Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The words do not have to be perfect.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Republicans in disarray!

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

He really is that stupid.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

No one could have predicted…

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

At most three of y’all will care about this… but Az State’s new coach, Todd Graham, gets his first real test tonight vs. Illinois. The Sun Devils made a great debut against Northern Arizona U., crushing them 63-3 (as they should have).

Those of us over 40 grew up spoiled on Frank Kush’s desert dynasty. Ever since his reign was prematurely ended a third of a century ago (gasp) by a cowardly athletic director whose name shall not be said, we’ve been waiting for the 2nd coming of Kush.

Hoping Graham proves he’s the real deal and not another in a long string of disappointing mediocrities. Fear The Fork!

OK, Florida-Texas A&M and Georgia-Missou. Will the newcomers join the SEC with 1-0 starts? I’d hate to see that – especially on the UGA/MO front – but it’s looking likely.

While perusing the “Thoughtful Conservative” post by Anne Laurie several posts earlier, I encountered the name Ramesh Ponnuru. Perfect name for a defensive end or linebacker, probably at USC. Oh, and Renato? (Sorry about misspelling your name, I can’t make that symbol) I remember Kush very well. A lot of people thought he was a thug, and maybe he was, but he was a helluva coach. The fact that he was so colorful and entertaining was icing on the cake. Pac12, baby!

@Evolving Deep Southerner: Since from all the press I’ve read the SEC folks don’t seem to be taking either of these two teams seriously, I hope they both win. I don’t dispute deserved dominance of SEC teams in the national spotlight the past few years but it wouldn’t hurt to shake things up a little bit, maybe bring a little more diversity to offensive schemes and suchlike–and no, I am not saying that a team like Missouri currently competes with an Alabama or LSU (but then how many other teams in the nation do atm).

But what he got fired for, was a load of bollocks. I’m sure he’d been tougher than that with players other than Rutledge (the punter who alleged Kush had slapped him around).

@Haydnseek: Sun Devil Stadium was a place where visiting teams – ranked or not – entered with apprehension and often left on the losing end. Hasn’t been that way since Kush left. John Cooper is the only coach who even began to redeem ASU’s reputation as a top football school.

Perhaps ASU would have one day graduated from the WAC to the PAC-10, but it would not have happened when it did if it weren’t for Kush.

Well, this is a football thread, just not the same football but the US really showed its ass last night against Jamaica. A more sluggish performance would be hard to find. It looks like Klinsmann will have to go back to California retirement before he does any more damage to the MNT and our hopes for a decent showing in World Cup competition.

@marcopolo: I’m a second-generation UGA grad and a big fan, but I’m not a homer. We looked flat as hell in the home opener, which you might write off to the coaches keeping it plain-vanilla in the home opener against a cupcake. But it’s hard to write off the fact that several of the key players on our mega-hyped defense are suspended and didn’t even make the trip to Columbia. We’ll see what we’ll see, but I’m pessimistic.

@marcopolo: I am reminded of Nebraska’s first game in the Big 10, against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Cornhusker fans in WI were talking a lot of smack about the superiority of Cornhusker football cf. all other kinds for days in advance of the game. Badgers showed them how Big 10 football is played, and it took UN awhile to recover, which they did, nicely, upholding the Big 10 reputation in the post season. I hope the opposite is true with the new SEC teams. The SEC needs some slapping around, and I hope it starts today.

While y’all are buried in your football for the day, Gallup has Obama at a net +10 favorably (unfavorable dropped by a point over yesterday) and +4 over Romney (up a point over yesterday).

The former is a 3 day rolling average and is likely to improve slightly more, the latter is a 7 day rolling average is should pick up a few more points.

Looking like a real bounce for Obama, none for Romney. First debate is in 4 weeks.

And good GOD, the Auburn/MSU game … want to talk about a game that’s much closer in terms of score than it is on the field. Auburn almost looks like it’s TRYING to turn the ball over as much as it possibly can. I predict AU is rapidly reverting to the Gene Chizik mean. He had a horse shoe up his ass with Cam Newton, but he’s shat that baby now. Without Newton, we’ll see what kind of coach he is. And I strongly suspect there’s no “there” there.

And there’s your operative phrase right there. They’ve priced working people out of attending games.

But I think I’ve told you before, I might not ever attend an in-person game again. And that’s not even specific to ball games. The older I get, the more crowd-averse I’ve become. Thank God for HDTV and surround-sound.

Just got home from getting takeout. I thought Georgia was supposed to be up 20 by now.

    Oops, and Mizzou scores!

@Steeplejack: Grantham and Bobo better be making some hellacious second-half adjustments right now. I don’t know whether the answer is to run, pass, shit or go blind. I hope they know better than me. That’s why they make the big bucks.

All I know is that Elvis has left the building now. If we can’t blow through that hole and fuck Franklin’s shit up, we deserve to lose.

    @Evolving Deep Southerner:

Have to admit I’m pulling for Mizzou. Georgia is probably the better team, but I just don’t buy all the “SEC is God” hype. Florida barely beat Texas A&M today, and the Dawgs look like they’ve got their hands full tonight.

    Fixed that for you.

Can’t watch anymore LSU-Washington, Nebraska-UCLA much better. Hats off to Sacramento State! And Wisconsin’s loss to Oregon State is FSM’s judgement for the failure to recall Scott Walker, may FSM’s judgement be harsh on the Packers!
