I’mma make you click over to watch the rest, as is only fair.

Can somebody on the Twitter ask the Angry Black Lady to check on John Cole, make sure that if he’s passed out from celebratory exuberance, he’s not gonna choke on his own tongue?

That was a VERY effective speech, very policy-laden and very convincing. If there are any persuadables out there, this speech just might move some numbers. The Big Dawg was clearly on his game tonight and he rebutted all of the Romney-Ryan lies with wit and precision. I am very impressed! Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow is still playing in my head.

TPM’s got a story up about Mitt’s tax returns. The Secret Service is looking into somebody who may have stolen Mitt’s precious tax returns and was trying to extort/sell them for some virtual $$$. I am figuring these returns are out there somewhere now. He might as well release them now.

I spent some time on the twitter machine tonight. I did not know Chuck Woolery was a right wing douchebag. Is this some characteristic of every game show talk show host? I know Bob Barker, Alex Trebek, Drew Carey and Wink Martindale( I think he’s dead) are all supposed to be right wingers.

Also too I went to the Human Turtle Jack Welch’s twitter feed. Mr.Lets Turn GE Into a Mortgage Lender had the following tweet about Elizabeth Warren’s speech:

    Jack Welch ‏@jack_welch
Ms Warren ..Corporations ARE people..you’ve just never worked outside academia..sad commentary

Then apparently either the Big Dawg caused him to soil his Depends and he had to change them or it was past his bedtime because he had zero to say about Clinton’s speech. .

Reposted from last thread: in addition to everything else in the speech, I just loved the fact that it was all coming from the mouth of a Southern country boy who was born on the wrong side of the tracks, pulled himself up by his bootstraps and got to the top of the food chain through his own hard work and talent. All the cliches Republicans think they own, yet haven’t actually been able to produce in eons.

When he did his “maybe I was at a disadvantage, being a poor boy from Arkansas who still thought two and two were four!” thing, I cheered.

The new Woodward book has leaked. The last paragraph of the story is odd:

Congress reached a short-term deal to slice spending and extend the nation’s debt ceiling through the election. But it also set up a mechanism that will lead to a “fiscal cliff” of tax hikes and deep cuts to programs, including defense spending, at the end of this year, absent new congressional action. “It is a world of the status quo, only worse,” Woodward concludes.

What? The “fiscal cliff” isn’t the status quo at all. I swear Villagers don’t even know how to listen to the words that come out of their mouths.

I think the polls are going to be showing a sharp closure in that “enthusiasm gap” the talking heads keep chattering about.

Like I said, at this point, I won’t be satisfied with a mere win. I want R/R humiliated. I want weeping and wailing among the teabaggers as Boehner hands the gavel back to Nancy Pelosi. I want shell-shocked Republicans on teevee who just can’t understand how That One could possibly beat them again.

    Let’s make it so.

Sure, but it’s all about the duration. If it’s from tonight’s speech, you’re fine.

I’m not a Clinton fan in particular, but that was the best policy-based political speech I’ve ever heard. Bar none. It wasn’t rhetorical in it’s essence – although it used some great rhetorical flourishes – it was concrete and expository – and entertaining as hell, even running at 45+ minutes. If I listened to that speech alone, among the offerings of the Dems this round, I’d be fixin’ to vote for this guy Barack Obama.

Watching a replay of some speeches on CNN and they went to Wolf Blitzer and co. Someone made a point about how in his speech Clinton highlighted facts in his favor while ignoring opposing data. It really brought home two things

    1) It really highlighted the difference between the two conventions. I expect that politicians will cherry pick the data to support their positions. That is normal politicking. But the RNC was a series of outright fabrications.

    2) CNN is all too happy to treat those two things as indistinguishable.

    @MattR:

CNN has to make the two things indistinguishable. Their whole brand is to let people argue a bit, provide no context, and delicately balance the blame equally on both sides. It was sure as the sun as soon as the bullshit from the Ryan speech achieved a stench so putrid that even WOLF FUCKING BLITZER had to make a note of it that they’d look under every possible fucking rock for evidence that the Democrats said something that isn’t the 100% pure distilled truth, and then triumphantly claim that….BOTH.SIDES.DO.IT.

They can’t live without it. It’s their life essence. David Gergen needs that shit to live.

And of course, when someone on CNN says “opposing facts,” there’s a distinct chance it’s a GOP sockpuppet referring to their made-up bullshit, not actual verifiable facts.

Anyway, fucking awesome speech, and if Obama has sense, which I think he does, he’s gonna send the Big Dog into Ohio and Virginia and let him loose, tearing the skin off Romney and Ryan’s bullshit candidacy, one layer at a time, town by town. Bill was having a blast. He clearly wants into the game. He always enjoyed the sporting aspect of politics – far more than Barack does. Let the man play!

Maybe that speech alone didn’t move the needle on working class whites. But that speech and two months of energetic Big Dog stump speeches – which will get media attention because of who it is – very well may. And that could turn a couple swing states into “safe Obama” states. And the rout will be on.

I’m gonna say the Romney tax return blackmail situation is legit- I ought to go to 4chan and see if anybody’s taking credit, smells like Anonymous ;)

And I’m going to say the payload (barring further issues I know nothing about) is this: Romney took amnesty in 2009, which makes him an ADMITTED FELON who has been let go in exchange for an admission of his felony crime.

Since he’s rich, they let him go, unlike most felons.

Hell, they got Al Capone for tax evasion. Romney is guilty, guilty, guilty and it’s this he’s been hiding.

And there is NO FUCKING CHANCE that it’s a Rove scheme to HELP Romney. You don’t cook up a scheme like that to help a guy get elected to the Presidency. Advertising that your guy can be blackmailed and requires the protection of the sitting President’s Secret Service to avoid disgrace?

I can’t think of a thing that could’ve happened that’s more likely to result in the Romney tax thing becoming a bigger stink. So not only can he be blackmailed, but people are out there actually doing it, right now? Holy crap!

It was like a time warp hearing President Clinton talking in the aw shucks country way that he puts on when he’s really cooking in the kitchen.

There are a thousand ways you can nail a liar, and Bill is able to select the most memorable one, and stretch it out for a few extra moments of waiting for the punchline before you realize you just heard it, and it was great.

Of course you do have to grant that his targets were fat slow moving sitting ducks when you inspect them closely. The targets have no facts to work with and are scurrying from one head-fake to another trying to get people to forget that their Republican party has done the same dramatically terrible stuff over and over ever since Ike left office.

None of their stupid ideas this time around are new and different, it’s the same old Laffer Curve / trickle down / papa knows best, you kids just go play and let the grownups play with the money bomb again stuff that Nixon, Reagan, Bush and Bush did in the 70s, 80s 90s and 00s. Did I leave anyone out?

What a buncha morans! It sometimes makes us wonder if Democracy is the best form of government when you see the dunderheads that we have put in charge of the money bomb AND the H-Bomb!

I can’t recall when the Big Dawg monicker became attached to Clinton either, but a better question might be why it stuck – you saw why last night.

That dude has always relished the fight, and he loves that role of “oh shit, here comes her big brother, and he is pissed” He’s the anti-bully. I remember the video introducing Bill Clinton at the 92 convention, and one passage from that video still has a strong pull to me. His momma was talking about getting abused by her husband, and Bill stepped in and told him he was about to get a beat-down. That one resonated with me, and that was the reason Bill got my first ever vote for POTUS. That’s the big dog aspect of it right there – you mess with them, you done messed with me. I think that’s why southerners, while they might want to hate him, can’t do it; he understands and he lives that tribal stuff, and he was the alpha male in that tribe.
