Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Republicans in disarray!

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Knives from across the pond…

Somehow, I’m sure that this is good news for Mitt Romney:

Cameron ‘claimed Britain is united against Mitt Romney’

David Cameron described US Presidential candidate Mitt Romney as having the “unique distinction of uniting the whole of England against him”…

It seems that Mittens is a uniter, not a divider.

How about a late night open thread…

Cheers

I guess that Anglo Saxon solidarity thing is not quite working out for Romney.

On the other hand, there is a sidebar story noting that Barclays Bank has raised $1 million for Mittens, with more coming from a quiet Mayfair fundraiser.

The oligarchs are going all in for Mittens. Whatever will they do with themselves if he loses?

So the CTU needs to make sure everyone (26,000 teachers) is on board with the offer and Rahm is seeking to use the courts to keep the “children from being held hostage.”

Fuck you, Rahm. You are as responsible, if not more responsible, for the strike, and everyone in the city knows it.

I am trying to remmber the last time I have seen such an unforced error on the part of a presidential candidate. Gerald Ford’s “There is no Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe” comes to mind. These plutocrats don’t seem to do very well when they’re on a level playing field and can’t get by on their wealth and connections.

Cameron is a Tory and so what Cameron means is: British bankers are united against Mitt Romney, as are the bankers of every country except the U.S., because the debt ceiling crisis demonstrated that a Republican Congress with an obedient Republican President will wreck global finance, capital flows, currency markets, etc.

It is simply an accident that the British elite (who speak through Cameron) agree with Britons at large on Romney, although rest assured Cameron’s statement is (accidentally) true

What astounds me is that at least part of American finance seems willing to take a short-term Romney cash-out in tax breaks and deregulation in return for a not-much-longer-term financial crash based on Republican policies

It really does not fall in line with their long-term or even medium-term material interests and that is disturbing to me

    two possibilities:

    1) Paul Krugman and Karl Smith have both done posts recently on their blogs exploring how when they talk to folks in finance, they keep running across some common wacky Ron Paul type ideas about monetary policy and QE in particular. As in, some people in finance have decided that all of economics to date is bullshit and have thrown in with the goldbug types (monetary policy can only hurt, fiscal policy can only hurt, the best policy is rampant lawlessness, etc.)

This may go a lot deeper than just QE, and we may be seeing the economic impact of an ideological logjam in American finance akin to the medieval European guild system’s belief in ideal prices, in which case it will be cleared quickly, if not necessarily cleanly, because of its bullshit nature and the opportunity of others to profit off of stupidity and sluggishness in one part of the world

    2) There is always the possibility of a conspiracy or understanding between American investors and right-wing American politicians to self-harm and suspend business as usual until the Republicans have full power, at which point they will all start acting like long-term-greedy bankers again with no interest in tanking the global economy – a theory favored by some Democrats that I really doubt, and that would just raise more questions as that sort of action is not in their material interest as individuals either, although I suppose enough coordinated pushback from certain large actors could prevent any defectors from realizing gains

. . . . it is honestly almost enough to make one a Marxist, as American pro-Romney capitalists are acting as though they have detected a looming ceiling on ROI in general and desire desperately to cash out

Of course, we also have to factor in Weinstein as a filter but I honestly think that if Cameron isn’t saying this out loud, he has to be thinking it, because it’s true

@burnspbesq: So… not public schools. The high degree of relevance is noted.

Rode the bus from Venice to the airport the other day, and this very nice British woman and I chatted. She’s got to be fairly well off as she owns a flat in Venice a couple 100 meters from the Grand Canal that she visits 4 or 5 times a year, and a place in London.

She asked me about the election and I said I was cautiously hopeful that Obama would win. She said she certainly hoped so, she could not imagine Romney being president.

Since this is mustache-level insight, I declare with full self-satisfaction that all rich people in England hate Mitt Romney.

@BGinCHI: You voted for Rahm Emanuel for Mayor of Chicago? Why?

This guy was consistently a tool when he was in Congress. It was pretty widely known.

And when Emanuel was Chief of Staff to Obama, it was even more widely known.

I’ll grant you it was less than an exceptional cast of opponents.

Gery Chico–the most competent alternative, but pretty clearly a continuation of Daley’s policies and a non-starter with CTU members

Miguel del Valle–the most progressive alternative, but woefully ineffective at fundraising and the campaigning seemed never to break out to a wider audience than Harold Washington era holdovers and a sliver of the current activist community

Carol Moseley Braun–she forced the more viable Black candidates out because she had nothing to lose.

Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins–a credible showing for someone who had not held elected office before, but she failed to make the case that she should go from community organizer to Mayor w/o holding some elected office first.

@Carl Nyberg: You know, in the clear light of day, I’m not sure I did vote for Rahm. I think del Valle, actually. That I can’t remember is not a grace note for me….

@burnspbesq: Jesus Burns, did you read what I wrote?

I think highly paid teachers are worth every penny. I know teachers at Stevenson and places like it.

It wasn’t what I was talking about. Aim before you shoot, please.

I’m going to write this off to Liverpool having no wins yet this season. Grumpy bastard.

@BGinCHI: I voted for del Valle as the best of the alternatives presented, not because I thought he would win. Seriously, not trying to give you a hard time, but you don’t know who you voted for?

@shortstop: You make it sound like he forgot which faith tradition he was raised in.

“I’m pretty sure we believed in God. Monotheism sounds familiar, but I’m not sure there was only one. It seems like there were other people I was expect to know about too. I was more focused on sports, school, my friends and girls, y’know?”
