Slightly clearing skies over at Nate’s 538. Isn’t funny how we haven’t heard anything from our GOP friends and trolls about how the polls are skewed in the past week?
I suspect if things turn hard to port in Obama’s favor next week, that meme will be brought back from the dead rather quickly.
Xecky Gilchrist
Oh, I like that song! I heard it in the Wreck-it Ralph trailer. So I’m not a totally out-of-touch old bastid.

I still can’t believe Willard is trying to blame Obama for Bain sending jobs to China.

The World aired a good piece on the Cuba Missile Crisis yesterday. (The 50th anniversary starts on the 16th.) It turns out the episode was even crazier than anyone realized at the time – for a few months, Khrushchev considered giving Cuba the tactical nukes the Soviets left behind after agreeing with Kennedy to pull all the nukes out.
For emotional balance: interspecies snorgling.
zzyzx
@Hill Dweller: Wait what!? I can’t even tell if that’s snark anymore.

For those, who give a shite about the real ‘polls’.
Early voting in Iowa:
206,363 votes cast.
53.3% Democrats.
27.8% Thugs
18.9% None/Others

Too late for the football thread…
…but who scheduled WVU to travel to Texas 2 consecutive weekends? If we can prove it was Romney, can we flip West Virginia (I dream big).
Seriously, major scheduling error. Next thing you know, people will schedule to move a former space shuttle through downtown LA on a Saturday night (if you’re not in the LA market, it’s turning into a monster headache – no less than 5 hours behind schedule – and, figure people waiting and, since it’s Saturday, drinking, and, well, I just hope everyone plays well with others down there).

@magurakurin: meh. nate himself seems confused of late. seems unable to ‘reconcile’ with the ground reality. his words.

Xecky Gilchrist
@anibundel: No guilt. I’ve only heard the one song of theirs, but I dig it.
I like a lot of what I hear from the youngins these days. I’m coming to appreciate how Autotune has become an instrument and people are finding cool things to do with it.
Hill Dweller
@zzyzx: Not snark.
Bain owns a company called Sensata, but they’re outsourcing the jobs to China. Bain is also making the current workers train their Chinese replacements.
It’s starting to get some national attention. Willard’s spokes-douche released a statement saying it was Obama’s fault.
raven
@PsiFighter37: Damn, you sound sober. You ok?

Our cable box has decided to shit the bed, and Cox, who normally has excellent customer service, can’t get someone out until tomorrow. So we’ve been watching The Walking Dead on Netflix.

@raven:
I’m guessing that roughly translates to “Oops, my bad”.
Joining a conference that makes no geographic sense is one thing; flying to Texas two consecutive weekends is brain dead.

Okay, so now I’ve moved from the Bush v Gore town hall to McCain Obama. It is fascinating to watch it with 20/20 hindsight. Obama did a good job and actually telegraphed pretty accurately what he wanted to do: 1) energy (stimulus) and 2) health care. It isn’t a very confrontational format. The candidates really make a point of talking to the questioner in the audience. Notably, McCain repeatedly called for the government to buy up underwater mortgages (I didn’t remember that). The moderator was Tom Brokaw who kept complaining that the candidates were violating their own rules by going over the time limits. I just paused it now when Brokaw pitched a follow up question about what “sacrifices” Americans have to make. Ugh! The villagers never give up!
raven
@The Dangerman: Xin Loi means “sorry about that shit” in Vietnamese.
XIN LOI :
(sin loy) a polite Vietnamese phrase literally meaning “excuse me” or “pardon me”, but used sardonically by GIs to mean “sorry about that”, “too damn bad”, or “tough shit”; sometimes misspelled “sin loi” or “xoine loi”. Compare MEA CULPA, A-OK, CHECK IT OUT, GUSTO, FIDO, SHIT HAPPENS, ROTS O’ RUCK, AMF, ZIP, ZAP. [nb: various phrases have been used by 20th century combatants for protective disassociation from epiphenomena, including: “There it is.”, “It’s all just rock ‘n’ roll.”, “It don’t mean nuthin’.”, “It ain’t nuthin’.”, “It’s just a thing.”; the latter appears in “The Rescue” by Joseph Conrad (1920)] [v: sumimasen at ITTY-WA DESKA]

