Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

He really is that stupid.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

After roe, women are no longer free.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Everybody saw this coming.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

If Obama does in fact read Sullivan’s blog every day, he must be sitting in the Oval Office, shaking his head and thinking, “Chill the fuck out, white boy”.

I now understand why Andrew Sullivan doesn’t drive a car.

He’d be screaming, wetting his panties, and veering into a ditch the moment a grey haired lady started backing out of a driveway into light traffic on a clear day, 100 yards in front of him on a six-lane thoroughfare.

    What a flaming nitwit.

I said this earlier, I’ll say it again: I spent the weekend in Tasmania eating and drinking the lovely local produce, walking on hilltops and visiting historic sites. I only turned on the internet to ask for some inspiration in the garden thread (thanks!!!). I haven’t slept that well in months.

Go outside, breathe some air, hug your dog/cat/child/DVD collection and unplug for a couple of days. I promise the world won’t end.

Also too: you’ll be spared Andrew Sullivan’s view-from-jumping-out-your-window.

An entire thread dedicated to him. His ego didn’t need any help.

    In other news:

Mitt Romney isn’t have a good week with kids TV. First, he said he likes Big Bird but wants to cut funding for PBS during last week’s debate. Now, Nickelodeon says Romney declined an invitation to participate in their traditional “Kids Pick the President” election special, even though Barack Obama said yes.
    __
Nickelodeon has been running the specials for the past six elections and this is the first time a candidate has declined since John Kerry in 2004 (which prompted George W. Bush to cancel his planned appearance). Obama has already taped his responses to questions asked by kids to be included in the special.
    __
The cable network notes in a statement, “After numerous attempts by Nick News to get former Governor Mitt Romney to participate in the special, his camp declined, saying he was unable to fit it into his schedule.”

Romney can’t handle questions from kids. Lame. I like the President’s team’s response:

After learning of Romney’s decision, Obama’s team issued a statement: “It’s no surprise Romney decided to play hookey. Kids demand details, and I’m sure they want some answers on why Romney could increase their class sizes, eliminate their teacher’s jobs, raise taxes on their families and slash funding for Big Bird. Unfortunately for Mitt Romney, ‘The dog ate my homework’ just doesn’t cut it when you’re running for president.”

Oh, and this via Jonathan Bernstein: Pollster US popular vote estimate, now w/Pew poll included, +2 Obama (47.9-45.9).

So Sully’s mega-vapours are about one datapoint. One.

But then, we’ve known for a very long time that he can spin up into a tizzy with minimal provocation.

This freakout, though, really makes me think he’s never really been a conservative, or a Tory, or whatever Hayekian crapola he thinks he is. He’s far to defeato-crat/emotional ninny to be an actual principled conservative (and there aren’t any, that’s been the horrible joke all along…)

@Mark S.: He forgets that some of those people may be voters in four years if he were going up for re-election. Yes, the show targets young children, but I remember watching things like that as a teen to see how the candidates handles themselves and issues that were closer to my life experiences. I also had teachers who used the show in social studies classes because of the excellent production it was.

Sully is notoriously ready to get carried away.

On the other hand, I totally agreed with his play-by-play during the debate. It was catastrophic. Not so much what Barack said (or failed to say) but the optics and body language, especially the looking down. It was bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. I have real hope that the debate won’t be decisive in the big picture, but man alive, that night was fucking abysmal. Did the campaign not know that that shit was going to be on TV?

Does anybody know how the fuck the Daily Beast comments work? I tried to write something about that piece some guy named Buzz Bunkleyberger or something wrote about how he was a lifelong Democrat, but after he watched the debate, he’s going to vote for Romney now. It wouldn’t post what I wrote. I did write naughty words like “shit” and “ass”, but I even tried spelling them “šhít” and “aß” and it still wouldn’t post what I wrote. Does anybody else post there? Hasa anybody else had this happen?

In other, sadder, news, I buried my dog on Saturday. Dug the grave myself. Making her the last bed she’ll ever sleep in was the least I could do for her. It wasn’t any fun, but I think it helped in some small way. I went down to my mother’s house to do it, way out in the country, in a little spot where three of our other dogs are buried. I asked her minister if he would come by and give a little service for us, and he did, which also helped…

@The Dangerman: just decided to see what the latest state polls say… most of these are Rassmussen or We Ask America (both strong R house effects)

Obama leading in Colorado (1 in Rass, 4 in a U of Denver poll)
Romney leading in Florida (2 in Rass, 3 in WAA)
Obama leads in Iowa (2 in Rass)
Obama up one in Nevada (taken the day after the debate)
Romney up 4 in North Carolina (Rass, day of the debate)
Obama up one in Ohio (Rass)
Virginia appears to be tied (two polls WAA and Rass have Romney up, 1 and 3 respectfully, and PPP has Obama up 3)
Obama leads by 2 in Wisconsin (PPP)

So, pretty much nothing has changed from 10 days ago. Ohio is a little tighter than it was, otherwise toss ups are still toss ups

If Obama does, in fact, read Sullivan every day, I have a suggestion for the president…why not spend the time you waste reading Sullivan preparing for debates. Or, if you don’t want to do that, then at least do something productive with your time and take a nap — being rested is important.

I’m trying to think of a worse use of a president’s time than read Sullivan’s blog, and, off hand, I can’t come up with much that doesn’t involve overdoses of tainted narcotics or reading just about any right wing blog. Other than those, everything looks pretty good by comparison.

The last thing we needed was for Obama to reinforce the wingnut talking points that he is weak and deferential (ie apology tour). I don’t know how to debate someone who lies about everything, but the President really needs to go into the debate with a solid strategy.
