Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

After roe, women are no longer free.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Accountability, motherfuckers.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

He really is that stupid.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Come on, man.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

The Angel Moroni came down and pooped in the main hard drive of my work machine, so I’m halfway through replacing that now. What’s up in your neck of the woods?

My oldest son’s high school band scheduled a car wash fund raise for today. And it’s raining over most of Texas. It should have been scheduled in August, in part because you can mostly count on it not raining that month, and also because it’ll be nearly impossible for them to reschedule. They have band stuff every weekend from next weekend until the end of October.

Somebody came by and messed with the software of my work machine. Dunno any more. Help desk is gone until Monday at 7:00 Central Time.

So. There you are. Looks like my weekend just got a little longer. Hooray!

    September 29, 2012 at 12:24 pm

El Tiburon Jr. has pneumonia and is in the hospital.

Guess I will be thankful for my mid-grade insurance but will still be in for a few thousand bucks for my deductible and 50% coverage and so on.

But grateful for the trained medical staff and medics and ambulance drivers. In Austin we are fortunate to have a dedicated Children’s Hospital: Dell Pediatrics.

I wonder what our journey would have been if I were (like Mitt wished) a poor hispanic or other minority with no insurance and just showed up at the emergency room somewhere with a sick child.

Also thankful that we can afford the deductibles and medicines and so on and that we have cars and family close by.

Otherwise this situation would be a complete nightmare.

I’m pondering Nietzschean eternal recurrance. I was under the assumption that he meant that everyone’s life occurred over and over until you got it right, or something (he was pretty wacked out on syphillis by then). But here it is, Saturday, and what do I do? Go to the grocery store, do the laundry, clean house, Saturday after Saturday.

Maybe he meant that eternal recurrance happens in this one life.

Maybe I should leave off the laundry next Saturday, just to see what happens.

We gots rain. This August was so weird. It was mild and wet when it’s usually high 90’s and oppressively humid. Weird thing is we got that in July, the 100 degree days and then August was like June only with more rain. It has been so weird.

Still mild here. Cool nights, highs in 80’s, although that’s characteristic for September here. Or even hotter. And some hot days in October. Who knows this year.

But I can remember some hot days in December and January, Christmas in 80 degree weather, as a child. Not so much now, the winters are colder and more dangerous.

Airlines security is messed up here as well. Mexican TSA-equivalent confiscated the metal fork from my Boy Scout cutlery set in my backpack. In the terminal if you order restaurant food they give you a metal spoon, a plastic knife and a METAL fork that you could smuggle onto the plane! Mexican TSA-equivalent, your argument is invalid.

I missed most of the last few days’ Romney face-plants due to being extra-culturally immersed but was able to get English language CNN so I watched that. The Romney campaign’s floundering and flopsweat seems to be conventional wisdom now. hard to see how they turn that around.

It’s in the low 70’s and fall colors are peaking here so I’m attempting to get out for a scooter ride.

At the moment I’m watching the pissed off squirrels in my back yard dealing with the loss of a tree and a huge shrub that they used to use as a highway across my back yard. I found a tree removal guy who took out one whole tree, removed the huge shrub, removed a small dead crabapple tree, did a great job of trimming back some major branches on a birch tree and hauled away all the wood. His price was $125.00. I gave him $150 because I would have felt guilty otherwise.

Sweet Jesus” that’s the stupidest strategy ever. To do that, you’d need a more undisciplined debater than Obama. If you believe that Obama is not a great debater, then at the very least ya gotta believe he’s too disciplined and reasoned to even give Romney an opening.

Plus, a zinger or two is one thing, but a debate of only zingers and no substance is a very bad strategy for Romney to take, IMHO.

(btw, when you google “Sweet Jesus”, the like 3rd video down is Joe Scarborough’s “Sweet Jesus” reaction to Romney…it’s officially viral ya’ll..LOL)

We have three, and the two girls run hot and cold with each other. Sometimes they’re fine, and then sometimes they go through a phase where Annie is trying to cause some kind of realignment and she hisses at Charlotte every time Charlotte walks by. Which eventually goads Charlotte into tackling Annie’s head just to teach her a lesson.

IMO, having two (neutered) boys or a girl and a boy together works just fine, but having two females together can be tricky. If your problem kitties are two females, maybe you could mix in a male — that seems to help in our house, at least.

How Democratic Ads Are Exploiting Romney’s ‘47 Percent’ Moment

Bill Burton of Priorities USA, the Democratic super PAC tasked with re-electing the president, recounted earlier in the campaign that they had trouble convincing voters in focus groups that Romney had supported Paul Ryan’s budgets privatizing Medicare while cutting taxes for the rich because they didn’t believe any presidential nominee would endorse such an idea.To overcome this obstacle, Burton sought to wear down Romney’s image by portraying him as an uncaring plutocrat in order to lay the foundation for later attacks focusing on actual tax and budget policy. Whatever the cause, Romney’s personal popularity is now at historically low levels for a major party nominee and there’s mounting polling evidence that swing voters, including seniors, are growing concerned about Ryan’s proposals.
Now Priorities USA sees Romney’s “47 percent moment” as its best bridge between its personal attacks and policy attacks. “It has broken through in a really profound way,” Burton told TPM Friday, noting one recent PPP poll in Florida showed a whopping 89 percent of voters were aware of Romney’s comments.

Must be going around; central Indiana has been gifted with gorgeous fall weather for a couple of weeks now and we’ve gotten lots of rain. Leaves are changing, in the upper 60s during the day and 40s at night. If we had weather like this all year around people would be lined up to move here. Thanks for all the well wishes. Shark jr. is progressing and I think all will be good.

Shark Jr’s Mom and I were discussing how difficult this process would be to not have a car, not have some expendable cash, not have family close by, not be able to take a few days off of work.

And I should have said that we will be able to handle somewhat the large deductible ($2,500 I think) but it will be a big wallop to the pocketbook no doubt.

Also we are fortunate that we live in Austin where Michael and Susan Dell live who in part made this children’s facility possible. We were told if we took him to any other hospital they would transfer him here. Which makes you wonder if there was no Dell Children’s Hospital, what would happen?

I can only imagine (well I really can’t) life in the inner-city of a place like Detroit or similar. I just don’t see those children having access to this kind of care.

    Many GOP Operatives Conceding Ohio

Walter Shapiro: “Many of the well-known Ohio Republicans I interviewed offered their blunt assessments only after they were guaranteed complete anonymity. That is often the Faustian bargain of political journalism in 2012: robotic talking points on the record or something resembling honesty with no names attached. The reason, though, that I am emphasizing the don’t-quote-me part of the equation is that I was stunned by the vehemence of the thumbs-down-on-Mitt verdict. All but conceding the state to Obama, these Republicans were offering what may be the biggest rejection of Ohio since Philip Roth wrote Goodbye Columbus.”

After many hours, yesterday and today, looking for hard information about the House races I’ve had to throw up my hands. There’s too many unknowns to attempt a conclusion. The biggest one is how many 65+ will vote for Obama, Romney’s support in that demographic has collapsed, and for the Dem House candidate; how many will ticket split: vote for Obama and for the Rep House candidate. Another imponderable is this is the first House election since redistricting (gerrymandering.) If voting goes as expected the GOP will keep control. Slightly countering this is it’s a pretty shrewd guess Dems will pick-up some seats. Enough? No way of telling until we get closer to November.

If anybody has any time or money left throwing ’em into House elections is a maximum payoff strategy.