@amk: Maybe that’s because about a gazillion rightwing polls came out right after the first debate and it has sort of overwhelmed his model. Yes, I’m exaggerating, but I was struck by the number of polls by firms I’d rarely heard from all dropping polls right after the debate. And even polls by reputable firms had lots of odd demographic quirks. Yes, that’s playing the unskewing game to a certain extent, but under the assumption that everything conservatives ever say is projection….

@Hill Dweller: Did they try to make any sort of coherent argument to explain that?

I can’t believe folks don’t recognize Magneto’s contributions towards defusing the Cuban Missle Crisis. Wake up, Sheeple! Mutant Power!

@Joy: If I recall correctly, there is a point in that debate, after McCain has been calling Obama naive or reckless, when Obama says I’m not the one that was singing about bombing Iran. McCain looked like he wanted to stab him.

@zzyzx: The spokes-douche said the government owns part of GM, which is a Sensata customer, and Obama’s pension plan invests in the company, so Obama should have stopped Bain(a private company) from shipping the jobs to China. It’s laughable.

Add me to having been introduced to that (truly awesome) song through the Wreck-It Ralph trailer.
Though I honestly thought a better song for Ralph would be the Dream Academy’s Power to Believe, the instrumental of which was heard briefly in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. It’s a powerful song about someone giving up a life of privilege in order to seek Truth.
He did try hard, god forbid he should
give in to pointless wandering
but he would wander from time to time
seeking guidance from the holy
he tried to find the truth
among the radical revolutionaries
who canonized his youth
and gathering strength from the feeling that
to believe could undoubtedly change the world…

@Xecky Gilchrist: Exactly. It’s one thing when some no-talent assclown uses autotune for the entire song because they can’t hit ANY notes without it. But if you listen to some of the band’s acoustic stuff on YouTube, you can see that he’s got a great voice. They were just using a smidge of autotune on that one section of that one song, for effect.

@raven:
I have to admit, I am very conflicted about the baseball this October. I’ve lived in Japan since the Monica Day’s of the Clinton Administration, and I really like Ichiro alot. I’d really like to see him get a World Series ring. I’m sure he picked the Yankees because in Japan the Yankees are the most famous and iconic MLB team in Japan.
But I hate the damn Yankees. I grew up in the Philly area, and saying that you like a New York team was only slightly less dangerous on the school ground than admitting you like the Dallas Cowboys.
So, I actually want the Yankees to win, and I’m trying to cheer for them, but….the performances of the “stars” Jeter and A-Rod are making it extremely difficult to cheer for these guys.
For fuck’s sake, earn your goddamn millions and get a fucking hit. Ichiro is doing his job, now do yours. you prima donna assholes.
raven
@magurakurin: I hate the Cards but that game last night was amazing.
Joy
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: That is good, although it is a different debate than the townhall one that I am watching. This townhall is interesting because I remember during the ACA saga people complained that Obama hadn’t made healthcare reform a centerpiece of his campaign–it is one of the most talked about topics in this debate! That and green energy. I’m currently reading “The New New Deal” so I am acutely aware of how much green energy he got into the stimulus. Perhaps that is why watching this I am struck by how much he did exactly what he said he would do! I too am feeling much better about Tuesday after watching this!

@RedKitten: I’ve now gone through and sampled several of the Fun. songs on YouTube – indeed, that guy can sing.
My comment about Autotune was poorly presented; I did notice that Some Nights didn’t use it much, but I got thinking of it and commented on it in general. You’re right about it. Used as a crutch it’s not something I approve of, but as a technique for creating a new sound, I like it a lot.
