@Emma: Sounds exciting! My one bit of advice would be to remember that the tropics are characterized by lush, year-round growth, whereas the English garden is designed to go mostly dormant for a chunk of time every year. You may find yourself frustrated that you can’t contain and train your tropical plants in the same way you could an English cottage garden. Of course it depends how wild a cottage garden you are imagining. But just something to keep in mind.
I live in an environment that is not quite tropical but is far enough south that we can grow some tropicals. My English relatives are always stunned by what our gardens can do in February and don’t understand things like, tree stumps that rot out in a year or two after the tree dies, versus old stumps in the UK that are there for decades. Things just act differently in the tropics. So keep lush growth in mind when you are stacking plants, etc.
What does it matter to them if civilians get the same early voting rights that they get?
At least now it’s easy to tell which military groups are just front groups for the GOP.
I want to know what legal basis they’re claiming for their appeal. I mean, “we want more voting rights than our fellow citizens and want to depress African-American turnout” isn’t a real sound legal argument.

Got my first full day of FF class tomorrow. I’ve had one class aleady but it was introduction and lecture. But, there are no textbooks in town, at all. College bookstore is out, used bookstore’s are out, etc. So, on a whim, I called the Fire Dept. here on the base and accidently got the Chief who happenns to have the book and told me to come by after work and he’s square me away. I don’t know if I’m renting, buying, or borrowing, but dammit, I can study for my test.

The big story after the elections may be the tech wars. You recently had google come out with a competitive 7 inch tablet. And now, Amazon has dropped a bomb with a slew of new Kindles (Amazon’s New Kindle Avalanche: Everything You Need to Know).
Next up will be the next iteration of the smartphone wars. The new Nokia phones appear to be very good, but unable to get any attention. Apple is announcing their new iPhone on September 12, and there seem to be a rumble of tech writers who have already been lured to Samsung.
Led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, 145 House Democrats filed an amicus brief with the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit opposing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The law, which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marrige, is being defended by House Republicans.
The group — which includes several members of Congress who voted for DOMA back in 1996 — now believes that DOMA “lacks a rational relationship to any legitimate federal purpose and accordingly is unconstitutional,” according to the brief. The brief says that some members of Congress “capitalized” on “false stereotypes and reflexive bias” that dominated the public debate.

ThinkProgress now reporting Husted rescinded his directive and early voting hours would be set. I said yesterday, if he’s smart he’ll show up for that hearing with the issue moot so I guess he’s a little bit smart.
BREAKING: Ohio Secretary Of State Backs Down, Allows Local Officials To Set Early Voting Hours
By Scott Keyes on Sep 7, 2012 at 2:52 pm
After previously trying to restrict early voting, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted (R) today reversed course on his decision to block county boards of elections from setting their own early voting hours in the days leading up to the November election.
Last month, Husted and Ohio Republicans led an effort to limit early voting hours in Democratic counties, including those with major cities like Columbus and Cleveland, while expanding early voting in Republican counties. After the ensuing uproar, Husted moved to restrict voting hours across the state, only to have his cuts to early voting restored by a federal court.
You have no idea how crazy your schedule gets when that happens. I want to sit down.
Good God, gex, sorry to hear that. I hope the medical machine swings swiftly into action and that everything goes as well as it possibly can in such a tough situation. I’m glad you have care.
And I hope you get to sit down. Preferably with a beverage. Best of luck to you.
I am a couple weeks short of one year cancer free. It was an ordeal I would not want to go through if I had a choice & mine was pretty easy. It was also stage 2 & only required radiation, no chemo.
SHe will get down, maybe not right away but sooner or later it get to everyone. Take care of yourself as this will drain you also & its easy not to see it & other people not to expect it – after all “its not happening to you”
BTW – boys should get the HPV vaccine also, DR. believes mine was caused by the virus

So sorry to hear this. Glad you have insurance and sounds like they caught the cancer fairly early. Prayers and fingers crossed and everything for all y’all.
I’ve just learned that an old friend died this morning after a very swift onset of Lou Gehrig’s disease. He checked himself into hospice about a week ago knowing he’d lose the ability to breathe any day. While he was in hospice waiting for death he was on his computer working for the Obama campaign! The guy was all “go” and no “no”. One of the reasons he was so committed to working for Obama right up to the end is that his care was completely covered under Medicare (he was 66) and the home health/hospice through Medicaid. He wanted to make sure that the care he got would be available to folks coming after him.
RIP, Andy. You were and are a great inspiration.

We are really lucky in so many ways. My employer added partner benefits for us and we caught this relatively early.
Prognosis is really good. Treatment will be 5-6 weeks of daily radiation and weekly chemo. Surgery is actually a worse option than the non-invasive treatments apparently. Surgery still requires radiation, and I guess outcomes for people who have that aren’t as good as radiation/chemo. And they say that radiation/chemo doesn’t make you feel as nauseated as they used to.
I wish everyone in our situation had it as easy as we do.
Thanks you guys!

@Emma: Re: using tropicals for a cottage-garden look, coleus can look almost tapestry-like. Elephant ears can look pretty decorative and come in different sizes. Butterfly gingers and other gingers can add structure, and so can canna lilies and variegated bananas. Persian shield has a great iridescent purple color, and would make a good accent. Salvias aren’t tropicals, but they reseed and come in lots of colors. For shade, impatiens and caladiums. These are all pretty easy to dig out and move around if you want to change your design.

