Worth noting that it’s not “Republicans” in general who are being assholes about the Libya attacks, it’s mostly just the Romney campaign:
In a statement issued late Tuesday, Romney expressed outrage and said “It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”
Romney reiterated his concerns Wednesday morning, telling reporters that differences in statements from Cairo and Washington about the attacks “reflects the mixed signals” that the Obama administration is “sending the world.”
But no Republican leader criticized President Obama Wednesday morning and called instead for stronger security at U.S. diplomatic facilities, the swift capture and punishment of the perpetrators and a renewed commitment to pro-democracy efforts in the Arab world.
“Reiterated his concerns”. Sigh.

Yes, yes, Mitt, it’s smart to criticize the US Embassy in Libya for a statement that was released when they were under attack, and were trying to quell the violence, AND THE AMBASSADOR WAS ALREADY FECKIN’ DEAD!

I always thought that Romney was an incompetent coward. In addition to that, he also apparently is delusional. He actually believes that he has foreign policy chops, and that he can as easily get away with spouting bullshit about international issues as he does with domestic issues.
I’m also wondering whether his advisors, even the evil dwarf returnees from the days of Dubya, approve the crap he is spouting, or urge any caution at all.

Romney is shamefully pandering to the violent minded American Taliban population in the GOP, that are, like the idiot wingnut preacher in Florida, doing their best to keep the blood flowing, this time, courtesy of knee jerk Islamic extremists that are peas in a pod with our Christian extremists. Every time Romney talks, he has to hope that someone watching him does NOT think, “so what would you do, instead?”

I have to say that as much as I’ve despised Romney ever since his 2008 comment about “doubling” Guantanamo, said with a glassy-eyed gaze and game show host smile, I am surprised at how completely empty-headed his foreign policy comments have been, even before the last twelve hours.

TLDR the top of the thread, so apologies if this has already been covered, but Josh Marshall has a couple of posts up right now that make me think that even though some in the traditional media will try to equivocate on this problem, Romney has stepped far more deeply into the shit than he realizes:
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/09/not_excellent_news_for_mitt_romney.php?ref=fpblg
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/09/when_you_learn_theyre_not_ready.php?ref=fpblg
Marshall seems to me to normally be a pretty reliable bellweather of what people inside the press corps are talking and thinking. If he’s right about this, Romney has just shattered all his credibility on foreign policy. And it’s the same problem he’s got with domestic policy, which the Village press is getting fed up with, slowly but surely – merely pointing and saying “Obama sucks” but declining to offer any specific policy alternatives.
Aside from all of that, and first and foremost, he shat all over Chris Stevens, Sean Smith and the other two diplomats who lost their lives.
Really, there is no other way to put it – the way Romney has behaved since 10:00 pm last night is one of the most shameful days in US presidential political history.

It’s a thoroughly evil approach, of course, and they’re doing it ungracefully and unconvincingly, but they understand enough to know that if they show their policy hand, no one will vote for them. Fuck, Mittens just lost Dancing Dave Gregory:
Is it time to resurrect #RomneyShambles?

Edited to improve accuracy slightly.

@The Moar You Know:
Right. I’m counting heads.
So far the only Republicans who are backing Romney on this are the head of the RNC, Palin and Gingrich.

@kay: As a general rule, being on the same side as Sarah Palin in any sort of controversy ought to trigger profound self-investigation as to how one’s life got so screwed up.

I hate when I get my Gilda Radner characters mixed up.

Losing the core MSM media and, to an extent, the “core” DC repubs will possibly only help cement his fraying and ever-tentative hold on the 27% (“Lie-beral Media! Insiders!”). I still think MittBott’s playing to the wings, not to the larger audience.

I wouldn’t necessarily phrase it as “more..than I thought” because I’ve always regarding him as extremely dangerous person, but this latest incident takes somewhat more abstract concerns about Romney’s character and judgement and crystalizes them in a way that, like Samuel Johnson’s proverbial prospect of a hanging, concentrates the mind wonderfully.

@dmsilev:
They’ll have to paper over their differences with the smirking douchebag because they elected him and they’re stuck with him.

With Romney’s disgusting diss of the Whitehouse – he forgot one thing…Obama takes pride in his counterpunching.

@RareSanity:
It happens far more often than it should. (I mean in general, not directed at you.)
Although, frankly, I think Money Boo Boo would be better served having Roseanne Roseannadanna as his VP pick.

Foregone Conclusion
You know what pisses off independents? This.
Romney is obviously not a very nice person. But he is also, in my mind, one of the worst candidates I have ever seen, almost on a level with Sarah Palin. I’ve campaigned at a very, very low level for candidates who don’t have anywhere near the campaigning experience of Romney and his team, but who would beat them a hundred times over on natural judgement on how to persuade people and *win elections*. With this action, Romney has drawn attention to himself as a lightweight and a complete dick at a moment when voters are naturally inclined to ‘rally round the flag’, on an issue where Obama already holds a natural advantage.

I think Romney’s playing to Sheldon Adelson, who called in a chit for continued funding.

@kay: And Sununu is their number one surrogate! Jeepers. When Sununu is telling you that perhaps patience is a virtue when dealing with events like this – when Sununu is looking more presidential than you – you are in trouble.

I keep saying to myself, “That’s it, that’s the peak — there’s no way Romney can do anything dumber than that,” and then damned if I don’t say the same thing two or three days later.
But the embassy stuff is the peak — there’s no way Romney can do anything dumber than that.

i think i’ll just go with ‘mendouchity’.

I think that’s an awkward grin of “Oh, shit, now what?”. Not that George Romney doesn’t owe it to this country to come back and go up one side of Willard’s head and down the other, then he can move on to his smug prick grandsons.
as to Virginia, how many career state department (and defense, and CIA, NSA, and….) employees and their friends and families, who might otherwise be inclined to vote for Willard and tax cuts, has he pissed off this morning?
amk
@Suffern ACE:
Nope.
MattF
@Hungry Joe: Romney must really think that whatever he says is all good if it persuades someone to vote for him. It’s just a sales pitch– if your voice is resonant and you make eye contact, you’re doing the job.

@Hungry Joe:
Let’s be fair here, though: this particular instance of dumbassery is unlikely to harm Romney much, if only because this entire affair is, at face value, not good for the president. It shouldn’t be lost in all of this that our security failed in Benghazi, it failed in Cairo, and people are dead as a result. It’s not anywhere near an Iraq-level fiasco, but it is bad. Bad for the commander-in-chief.
Frankly, a competent campaign could have turned this into Obama’s Iran hostage crisis moment. (Tha Carter II, if you will.)
Obama is very fortunate today that there is no competent campaign running against him.
Suffern ACE
@Tractarian: Yep. We could be having “Fast and Furious” style hearings into the poor state embassy security. But instead, we get “He didn’t condemn fast enough and hard enough!”
Lurking Canadian
@Chris: If the reports are correct that the instigators’ location is known, said instigators are about to get clobbered. I don’t think the president has any choice about that.
I’m kind of surprised it hasn’t already been flattened by a cruise missile, actually.

Peak Romney is a Lie.
