At most three of y’all will care about this… but Az State’s new coach, Todd Graham, gets his first real test tonight vs. Illinois. The Sun Devils made a great debut against Northern Arizona U., crushing them 63-3 (as they should have).
Those of us over 40 grew up spoiled on Frank Kush’s desert dynasty. Ever since his reign was prematurely ended a third of a century ago (gasp) by a cowardly athletic director whose name shall not be said, we’ve been waiting for the 2nd coming of Kush.
Hoping Graham proves he’s the real deal and not another in a long string of disappointing mediocrities. Fear The Fork!

While perusing the “Thoughtful Conservative” post by Anne Laurie several posts earlier, I encountered the name Ramesh Ponnuru. Perfect name for a defensive end or linebacker, probably at USC. Oh, and Renato? (Sorry about misspelling your name, I can’t make that symbol) I remember Kush very well. A lot of people thought he was a thug, and maybe he was, but he was a helluva coach. The fact that he was so colorful and entertaining was icing on the cake. Pac12, baby!

@Evolving Deep Southerner: Since from all the press I’ve read the SEC folks don’t seem to be taking either of these two teams seriously, I hope they both win. I don’t dispute deserved dominance of SEC teams in the national spotlight the past few years but it wouldn’t hurt to shake things up a little bit, maybe bring a little more diversity to offensive schemes and suchlike–and no, I am not saying that a team like Missouri currently competes with an Alabama or LSU (but then how many other teams in the nation do atm).

@Haydnseek: Sun Devil Stadium was a place where visiting teams – ranked or not – entered with apprehension and often left on the losing end. Hasn’t been that way since Kush left. John Cooper is the only coach who even began to redeem ASU’s reputation as a top football school.
Perhaps ASU would have one day graduated from the WAC to the PAC-10, but it would not have happened when it did if it weren’t for Kush.

Well, this is a football thread, just not the same football but the US really showed its ass last night against Jamaica. A more sluggish performance would be hard to find. @marcopolo: I am reminded of Nebraska’s first game in the Big 10, against the Wisconsin Badgers. Badgers showed them how Big 10 football is played, and it took UN awhile to recover, which they did, nicely, upholding the Big 10 reputation in the post season. I hope the opposite is true with the new SEC teams. The SEC needs some slapping around, and I hope it starts today.

The big dogs of the Southeastern Conference underrate the newcomers at their peril. It’s not like either Texas A&M or Missouri is being promoted from some minor league. Have to admit I’m pulling for Mizzou. Georgia is probably the better team, but I just don’t buy all the “SEC is God” hype. Florida barely beat Texas A&M today, and the Dawgs look like they’ve got their hands full tonight.

@Haydnseek: It’s really embarrassing, irritating, and depressing to see the talent US MNT have fucking around with Jamaica. I had to hunt down a bar (Ruby Tuesday’s that has DirecTV to find “beinSport,” Al Jazeera’s sports TV entry) to watch the game. Jesus, it just gets worse. Yesterday I was lit up by Chris Kluwe, but after that Jamaica game, I was, and am still, in a grim mood.
N.B. USC is beating the “do-Jesus” out of ECU so that is something.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@Thlayli: I blame Donna Shalala. Damn Democrats fuck up everything.
Jamie
And Penn State is feeling those sanctions right now.
Gator90
@bk: Stuff like that makes me feel like a bad person for liking football so much.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@Gator90: Um. I assume your mood’s about like my better half’s mood right now.
Steeplejack
The big dogs of the Southeastern Conference underrate the newcomers at their peril. It’s not like either Texas A&M or Missouri is being promoted from some minor league. A&M seems to be handling Florida right now (17-10 just before the half), and I think there is a very good chance that Missouri will beat Georgia tonight.
Gator90
@Evolving Deep Southerner: Well, it’s still better than my better half’s. Gators are lucky to be down only 7 considering how thoroughly they were dominated for 2 quarters.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@Gator90: Man, even apart from injuries, that arm-tackling … looks like UGA when Willie Martinez was our defensive coordinator.
Evolving Deep Southerner
I hate to be ugly, but how will anyone ever know if Lou Holtz has a stroke?
befuggled
@Evolving Deep Southerner: I cannot stand Holtz. He’s clearly a smart guy and he can be very funny, but he’s physically incapable of being objective about either Notre Dame or South Florida (where his son is head coach).
Evolving Deep Southerner
@Gator90: Good on y’all, brother. Mrs. EDS is happy. So I am happy. I know it’s not over, but by God, whatever happens, great game.
Gator90
@Evolving Deep Southerner: Sounds like everybody’s happy except Mrs. Gator and the in-laws. Be interesting to see what the Dawgs do…
Evolving Deep Southerner
@Gator90: I hope it’s at least as “interesting” as what the Gators did. I have a deep sense of foreboding about it myself, but I feel that way about most games. We’ll see what we’ll see. Win or lose, I’m just ready to get the damn thing played and over with. If we win, by God, I will feel real good going into the meat of the season with our ne’er-do-wells on defense back. If we don’t, well, it just shows we need those ne’er-do-wells too much for our own good.

