Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Let’s finish the job.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Infrastructure week. at last.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

I’ll be down in New York City the weekend of November 10, and I was thinking of another Balloon Juice meet-up. What do people think? Too close to the election?

Also, too let’s make sure that one way or another we’re all in a good mood that weekend, by continuing to move the thermometer for Obama.

well, if we win we can drink and celebrate, if we lose we can drown our sorrows (but hopefully that won’t happen.

And funnily enough: I will be in nyc that weekend so that makes me say, yes to the meet-up. :) Sunday or saturday?

did Dems learn nothing from expectations game last time Biden will do fine, but fine=bad w/such high expectation. I see from my twitter timeline, that Ed Schultz and Tweety have all laid out what Biden better do on Thursday and the expectation that Biden wraps Romney’s lies around Ryan’s neck and all I see is a bunch of pundits on our side once again waging an expectations game that no way will Biden win. Ryan wins by default of standing up to Biden. mark my words, Biden will be fine, but the after debate punditry will of course be “not enough” on Biden’s part.

I’d be interested in seeing what Rachel & Lawrence add to the expectations game.

Also, I guess Romney’s new strategy is to ignore what he’s siad the past 18 months helped along by our “liberal” media of course.

Imagine what our friend A. Sullivan would have been like during the Civil War, freaking out after every battle defeat, from Bull Run to The Wilderness, “OMFG! The Unions going to LOSE!”. Or if he had been a Roman orator after Cannae, “HOLY F*#$!, we lost our ENTIRE army! We’re going to LOSE!”. Yeah, defeats are bad, but when your strategic position is as good as Obama’s is in Ohio, you’re still going to win the war.

Okay, I’ll stop talking about Sullivan.

How in the world is it possible that one less than stellar debate performance can cause Democratic support to collapse – at least in the polls? I really don’t understand this development at all.

The only thing I can come up with is the rather odd notion that all of the right-wing kvetching about polls before the debate poisoned the thinking of the pollsters.

The general population of this country will support the Democrat as long as things ‘feel’ safe, even if the feeling is a real as a lubed-up plastic playtoy. If not, they’ll run straight home to home (aka the GOP) is they start feeling a churning in the stomach that don’t feel quite right.

@hildebrand: This interview seems to imply that Obama internal polling shows the firewall still intact.

As an aside, I’ve heard that Obama’s internal polls in 2008 showed a tied race after the GOP convention rather than the +3 McCain race which public poll averages showed. In fact, McCain/Palin never held a lead in the internals. And that Obama’s internal polls moved to +5 Obama during October, less than what many public polls showed, with most of the excess consisting of new voters (which worried the campaign). This is all uncorroborated internet hearsay so make of it what you will.

    Obama Will Hold Final Fundraiser

President Obama “will attend his last fundraiser of the 2012 campaign Thursday and then shift into top gear…” The Hill reports.
Sources say the president “will spend the rest of the campaign at swing-state rallies or preparing for the next two debates instead of attending more private fundraisers.”

Look, we’re not going to win the House. Obama’s first debate performance, rightly or not, screwed us out of that opportunity.

That said, we can win the White House, and we can hold the Senate. And then we can bully the motherfucking crap out of Orange Julius to get him to accept a substitution of the sequestration bill that actually makes some sense and isn’t diluted by the faintly sweaty, mildly hairy Teabagger flavor.

    Florida 3rd District

Yoho (Tea Party) vs. Gaillot (D)

    According to Yoho’s internals:

    Yoho – Gaillot – Dodds

    46.7% / 42.4% / 2.75%
    3% MOE

    This is a winnable race!

Cliff Stearns’ former district. Btw, people forget that a Dem with no money challenged Stearns and got over 40% of the vote during a presidential election year. The district boundaries have now been redrawn. Yoho is more of an extremist than Stearns (supposedly), but has money from his rich clients in Marion County.

Gaillot is a good moderate Democrat with a firm grasp on what Congress actually does and can achieve. This guy really needs our help. We can finally flip this district!

Are you seeing as many “Romney-Ryan” signs as I am? They’ve sprouted like fungi over the last two weeks.

Ballpark sign count from Western Maine: Romney – 50; Obama – 1.

I don’t put too much stock in signs, but still. I don’t like it. Makes me sad and mad, simultaneously.

I literally JUST got an update from the Gaillot campaign that the Republican Party is putting a cool million in the Florida 3 House race!

    What are they scared of?

If Dems think this is unwinnable, why do the Republicans think it’s losable?

Maybe because Yoho’s #s are sinking?

And Ted Yoho’s son was arrested for being drunk and disorderly and it’s all anyone’s talking about today in Alachua County?

I’ve heard both 200K and 500K ad buys on the R side tossed around.

Gaillot needs some more money to get the word out. Please help!

Heck, I wouldn’t be all that shocked if we managed to lose House seats this cycle.

Color me cynical, but I would be surprised if we have Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Round 2, in January 2013.

    @redshirt:

Oddly, in the northern suburbs of Atlanta (majorly conservative area), until the last couple of weeks the Obama bumper stickers were far outnumbering those for Romney. I’ve seen an upsurge in Romney stickers just in the past week of ten days maybe, but according to my completely unscientific research,t the good guys still have the lead.

Overall, though, I have to say there are WAY fewer bumper stickers of any persuasion this year than in previous Presidential election years.

@SiubhanDuinne: Bumper stickers are a different matter altogether. I’ve seen ZERO Romney bumper stickers. I’ve seen a smattering of anti-Obama stickers. I’ve seen plenty of Obama stickers – and it always makes me smile. So, in this medium, pro-Obama stickers far outweigh anti or Romney stickers, combined.

So I’ve been rationalizing – maybe OFA isn’t giving out/selling yard signs? Maybe the type of person who would put up a yard sign is far different than bumper sticker types, and far less numerous? I don’t know.

I agree with the “less bumper stickers overall” observation. Way less than 2008. I feel the difference.

Yard signs have been tough to get. They’ve invested in a lot of those paper signs that you can hold at a rally or stick in your window but the yard signs are only now showing up for 2012.

I never had an Obama/Biden bumper sticker, but I did have an Obama sticker left from the Texas primary in March 2008. We didn’t have that this time.
