I’m still nursing some soreness from the accident. The pain meds are helping, and I am slowly getting better.
The insurance company, USAA, should be looking at the car this week. I’m reasonably certain they’ll total it out, and I’ve started shopping for a new one. A couple of readers here, Yutsano especially comes to mind, have recommended that I step up to the Ford Fusion, so I test drove a 2011 model today. I sure hope they still have it when my settlement drops. Normally a car is just something that gets me from A to B, but I really like that Fusion. I had to get a new phone today. The other one that went through the accident–and through the closed window into the street–with me started spontaneously rebooting today and then just shut off and wouldn’t work unless it was plugged into the charger. The new phone, a Samsung Galaxy S III, is fricking amazing.
Anyway, here’s an open thread for you night owls. Have fun.

Cole has already stomped on this thread. FTW!

@The prophet Nostradumbass: -Dude- Sobchak hasn’t read his own blog for like 8 years. Why should he start now?

Holy shit. Did anyone else know Ksenia Sobchak existed?
WHY WASN’T I TOLD?!
*the link is fucking brilliant btw
Steeplejack
And you got bigfooted in three minutes! Is that a new record?
Anyway, hope you feel better. And good luck on the new car.
I have USAA and generally love them. Haven’t had to take advantage of the services in quite a while, thank God.

Wait, what?!
Sooner, can you recap? What happened?

I looked at the Focus before I was offered a huge deal on a 2005 Mini (“totaled” by USAA, coincidentally, even though the damage was minimal. Apparently if it costs more than $1,000 to repair USAA would just as soon total it for their purposes). The Focus and the Honda Fit both looked really attractive to me.
Yutsano
The Fusion gets almost as good gas mileage as the Focus, plus it’s roomier and drives like a dream. I was just being pushy because I remember that feeling when I first sat in the Malibu. It FELT right. If you feel that, you got your car.
Oh and there is a Fusion hybrid.

well it is HIS blog after all, if he wants to go all Leslie Gore on it, who am I to argue? I read damn near everything on this blog anyways regardless of the front pager and all of the comments too, so in this day and age can’t we just all enjoy the largesse and switch back and forth between threads like adults?
@efgoldman: while that was crazy, WKU beating UK on their home field in overtime was also pretty…. “ballsy”
and Sooner… get well soon man, pain meds, football and bad TV marathons (you know, stuff like Star Trek or Twilight Zone back to back, or even Outer Limits if you got it) will help you pass the time blissfully.

@Corner Stone:
Or should it be “clarity of ethos”?
Fuck it. I don’t care anymore.

@Corner Stone:
I thought that was an autocorrect error for “ethnic cleansing.”

Wow, SG, Glad to hear you’re okay!

Sooner, I missed the thread in which you announced your accident. So sorry, man. Very glad you’re okay.
In other news, I am nowhere near drunk enough.

@suzanne: hopin that you can blissfully imbibe to your heart’s content…. enjoying one last weekend at home before getting back out on the road for two months, this time to exotic Topeka. Have to stay away from the bars else I might try and throw verbal fbombs at the Kansas Legislature.

Enjoy the phone. I’ve got the previous model – the Galaxy S II – and I look down with pity on anyone with a mere iPhone.

@Yutsano: Yutsy, gota agree with the “when you sit in it, feels right test”. My wife had a pretty bad accident a few months ago, totaled her Acrua. We looked at the Prius and Hyundai Elantra, though we both liked the Prius but the Elantra “felt just right”. Also the math didn’t work out as far as price premium for the Prius with her somewhat limited driving.
Sooner, good to hear you’re on the mend.
ETA: I have lust in my heart for the S3, I’ve got Droid Charge. Then again, it’s my starter phone.

USAA is awesome. I have been with them almost 20 years now and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. They will take good care of you!
gelfling545
@BillinGlendaleCA: That is exactly the same experience I had when I was replacing my car in 07. I went out to buy a Toyota & came home with the Hyundai Elantra because it just felt right when I tried it and, at the time, you just couldn’t beat the warranty & financing deal. So far it’s been a sturdy little car that is relatively trouble free.