Aite mothefuckers “Who’s that comin down the track. . .?”
Steeplejack
I guess this is still the football thread.
Georgia-Missouri just kicked off. Mizzou wearing some weird retro-looking uniforms, possibly from a Steelers yard sale.
raven
Take that mickey mouse bullshit back to the Big 12.
raven
@Steeplejack: Tryin for camo but they can’t hide.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@raven: Lotta fucking slop so far. We ring that hotshot QB’s bell, this one’s over.
raven
@Evolving Deep Southerner: goddamnit
raven
FuckinA
raven
so predictable
Mr Stagger Lee
@Steeplejack: It took me awhile to figure out WTF was on Mizzou’s helmets. Post-modern look of a tiger. Anyway, I like to see another champion from another conference, but to tell the truth, I do not like USC because of that weasel Lane Kifflin.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@raven: I’m not truly worried. Yet. Give Murray a Valium and ring Franklin’s bell, and this game’s over.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@raven: Have you ever seen a sloppier piece of shit of a game in your God damn life?
raven
Yes, remember, 27 years
Steeplejack
Just got home from getting takeout. I thought Georgia was supposed to be up 20 by now.
Oops, and Mizzou scores!
raven
sheesh
Steeplejack
And the Dawgs answer back! Glad I didn’t miss anything while I was out.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@Steeplejack: Grantham and Bobo better be making some hellacious second-half adjustments right now. I don’t know whether the answer is to run, pass, shit or go blind. I hope they know better than me. That’s why they make the big bucks.
All I know is that Elvis has left the building now. If we can’t blow through that hole and fuck Franklin’s shit up, we deserve to lose.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@raven: What game was sloppier than this 27 years ago?
Steeplejack
@Evolving Deep Southerner:
Have to admit I’m pulling for Mizzou. Georgia is probably the better team, but I just don’t buy all the “SEC is God” hype. Florida barely beat Texas A&M today, and the Dawgs look like they’ve got their hands full tonight.
raven
@Steeplejack: 4 fucking starters on D are out!
Evolving Deep Southerner
@Steeplejack:
Fixed that for you.
Evolving Deep Southerner
@raven: So? We should still be beating this crowd. We lose, that won’t be my whine.
raven
@Evolving Deep Southerner: 27, shit the south carolina game last year
Mr Stagger Lee
Can’t watch anymore LSU-Washington, Nebraska-UCLA much better. Hats off to Sacramento State! And Wisconsin’s loss to Oregon State is FSM’s judgement for the failure to recall Scott Walker,may FSM’s judgement be harsh on the Packers!
Steeplejack
@raven:
You have to play with the team you have, not the suspended dillweeds you wish you had.
raven
fuck all ya all
Steeplejack
@raven:
LOL.

I don’t know but it’s red and black
