Nate Silver is now casting doubt on Obama’s chances…sigh. Whatever the reason for the change in the polls there is more to it than that one debate. Obama didn’t do nearly as bad as was sold to us by the MSM. If you want proof just look at how they are pretending Bidens performance was just a tie. I didn’t think Obama did all that bad and I think Biden did a heck of a lot better than they are saying.
But whatever is going on now with the polls is more than just that debate last week. Historically debates never change things this much and for this long so there is more going on and Obama doing well next debate probably isn’t going to change that unless the MSM sells it as loudly as they sold the supposed loss.

Considering these are the same motherfuckers who are fine with Romney and his family and campaign staff calling the President an obstinate child, I give precisely zero fucks if they bruise their palms from clutching their pearls so tightly over Biden’s “rudeness”.

Mitt’s campaign was touting an online CNBC poll which just after the debate showing Ryan won the debate. Soon after Dkos found that poll and it was soon a tie. I think this morning it was showing Biden winning the debate 49%-45%.

-Lizard blinking: Ryan
-Biker chick mojo: Biden
-Trapped ferret impression: Ryan
So, 3-3. Sure looks like a tie to me.

It’s funny how people who were stricken with terror after Mitt Romney laid the biggest smackdown on an incumbent president in a debate since Walter Mondale kicked Ronald Reagan’s ass in 1984 are now feeling reassured by the vice president laying the biggest smackdown on an opponent since Lloyd Bentsen kicked Dan Quayle’s ass in 1988.
The fundamentals of the race haven’t changed much in the past few weeks. The economy is improving, which benefits the incumbent, but rather sluggishly, which benefits his opponent.
The Republicans’ platform is toxic to to most women, ethnic minorities, and young people. Mitt Romney remains the most incompetent candidate in decades, and he picked a lousy running mate if his goal was to obscure how much he personally would benefit from his tax platform.
He remains behind in Ohio even after a week of relatively good press.

@Dexter: How in the world can you conclude it’s a convention bounce? That was weeks ago. However, not a debate bounce either. Debate was just a catalyst. I think the MSM over dramatizing the outcome did have a lot to do with it though. If it was just the debate performance it would be the first time in history it was of such magnitude and staying power. This is no ‘bounce’ unfortunately so anything Obama does next debate likely won’t change it.
Also, lets be honest. About the best Obama can hope for next debate is a tie. Like Biden, even if he knocks it out of the park the MSM will not give it to him and Rmoney is certainly not going to lie down and take it so Obama would have to do the impossible…basically.

@bondirotta: Obama will get no credit for it. Romney won’t either, not directly — but the need to adopt extraordinary measures to save the country while it’s plummeting down an elevator shaft (2008, electing the black guy) is weakening report by report.

Biden was Ryan’s daddy last night, and the daddy party knows it. They know weakness and they know wimpiness and they saw it from Ryan. He made the impossible happen–he made Sarah Palin look like a great debater.
Perhaps the daddy party will figure out that there’s a problem with nominating people who aren’t quite up to the standards and quit whining. They just can’t seem to keep it together for very long. And if someone were to argue that there’s a bit of buyer’s remorse for Ryan and a longing for the days of Dick Cheney, I would probably agree with that.

I think the one thing that Dems/Liberals/supporters of Obama/Biden should learn from this debate, is to just defend your guy even if you feel he was not at his best. You don’t have to lie and try to say anything that not true, but dang defend your guy. Don’t let the other side define the narrative after these events, ’cause those narratives stick. Obama in first debate lost on “style” and yet made no gaffes or told any outright lies at all. His demeanor is one thing, but he was on point on the substance. Now imagine for once is Obama’s supporters had started the debate spin as “yeah Obama wasn’t at his best, but his point on taxes/medicare/domestic/foreign policy were better on substance” and stuck with that spin the hold time, I’d bet we’d be looking at a still tight race, but nothing like the big bounce that Romney had afterwards. Instead, the Obama some of us kinda let the right set the narrative and even followed and added the narrative and had darn near a week long freakout over it and in many cases even used the RW’s usal deceptive Obama tropes (lazy, arrogrant, unprepared, etc).
All I’m saying is just think how the ensuing days after may have been different, if the collective “we” had just stuck to defending our guy.

It’s amazing to me how the low-info voters don’t seem to understand that Policy is, like, a thing. How the hell do these people go through life without choking to death on their own saliva?
Go ahead, turnips– elect Romney/Ryan on a feeling, and give them a GOP Congress while you’re at it: Then act all shocked as they start to enact the most radical changes to your day-to-day life since the 1930s. How’s that feel now?
But also, too, I still don’t get the long-term game that Romney and the GOP is playing. The usual reason to not TOTALLY lie during a Presidential election is that your party will get hammered in the following midterms when you turn out to not be the Guy They Voted For.
They might be able to grab a lot of power in a few weeks. But unless the GOP thinks it can somehow cancel (or broadly steal) the 2014 midterms, I’m not sure how they plan to keep it.

I volunteer in my daughter’s 5th/6th grade class; this morning their instructor was holding a little class discussion on the debate, asking the kids about their opinions. I heard several of them comment on “the old guy who kept laughing”. Not sure if that is really their 10/11-year-old perspective or something they heard Mom and Dad beefing about. Of course, I do live in a fairly rural section of northern California, so I’m not sure how representative this tiny sampling was this morning. The instructor — cheeky old monkey! — suggested that some of the laughter may have had something to do with some of the silly comments made during the debate. (What conclusions the students will draw from this observation is unclear, but I’m glad she didn’t just let the “old guy was mean” observation go unchecked.

Jesus Christ. Just stop. Looks like in his best week of the campaign, Romney is up by maybe one point nationally. And Romney probably picked up a couple points in Ohio… putting Obama up by about 4-6 points still. It’s closer. Certainly. But Colorado, Virginia and Florida going for Romney still equals… an Obama win. A dead heat nationally and a strong lead in the only place that matters is still the greater position to be in. Obama’s position is still much stronger than Romney’s, but not the landslide dominance it once was. Frankly, I’m looking at the RV numbers too. Right now the LV is getting hammered b/c of the narrative. I fully expect things to shake out somewhere between where the RV and LV is. All those polls right now, in this environment, are telling us that this year is going to be 2010 in party turnout. I think it will end up somewhere between 2008 and 2010. This IS a bounce. It’s been a solid week of terrible media, hence a solid week of terrible polling. There was no reason to think that the Romney surge would abate as long as the debate is all anyone in the country was talking about. That story WILL be gone this Tuesday.
But for me, the real ace in the hole is final jobs report. Gallup’s unemployment tracker is down to 7.3. It’s been very near the BLS throughout. Let that sink in. The final jobs report is going to show even more improvement.