Soonergrunt, I’m so glad you’re doing ok. Don’t tell anyone, but next to Cole, you’re becoming one of my favorite FPs. Must be a kindred Colorado/military thing.
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
Hey SG,
A couple of years ago my wife J got rear-ended by a huge pick-em-up while merging into a left turn onto a divided parkway. There wasn’t a huge amount of damage to her 2000 Corolla, but she got twisted up pretty badly and has been having continuing muscle pain and tightness, occasional pinched nerves, etc., issues ever since. Make sure you keep an eye on things and don’t forget your claims for “medical payments”.
We’ve got USAA as well, and have generally had good luck with them. But the other driver had USAA, too, so let’s just say that they seem to have taken their time in resolving the medical payments issues in this case; especially when our other insurance company (BCBS) wanted reimbursement… Urg.
Anyway, best of luck with everything. Hang in there and recover quickly.
Cheers,
Scott.

Crikey. Missed your comment about the accident. Glad you came through just sore and out a car and phone. Good golly. Stay safe out there!
Tom Levenson
Feel better.
Take care.

Good luck on your recovery, sooner-g. We bought a Toyota Prius last Labor Day, after owning an Elantra Hyundai hatchback for13 years. Love the Prius, and now there is a “City” model for around 20K. Prius seats5 tall people comfortably, and gets more than 50 mpg.
We looked at the Hyundai Accent which has been reengineered to a better quality; it’s relatively inepensive but thé smog rating was very high.
If you live in an area with harsh winters (lots of ice, snow) like our friends in upstateNY, a hybrid may be too light . In NYC and environs, it is definately OK, and super reliable even after not driving/charging battery for2 months.

I went to a conference in NJ a couple of years ago. Rented a Fusion at the airport in Newark, and – after the conference – drove a giant loop to visit friends living near Boston and Toronto before returning it to Newark and flying home.
Damn – I loved that car. That was the ultimate test drive and I enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve got two kids in college right now (no loans!), so a new car just isn’t in the cards for a while. But if I had the $$$, I’d buy one in a heartbeat.
Violet
Soonergrunt, I missed the comment about your accident. So sorry to hear that. A family member had a very similar thing happen and what everyone who had been through a car accident said was DO NOT SETTLE WITH THE INSURANCE CO FOR AT LEAST THREE MONTHS. Sorry for yelling but they were exactly right so I wanted to make sure I emphasized it.
You can settle on the damages, like to your car and any other property losses like your phone or glasses or whatever. But the minute you settle on the damages to your person you will get nothing else if you discover other injuries. Many injuries aren’t discovered for a few weeks or longer and if you settle too soon you won’t have money to cover treatment for those.
Hang in there. Hope you feel better soon.
Grisha
I bought a 2011 Fusion a month ago & highly recommend it. A great car to drive & a good value.
tomvox1
Why don’t you get a Volt like all the other Commie sympathizers?
Hope you feel better and very happy to hear it wasn’t more serious–getting hit sideways by a big pickup truck is fucking scary. Don’t blame you at all for sticking with Ford after it saved your bacon (and the new designs are sweet!) and thank goodness the socialists in DC mandated increasing levels of air-baggery over the years.

@Violet:
I second what Violet says — when I had my car accident, they didn’t realize I had a plateau fracture of the tibia for several weeks, until it had actually already healed somewhat poorly. So it can take a while. Also, get as much rest as you can, this is very boring but important for healing. Good luck!
The Moar You Know
@tomvox1: I want a Volt. Badly. It’s a hybrid car done properly, not the dual-drivetrain mechanical clusterfuck that the Prius is.
Larkspur
@Steeplejack: Steeplejack, thanks for the link. I missed the original comment too.
Soonergrunt, listen to @Violet: because this is very very important. And take notes starting right the heck now. You want a record of exactly how this has affected you: all out-of-pocket expenses that relate to the accident, the cost of anything you had to cancel because of it, and a daily report of what hurts, even if you’re not sure if it’s directly related to the accident.
If this is all resolved in a fair and sensible way, you won’t need those notes. But you cannot reconstruct them adequately further down the line. (In a totally non-auto-related incident, an over-exuberant dog I was caring for jumped up unexpectedly and his head slammed into me, right under my chin. I bit my tongue bloody and developed a big blue-black bruise, but it wasn’t till weeks later, at a routine dental cleaning, that I found out I’d cracked a crown. Not cheap.)
Also, thank you everyone for the car reviews. Had I been in this accident, in my wee little 1988 Honda Civic with no airbags and no way to call 911 except to yell real loud, I’d probably be ded ded ded. I’ve been trying to stash the cash to get a newer car, so this car talk is very helpful.