He has a history of doing so when things aren’t working out for him, and I think by the end of September/1st week October, he’s going to realize that the only thing his UNLIMITED CAMPAIGN CASH is going to buy him is a permanent, never-to-be-removed “L” on his record. If you want a really funny book about battling cancer (no, really!), Julia Sweeney’s God Said Ha! is really a terrific (and fast) read. The chapter about accidentally meeting the UCLA researcher who is studying her specific type of cancer is probably my favorite, but the whole book is full of great stuff.

@Brachiator: iPad will probably roll out in October. More like an 8″, though. Notably roomier than the 7″ tablets.
I don’t think they’ll go for $249, though. I’d guess $299 for an 8GB wifi, with an upsell to larger capacity and LTE. And they’ll stop selling the iPad 2 in the process. They don’t need to match pricing with the 7″ – they’ll count on the iPad name to give up the extra $50. They’ve always been able to count on a little brand upsell to work in their favor.
The clue to pricing will likely come in where they position pricing for the new iPod Touch next week. If it stays at $199 and doesn’t gain some notable features, I think it’ll be hard for them to position the new tablet at $249. Working out the price tiers is one of the bigger challenges for them with this product.
But the new 7″ tablets are solid competitors. I don’t care for Amazon’s carrier approach here by requiring an $80/yr subscription to Prime for the tablet to be useful, and the ads, but the Nexus 7 is a different story. That’s a hit.
92.

@Schlemizel: I was surprised to hear that it’s been a year already, but for you it has no doubt felt like a lifetime.
I have been wondering lately whether you are still having the awful (my word) dryness of the mouth or whether that has been getting better.
I don’t think they’ll go for $249, though. I’d guess $299 for an 8GB wifi, with an upsell to larger capacity and LTE. And they’ll stop selling the iPad 2 in the process. I agree that the iPod Touch may be a clue to pricing for an iPad mini.
But $299 for 8GB is a very, very hard sell. The iPad name is not that valuable. The google nexus tablet is not merely pushing the “google name,” it is an extremely good product at a reasonable price.
So, $199 for an 8GB Nexus tablet vs $299 for an iPad mini? Sorry, that’s a $100 premium for a name. I don’t think this will fly.
I am also not sure that I even see the point of an iPod Touch if you have a reasonably priced iPad Mini.
But the new 7” tablets are solid competitors. I don’t care for Amazon’s carrier approach here by requiring an $80/yr subscription to Prime for the tablet to be useful, and the ads, but the Nexus 7 is a different story. That’s a hit.
Amazon is selling services as well as hardware. There are a lot of people who already have Amazon Prime for the free shipping features, so they would not necessarily see it is “necessary” to make the tablet useful, but an incentive. And Amazon Prime is cheaper than the annual cost of a Netflix subscription.
No way. He has to continue this race even if it turns out to be a death march right up to the bitter end.

And Coors Light. That’s in my future too.

KAY, DID YOU SEE THIS?

My thoughts are with you guys.
I am a couple weeks short of one year cancer free. It was an ordeal I would not want to go through if I had a choice & mine was pretty easy. It was also stage 2 & only required radiation, no chemo.
SHe will get down, maybe not right away but sooner or later it get to everyone. Take care of yourself as this will drain you also & its easy not to see it & other people not to expect it – after all “its not happening to you”
BTW – boys should get the HPV vaccine also, DR. believes mine was caused by the virus
gex
@Betty Cracker: Thanks! The prognosis is really good, all the medical professionals act like this is more of a pain in the ass than something seriously life-threatening. I know that it is still cancer so it is serious, but that is comforting.
Thankfully, I am lucky enough to work for a company that went out of their way to add partner benefits to the contract for me.

@rikyrah: It still seems strange that they claim equal voting opportunity but still let different counties set different hours.

@Chyron HR: I have a prediction. I think Romney’s going to drop out near the end of this month.
I’m serious.
He has a history of doing so when things aren’t working out for him, and I think by the end of September/1st week October, he’s going to realize that the only thing his UNLIMITED CAMPAIGN CASH is going to buy him is a permanent, never-to-be-removed “L” on his record. He’ll bail and let the blue-eyed Randian devil take the fall.

Yep. The google Nexus 7 with 16GB is $249. The Kindle Fire HD 7 inch tablet with 32 GB is $249 (but not available until October).
If Apple comes in with a 7 inch tablet at this price point (esp, perhaps, with front and rear cameras), they might kick some serious butt.

WaterGirl
@Schlemizel: I was surprised to hear that it’s been a year already, but for you it has no doubt felt like a lifetime.
I have been wondering lately whether you are still having the awful (my word) dryness of the mouth or whether that has been getting better.
Congratulations on (almost) one year!
Brachiator
@? Martin:
I agree that the iPod Touch may be a clue to pricing for an iPad mini.
But $299 for 8GB is a very, very hard sell. The iPad name is not that valuable. The google nexus tablet is not merely pushing the “google name,” it is an extremely good product at a reasonable price.
So, $199 for an 8GB Nexus tablet vs $299 for an iPad mini? Sorry, that’s a $100 premium for a name. I don’t think this will fly.
I am also not sure that I even see the point of an iPod Touch if you have a reasonably priced iPad Mini.
