Stolen from Paddy at the Political Carnival, who has the whole speech up, but I’mma make you click over to watch the rest, as is only fair.
Can somebody on the Twitter ask the Angry Black Lady to check on John Cole, make sure that if he’s passed out from celebratory exuberance, he’s not gonna choke on his own tongue?
BerkeleyMom
Great speech. Expertly delivered. Good to have you back Big Dog.
LanceThruster
Frist?
patroclus
That was a VERY effective speech, very policy-laden and very convincing. If there are any persuadables out there, this speech just might move some numbers. The Big Dawg was clearly on his game tonight and he rebutted all of the Romney-Ryan lies with wit and precision. I am very impressed! Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow is still playing in my head.

TPM’s got a story up about Mitt’s tax returns. The Secret Service is looking into somebody who may have stolen Mitt’s precious tax returns and was trying to extort/sell them for some virtual $$$. I am figuring these returns are out there somewhere now. He might as well release them now.
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/09/romney_tax_return_blackmail.php
Yeah, I do believe Mitt and Ann have started drinking heavily. Probably Tagg, Biff, Wally and the other kids too.
Wag
@LanceThruster:
Frist? How 2007 FDL of you.
Violet
I’m still so pumped up about Big Dog’s speech, I can’t sleep. He was just amazing. Love him so much.
I’m a bit worried about John Cole too. He’s gone very silent.
Wag
@Wag:
and you were second.
Hill Dweller
I saw that d-bag Terry McAuliffe on MSNBC after his speech, and he said Clinton had been working on it for about a month.
Wag
@BerkeleyMom: This…
@patroclus: …and this…
@Violet: …and this.
MikeJ
@mai naem:
If somebody really did steal them (and it sound more like a Rove operation than anything) it was the dumbest thing possible to do. Why on earth would you want to make Romney look sympathetic?
FormerSwingVoter
Is it normal to have an erection after Bill Clinton gives a speech? I mean, hypothetically.
mai naem
I spent some time on the twitter machine tonight. I did not know Chuck Woolery was a right wing douchebag. Is this some characteristic of every game show talk show host? I know Bob Barker, Alex Trebek, Drew Carey and Wink Martindale( I think he’s dead) are all supposed to be right wingers.
Also too I went to the Human Turtle Jack Welch’s twitter feed. Mr.Lets Turn GE Into a Mortgage Lender had the following tweet about Elizabeth Warren’s speech:
Then apparently either the Big Dawg caused him to soil his Depends and he had to change them or it was past his bedtime because he had zero to say about Clinton’s speech. .
MattR
@FormerSwingVoter: How about if you got one even though you weren’t watching the speech?
Chris
Reposted from last thread: in addition to everything else in the speech, I just loved the fact that it was all coming from the mouth of a Southern country boy who was born on the wrong side of the tracks, pulled himself up by his bootstraps and got to the top of the food chain through his own hard work and talent. All the cliches Republicans think they own, yet haven’t actually been able to produce in eons.
When he did his “maybe I was at a disadvantage, being a poor boy from Arkansas who still thought two and two were four!” thing, I cheered.

The new Woodward book has leaked. The last paragraph of the story is odd:
What? The “fiscal cliff” isn’t the status quo at all. I swear Villagers don’t even know how to listen to the words that come out of their mouths.
Mnemosyne
I think the polls are going to be showing a sharp closure in that “enthusiasm gap” the talking heads keep chattering about.
Like I said, at this point, I won’t be satisfied with a mere win. I want R/R humiliated. I want weeping and wailing among the teabaggers as Boehner hands the gavel back to Nancy Pelosi. I want shell-shocked Republicans on teevee who just can’t understand how That One could possibly beat them again.
Let’s make it so.
tBone
@FormerSwingVoter:
Sure, but it’s all about the duration. If it’s from tonight’s speech, you’re fine.
If you still have one from his 1992 DNC acceptance speech, you might want to consult your physician.
mai naem
@MikeJ: If you read the story, whoever did it did it for $$$. If it’s a Rove scheme he just brought it back in the news. Otherwise, it’s just a financial transaction. My non-educated guess is that one of those flash drives has gone to somebody who hasn’t returned it, who will manage to open it up hiring some computer geek.
Bruce S
I’m not a Clinton fan in particular, but that was the best policy-based political speech I’ve ever heard. Bar none. It wasn’t rhetorical in it’s essence – although it used some great rhetorical flourishes – it was concrete and expository – and entertaining as hell, even running at 45+ minutes. If I listened to that speech alone, among the offerings of the Dems this round, I’d be fixin’ to vote for this guy Barack Obama.
MattR
Watching a replay of some speeches on CNN and they went to Wolf Blitzer and co. Someone made a point about how in his speech Clinton highlighted facts in his favor while ignoring opposing data. It really brought home two things
1) It really highlighted the difference between the two conventions. I expect that politicians will cherry pick the data to support their positions. That is normal politicking. But the RNC was a series of outright fabrications.
2) CNN is all too happy to treat those two things as indistinguishable.

