Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

The Commander Guy reads Powerline so we don’t have to:

It is ironic that Mussolini looks downright modest compared to The One. Maybe I am overstating the case, but it does seem to me that Obama lacks a basic understanding of, and sympathy with, the concepts of pluralism and tolerance that are necessary for any democratic society to function. I think is is truly urgent that we not give Obama another four years to lead the United States down a path that is far too well-trodden and that, history shows, leads only to disaster.

I thought pluralism and tolerance were bad things, anyway. Pluralism often equals Muslims and Ameros. Tolerance makes us gay. Right?

Now that I think of it, the similarities between Obama and Mussolini are striking. In physical appearance, political philosophy, etc. they are practically like identical twins. Why didn’t I see this earlier?

Excuse me, but I’ll be stepping out in search of a black shirt to wear for tomorrow’s debate.

Well, on occasion Obama has talked about us being all together in one nation, and Mussolini discussed how we were really all part of a grand superorganism known as the nation and that the fascist party would be the brain and there could be no class conflict within nations because how could tissues and organs in one being fight each other, and that’s pretty much the same thing, obviously. Clearly she’s not.

The eliminationist rhetoric, usually subtle, is getting past the point of concern. “we have to get rid of Obama” as a general theme outside the boundaries of elections, is increasingly a dog whistle for other solutions, on frequencies received all to well by right wing whack jobs.

And the comment sections of what are considered mainstream right wing blogs, are getting closer and closer to “somebody kill the nigger, now!”

I won’t even venture to Freeperville or Stormfront.

You must have watched the same 1932 Spencer Tracy movie I did last night, “Me and My Gal,” in which Tracy, a cop, has to deal with an altercation between two men in Ed’s Chowder House. They’re both terribly drunk and one keeps hitting the other one in the face with a large fish, and all the drunks are arguing over whether it’s a salmon or a halibut or a shad. It’s hilarious. But maybe you’re just making a general “large fish” reference.

He seemed to be suggesting there was still this huge enthusiasm gap netween the parties — Pubs would walk over hot coals to defeat Obama; young folk and Hispanics were yawning. Lots of pollsters (and I believe the Nate-man) have been saying much the opposite since the conventions, so I don’t know if this reflected some particularly perceptive take on Chuck’s part, or was simply him clinging to an outdated narrative.

C’mon, surely you’ve been invited into the ‘It’s okay, it’s just us white people here – let’s drop some n-bombs and bond’ conversations with the plumber or the delivery guy. Unlimited corporate cash!

President Obama is on track to be the first $1-billion candidate.
    …
To reach $1 billion, the president would need to bring in $117 million in both September and October. That seems well within his reach: Obama’s campaign and the DNC together raised nearly $115 million in August. Their take was likely even bigger in September, thanks in part to the Democratic National Convention, where campaign manager Jim Messina urged supporters to embrace a new method of donation via text messaging.
    __
Meanwhile, Republican challenger Mitt Romney had raised $669 million between his campaign, the Republican National Committee and a joint fundraising committee as of Aug. 31. At his current pace, he is on track to bring in close to $900 million, surpassing the $800-million goal set by his campaign.

10 million donations so far. About $80 per donation.

Romney had to blow through a lot of his winning the primaries and didn’t have much left over for the early general election spending. That’s why he did that $20M bridge loan to spend pre-convention money that wouldn’t come in until post-convention because his donors had maxed out. Remember, contribution limits are set for both pre-convention and post-convention. If you max out pre-, you get reset and can max out again post-.

Holy crap, the battle for Allen West’s seat is getting rough.

Democratic candidate Patrick Murphy struck back on Tuesday at Rep. Allen West (R-FL), after West ran an ad about Murphy’s arrest in 2003 bar-fight. In response, Murphy went after a key event for West in 2003 — when his military career was ended.
    __
In a race that has possibly featured the most intensely negative ads of the cycle, this one is a doozy.
    __
“You need the facts about Allen West in 2003,” the announcer says, in response to how West’s ad touted his own military service in that year. “West was criminally charged with violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice; found guilty of three counts of aggravated assault; and relieved of his command. The final Army report: West ‘performed illegal acts…merited court martial…faced 11 years in prison.’ Allen West: He just isn’t who he says he is.”

I tend to not want to use the term, but I think that reading this crap and the insanity emanating from Ralph Reed, that a significant segment of the wingnut Right has actually descended into something that reeks of anti-Americanism. I think they really are hating on this country, the mainstream of American culture/politics and the demographic/cultural shifts that are indicative of a more inclusive society. Romney himself plays this sour note with his contempt for the “47%.” The GOP base – and the “leadership” that cravenly sucks up to it – is increasingly pathological, delusional and in the grip of hate and resentment. Nothing much there other than their pathologies and crippled psyches. “Conservatism” has been dragged into the gutter.

Both the Washington Post and GQ ran pieces over the weekend highlighting the extent of Romney’s fabled frugality: He uses duct tape to fix things, he built a brick passageway rather than hire a contractor for the job, he only downloads free apps for his iPad. The stories are fascinating, but not in the way the Romney camp intends. Because jam-packing your garbage bags to avoid paying extra per-bag fees and yet building a car elevator for your $12-million beachfront home isn’t charming. It’s pathological.

But what nerve he has. He did that appearance at the mine, the story was all over the place that the miners’ attendance was involuntary, so he puts them in an ad?

They want to reclaim something that never really did exist as they imagine it, and if they can’t have it they want to take the country down. The “far left” never had any impact worth speaking of on a mainstream political party – this is the most destructive and far-reaching “hate America” campaign I’ve seen in my lifetime. And I’ve been through the ’60s, when there were a lot of hysterical lefties running around. But they were always marginalized by comparison, even when they made a lot of noise. Turnout for first day of early voting nearly double that of 2008

The first day of early voting in Lucas County is over, and the turnout was nearly twice that of the first day of early voting in 2008.
According to Meghan Gallagher, director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, 928 people voted today at the Early Vote Center, 1500 N. Superior St.
The compares with 500 on the first day of early voting four years ago, the first presidential election in which Ohio had in-person absentee voting for anyone who wanted to vote early.

Are they claiming that President Obama nationalized Amtrak? Do they not know that Amtrak is a government corporation, i.e. it is not privately owned and operated.
