Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

I am Drunk and Listening to This

Always loved Stan Ridgway and Wall of Voodoo. Here is one of my favorites:

I also always loved this one:

And, of course, there is the quintessential Wall of Voodoo song:

I have a very eclectic taste in music, I know, but I have spent many hundreds of hours listening to Ridgway.

I’ve got an ad on this page for chocolate Frosted Flakes cereal.

Jesus crap. Why don’t you just have a stent put in leading directly to your aorta and pour in some rubber cement. Ugh.

I’m kind of partial to Ridgway myself. “Southbound” is another good one.

It started going in circles. Put one hand on the wall and the opposite foot on the floor. The room should stop spinning or you’ll throw up.

Saw WoV in East Lansing at Dooleys (horrid college beerhole for those of you unfamiliar) back in the ’80s. They were great.

I can’t sleep. Insomnia blows. Don’t know whether to lie down or play more records so I’m harassing old friends on FB as a compromise. Maybe I should break out the Johnnie Walker & see if that works but that seems so degenerate.

Since it’s 3:00 am here, a very weird hour, here’s a respected English folk rocker doing an acoustic version of Oops I Did it Again.
    It rocks.

Well Cole, I owe you a beer for that Ring of Fire rendition, even if the video posted shit itself at about two and a half minutes on both my devices. Weird that despite loving Mexican Radio when it played on a radio station from my days of yore, I never thought of exploring further into Wall of Voodoo in this day and age.

I saw Ridgway just last spring in Norway, where I live. It was the fourth time I have seen him live and he was as good as ever.

Huge Ridgway fan. Call of the West is a fantastic recording from a largely unappreciated band (Wall of Voodoo).

This is a fairly recent song from Stan sort of an abbreviated autobiography of Wall of Voodoo, it’s brilliant.

“Mosquitoes” is still my favorite album, with “Mission in Life” my favorite track. I saw him live in North Hampton MA, years ago, and when we were talking afterward he was in a mood to sign things. Since I didn’t happen to have a CD with me, he snatched my take-out paper dinner bag from hands and signed it. I cut out the square of paper and keep it in the CD case.

Face it John (and others) you’re just really freaking old.

And when a 48 year old married for 23 years calls you old. You’re really really freaking old.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…. Is there a Law and Order rerun on? Oh well, I have all seven seasons of The West Wing on DVD so I have that going for me.

Face it? I embrace that, and I’m 5 years older than you. I have records that I bought new in the sixties and CDs of new bands that came in the mail last week. A broad range of music appreciations means you’re not stuck with what happens to be popular at the moment.

I had forgotten about Rumble Fish until I read Stewart Copeland’s book last summer. Tom Waits was in that as well. Don’t Box Me In got decent play on college radio back in ’83.

I never got to see WoV with Ridgway, but I was a fan, and I’m one of the few who also liked the Andy Prieboy albums, and saw that configuration perform once (they were awesome).

I finally got to see Ridgway perform a couple of years ago here in NY and he was amazing and moving and exciting. There is something just so evocative about WoV’s music — Call of the West, Back in Flesh, Can’t Make Love all, in words and music, speak so poetically to the alienation lurking behind the American dream (and I think that they unexpectedly managed to continue that spirit on the post-Ridgway records too).

I never got into the Ridgway solo albums as much — I still think he’s a hell of a songwriter but the music wasn’t as sonically and rhythmically compelling to me.

Also, if you haven’t seen it, get Urgh! A Music War for a great performance of Back in Flesh along with others from countless essential bands from 79-82. You can buy it from WB Archive’s web site as a DVD-R, well worth it.

This is great fodder for a Youtube Rabbit Hole trip. You know, where you watch a video, then watch one of the related videos, then another related video, then another…..

Three hours later, you emerge and wonder where you’ve been.

So, Cole. If you don’t already know it, check out Stan Ridgeway’s version of Brecht & Weil’s “Cannon Song.” It’s on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcmMmHQU8cg