PETA fan Bob Barker?
Violet
@Mnemosyne: Me too. I want all 50 states, and yes that means Texas. I want the Senate back with the biggest possible majority. I want the House. I want NANCY SMASH back with that giant gavel in her hands. I want them shell-shocked and slack-jawed and left with nothing. Total destruction.

TPM’s got a story up about Mitt’s tax returns.
Even if this is bullshit it’s a good idea just to keep the issue in people’s faces. And if something does actually get released, then you get this:
Mitt: Those aren’t my real tax returns.
Everybody else: Okay, prove it!
Suffern Ace
@mai naem: That’s odd. I thought he founded msnbc or cnbc just for the purpose of hounding bill Clinton.
Geoduck
@MikeJ:
Dunno about PETA, but animal rights is definitely Barker’s big issue, rather than generic right-wing stuff.

This was my first time seeing Bill Clinton speak. I was blown away. That was one hell of a speech.
freelancer
@Bruce S:
This is exactly my sentiment. I grew up as a low-info voter adolescent in the 90s, and didn’t really like Clinton. But this speech fucking nailed the bullshit to the wall. It was catharsis in primetime for 20 years of a slow boil of wingnut hate and fantasy, torn asunder in 48 minutes.
Fucking Amazeballz.
The prophet Nostradumbass
@Geoduck: He’s definitely a PETA supporter. He’s also given to the anti-whaling Sea Shepherd group.
rb
@mai naem: I smell a Rove. This is an attempt to kill the tax story. Now mitt will say ‘we don’t negotiate with hostage takers or whatever, and the press will go along. Shockingly, the ‘hackers’ will supposedly lose their nerve and not leak. Tax story: killed.
Hill Dweller
Howard Fineman was saying that some of President Obama’s top advisers that also served in Clinton’s admin helped a lot with the speech writing.
jgaugust
As a 25-year old who voted for the first time in 2008 for President Obama, but grew up a diehard democrat during the Clinton years, it was phenomenal to hear the Big Dawg up on stage again and absolutely crush everything the GOP has said in the past 4 years.
Tonight is a giant fucking win. The Big Dawg Abides…and so do we!
The prophet Nostradumbass
@Hill Dweller: I heard him take about five attempts at saying that, and hit the mute button.
MikeJ
@rb:
Or it will be leaked and be written in crayon and be obviously phoney with accounts named “big Cayman tax cheat fund” etc.
Another Halocene Human
Okay, so I missed the earlier speakers but caught the last hour. Who was the best speaker of the night–besides Blarney Stone Bill?
MikeJ
@Another Halocene Human: Cleaver.
The prophet Nostradumbass
@Another Halocene Human: I saw Sandra Fluke, the dude from Costco, Elizabeth Warren, and Clinton. After Clinton, hmm, I’ll just say it’s not the Costco guy.
Cmm
When and how did everyone start calling Clinton “Big Dawg”?
? Martin
@Cmm: Hmm. I think that was a nickname for him within his staff, but I don’t think it really caught on with Dems until he left office. At least that’s my sense of it.
zzcool
Australia has a very similar Student Loan Program.
You actually need to earn over about $40K AUD before you even need to consider paying back the loan. On top of that the loan gathers 0% interest.
I’m sure you’ll get there soon enough America.
MikeJ
@? Martin: My research, all 90 seconds of it, finds something horrible. Can’t find a pre-2000 ref to him with that name. The first thing I find for sure? Maureen Dowd.

So they got people Bill knows, and who also know the Obama administrations achievements, to work with him on the speech?
Sounds like a smart strategy. One certainly can’t argue with the results.

