Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Let there be snark.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Everybody saw this coming.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Second rate reporter says what?

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Ann Romney Snaps at GOP Critics: ‘Stop it. This is Hard.’

::cue tiny violins::

In audio obtained by The Last Word, Ann Romney loses her shit on an Iowa radio station in response to a question about GOP critics who are calling her husband’s campaign a clusterfuck:

“Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring. This is hard. And, you know, it’s an important thing that we’re doing right now and it’s an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt’s qualifications and experience and know how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country.”

Oh cry me a river, Miss Ann. It’s hard for you?

Pshaw.

I kinda feel sorry for her. When she was asked back when about how she felt about Mitt running for President again, she said something along the lines of “Mitt won’t be fulfilled without this.” So she knows nothing she or her family has to offer will “fulfill” Mitt and then on top of this deadening realization, she has to get out there and sing and dance for him or he’ll hurt Ralfaca real bad.

Well you have to admit there was every reason for her to expect 100 percent commitment from republicans after the discipline they showed against gore and Kerry. Why they don’t give them the respect they’re entitled to is beyond me. Perhaps they’re just not fans.

giddily relaying how Ann Romney, for whom Georgette has served on the host committee for several fundraisers in New York, privately reacted to Democratic attacks on her dressage-competing mare. Given how much of a contemptible piece of shit Romney has revealed himself to be, I actually am wondering what his concession speech will be like, and I think it is an actual possibility that he just wouldn’t give one. He’s that much of an entitled asshole.

McCain seemed like an entitled asshole in 2008 – hell, so did Hillary once she fell impossibly behind in delegates, but Mitt is exponentially worse – exponentially doesn’t even cover it. McCain has a soul – it’s shriveled up and atrophied and barely breathing, but it’s there. And he gave a pretty classy concession speech. And Hillary has redeemed herself 10x over with her kick ass performance at State. Mitt? Really don’t think so. He’s a fucking asshole to the bone.

And he’s such an arrogant fuck that I don’t think he’ll be able to accept his defeat to “that one”. He’ll either refuse to give a speech out of pique, or it will be an angry, bitter rant with a 5% chance of dropping the niCLANG bomb or something similar.

Mitt Romney’s campaign handed out $112,500 in bonuses to four of its top staffers, according to new disclosure records filed Thursday.
    __
Richard Beeson, Romney’s national political director, received a $37,500 payment on Aug. 31, in addition to his monthly salary of $13,750, according to records filed with the Federal Election Commission.
    __
In addition, campaign manager Matt Rhoades, policy advisor Lanhee Chen and communications director Gail Gitcho each received $25,000 payments on the same date, filings show. The trio are also paid at the same rate as Beeson, which works out to an annual equivalent of $165,000.

Ann Romney is the wife of a Massachusetts Republican politician . . . in every possible way, she is unused to the Little People talking back at her

Here’s your keystone to Ann Romney:

it’s an important thing that we’re doing right now . . . and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this . . . is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt’s qualifications and experience and know how to be able to have the opportunity

Ann Romney’s father was a miner-turned-engineer-turned-business-owner and a vocal atheist who was baptized after his death by Mitt and Ann, and if you look at this quote you will understand exactly how Ann Romney views her courtship and marriage with Mitt – that she could never be grateful enough that this incredibly successful Mormon businessman would swoop in and run her life for her and give her everything she wanted and the very least she could do was submit to him utterly

I doubt she has any idea why the rest of the United States does not feel the same way about “the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being [she’s] ever known in [her] life” – the sad part is that she is both the victim and the nefarious brainwashing conspiracy itself

The treatment of Michelle in ’08 and Ann in ’12 is a microcosm of the media’s treatment of both political parties. Ann gets undeserved praise simple because she is the Republican candidate’s wife, while Michelle was considered a liability in the press, despite being the far more effective surrogate.

That said, he does seem like a self-entitled arrogant prick of mythological proportions, so I could see him not giving a concession speech.

Obama’s method is simple. If the opposition is crazy, just feed rope. They’ll eventually do something so insane and outrageous that it’ll become clear to even Americans only paying a little attention that they’re batsh*t crazy.

At some point, even the black guy looks better than the crazy.

Me personally, I’m just finally happy to have a president that I’m confident is far smarter than me. I don’t think Dubya was truly dumb, he just wasn’t smart enough to be a good president. Clinton wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t that smart. Obama is the real deal. His patience and intelligence will be something we’ll truly appreciate years from now when he’s gone.

(And we’ll be happy to see him become a Supreme Court Justice someday if we’re lucky).

And yes, I’m an Obot despite the civil liberty disappointments. We could’ve done on gorram of a bunch worse.

I really felt like her beautiful, graceful, heartfelt speech at the convention came directly from that experience…that and how Pres. Obama is treated on a daily basis. She rose above all that, but that emotion and that passion, I felt was fueled by those experiences.

That said, I think to the average veiwer he will bomb. He just doesnt have that gift to make a connection and he has no core. The smirks, the stiffness, the needy smile, the smarminess. Just on personality alone, Mitt’s already lost and head to head the difference will be staggering.

My bet is Obama plays it safe. Keeps the jabs to a minimum, doesnt go for any knockout blows and just by using his usual warm persona, walks away with a neat and tidy win in each debate. No drama, no pain.

My recollection is that Ann went to live with the Romneys when Mitt went on his extended French trip. She was 16 and to be sheltered. I’m assuming she finished high school at the girls’ finishing school she had been attending.

Did she ever get any further education? I know they married and she lived with him and had babies when he was getting his double masters, but did she get any education of her own while he was getting his? Did she want to? Is she smart enough to have really benefited from her own education or to have absorbed a lot as he studied?

She may just be this very sheltered, minimally educated woman who has little understanding of the real world—any real world that any of us are familiar with, not even the Mormon world, as they’ve spent little time in Utah, just the Olympics. She may be way out of her depth whenever she’s out of her own house.

What can she discuss with anybody on a talk show, at a fund-raising dinner party, or at a reception for a prime minister that goes beyond how swell Mitt is (not in any depth, even that, because she has no one to compare with Mitt)?

I’m writing myself into feeling sorry for the poor little rich woman.

I find Ann Romney’s approach to women really off-putting. She seems to have decided that women are looking for a husband in the President, which is just bizarre. The constant references to what we (women) want in a “Guy” are way too personal.

I also think showing empathy and understanding is very different than showing pity. Ann Romney seems to feel sorry for other women, and that’s not appealing, it’s demeaning. I have almost a knee-jerk reaction to what I imagine she thinks are “sympathetic” statements about women; I don’t think she should feel sorry for me.

I’m guessing that part of her problem is that she didn’t have any idea how hard this was going to be and this is her frustration bubbling out.

Her life as wife of Mitt has likely been filled to the brim with people whose job it is to make her life easy with little to no effort on her part to make that happen. With also little to no accountability or problems that she personally, would have to deal with.

Running for president is hard and does take work. Even with a campaign staff and volunteers number in the thousands kissing your feet, there are thousands of people on the other side whose job it is to push their candidate and not assist you. Yes there are people in this world that don’t rely on you for their jobs and don’t feel the need to make your life easier.