@MattR:
CNN has to make the two things indistinguishable. Their whole brand is to let people argue a bit, provide no context, and delicately balance the blame equally on both sides. It was sure as the sun as soon as the bullshit from the Ryan speech achieved a stench so putrid that even WOLF FUCKING BLITZER had to make a note of it that they’d look under every possible fucking rock for evidence that the Democrats said something that isn’t the 100% pure distilled truth, and then triumphantly claim that….BOTH.SIDES.DO.IT.
They can’t live without it. It’s their life essence. David Gergen needs that shit to live.
And of course, when someone on CNN says “opposing facts,” there’s a distinct chance it’s a GOP sockpuppet referring to their made-up bullshit, not actual verifiable facts.
Anyway, fucking awesome speech, and if Obama has sense, which I think he does, he’s gonna send the Big Dog into Ohio and Virginia and let him loose, tearing the skin off Romney and Ryan’s bullshit candidacy, one layer at a time, town by town. Bill was having a blast. He clearly wants into the game. He always enjoyed the sporting aspect of politics – far more than Barack does. Let the man play!
Maybe that speech alone didn’t move the needle on working class whites. But that speech and two months of energetic Big Dog stump speeches – which will get media attention because of who it is – very well may. And that could turn a couple swing states into “safe Obama” states. And the rout will be on.
Applejinx
I’m gonna say the Romney tax return blackmail situation is legit- I ought to go to 4chan and see if anybody’s taking credit, smells like Anonymous ;)
And I’m going to say the payload (barring further issues I know nothing about) is this: Romney took amnesty in 2009, which makes him an ADMITTED FELON who has been let go in exchange for an admission of his felony crime.
Since he’s rich, they let him go, unlike most felons.
Hell, they got Al Capone for tax evasion. Romney is guilty, guilty, guilty and it’s this he’s been hiding.
And there is NO FUCKING CHANCE that it’s a Rove scheme to HELP Romney. You don’t cook up a scheme like that to help a guy get elected to the Presidency. Advertising that your guy can be blackmailed and requires the protection of the sitting President’s Secret Service to avoid disgrace?
I can’t think of a thing that could’ve happened that’s more likely to result in the Romney tax thing becoming a bigger stink. So not only can he be blackmailed, but people are out there actually doing it, right now? Holy crap!
Applejinx
I loved this: “You gotta give one thing- it takes some brass, to attack a guy for doin’ what you did!”
Damn, is Clinton good at this. I’m awful glad he’s on our side!

It was like a time warp hearing President Clinton talking in the aw shucks country way that he puts on when he’s really cooking in the kitchen.
There are a thousand ways you can nail a liar, and Bill is able to select the most memorable one, and stretch it out for a few extra moments of waiting for the punchline before you realize you just heard it, and it was great.
Of course you do have to grant that his targets were fat slow moving sitting ducks when you inspect them closely. The targets have no facts to work with and are scurrying from one head-fake to another trying to get people to forget that their Republican party has done the same dramatically terrible stuff over and over ever since Ike left office.
None of their stupid ideas this time around are new and different, it’s the same old Laffer Curve / trickle down / papa knows best, you kids just go play and let the grownups play with the money bomb again stuff that Nixon, Reagan, Bush and Bush did in the 70s, 80s 90s and 00s. Did I leave anyone out?
What a buncha morans! It sometimes makes us wonder if Democracy is the best form of government when you see the dunderheads that we have put in charge of the money bomb AND the H-Bomb!

@MikeJ: I have no way of checking but in my mind the first place I saw that was bartcop.com (back in the days it was “Rush Limbaugh lying nazi whore”) and I though it was around the time of his re-election. I could very easily be wrong about that, maybe it was later but Bart used to (still does) go off after Dem officials who toe the GOP line when talking about Dem Presidents or proposals & what I remember it was during one of those rants that I first heard him refer to “the big dog”

Watched Morning Joe for about 20 minutes this morning for the first time.
Joe’s basically a right-wing hack, whose response to Clinton’s speech is Clinton is still critical of Obama’s handling of things and still questions, if Obama is the right man to handle the economy and some other stuff that basically glossed over how effective Clinton’s speech was.
I mean President Clinton summarized how to balance the budget down to one word, “Arithmetic”! That’s fucking genius!

I can’t recall when the Big Dawg monicker became attached to Clinton either, but a better question might be why it stuck – you saw why last night.
That dude has always relished the fight, and he loves that role of “oh shit, here comes her big brother, and he is pissed” He’s the anti-bully. I remember the video introducing Bill Clinton at the 92 convention, and one passage from that video still has a strong pull to me. His momma was talking about getting abused by her husband, and Bill stepped in and told him he was about to get a beat-down. That one resonated with me, and that was the reason Bill got my first ever vote for POTUS. That’s the big dog aspect of it right there – you mess with them, you done messed with me. I think that’s why southerners, while they might want to hate him, can’t do it; he understands and he lives that tribal stuff, and he was the alpha male in that tribe.
