Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Consistently wrong since 2002

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

We are aware of all internet traditions.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attempted to take responsibility for the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 in a series of interviews on Monday.

Speaking with reporters, she said the blame should rest with her office.

“I take responsibility” for what happened on September 11, Clinton told CNN after arriving in Lima, Peru, for a visit. Clinton gave several interviews to U.S. television networks Monday night, and it was the first private response she has given about the attack on the U.S. Consulate in eastern Libya.

Perhaps numbers really DON’T tell the full story…

(I also love that the “boy-lovers and philosophers” of Athens crushed the Persians while the badass warriors of Sparta got crushed themselves. Seriously, the story of “300” is “Warrior Society spends entire life dedicating itself to war, then loses.” Gotta love that).

    @Higgs Boson’s Mate:

Some of the historical reading I’ve done included contemporary descriptions of how the Spartans lived day-to-day, how they raised their offspring, and how they governed themselves. I came away wondering why only 300 of them wanted to commit suicide at Thermopylae.

The wonder of Warrior Societies is that for all that warmongering, they’re not actually that much more militarily efficient when push comes to shove. The Spartans got their ass handed to them in the Persian Wars, did better against Athens in the Peloponesian Wars but were beaten by Thebes shortly thereafter. And the Assyrians got their asses kicked by Babylon.

Personal theory: a culture that spends all its time and energy obsessing about war is a culture that doesn’t spend any time and energy thinking about anything else, which makes them vulnerable to anyone with a slightly more diverse skillset.

(E.G. the South investing in Officer-Gentlemen, versus the North investing in factories. War comes along, and wouldn’t you know it…)

    @Elmo:

    Oh, come on.

You know all those Super Bowls the Chargers haven’t won with Philip Rivers at QB? They wouldn’t have won them if they’d had Eli.

You want a QB who was taught by David Cutcliffe? You’ll have two chances to draft one in the next three years.

When Sean Renfree is drafted in the third round next April, fans who don’t know as much as they think they know will say “Sean who?” And then when his team beats their team like a drum for 12 years, they’ll get all pissed at their GM for not having the foresight to draft him.

On the other hand, by the day of the 2015 draft, everybody will know who Anthony Boone is.

Yawn. I sure as fuck hope this was some kind of twisted satire. But knowing you it’s more likely you were seriously predicting these outcomes.

What do you mean? Aren’t all Navy enlistees basically one umbrella in their drink away from being this kind of rabidly gay?

B-b-but they had two coed midshipmen in that one shot and they didn’t look like ravening lesbian feminist terrorists from a 1980s post-apocalyptic East Berlin underground comic.

@Cacti: I enjoyed the revisionist history that pretended the Spartan military wasn’t built on a culture of pederasty.

I enjoy conservative academics tying themselves in knots trying to tell us that Hellenic pederasty is not every bit as silly, if not moreso, than certain tribes in Papua New Guinea’s firm fixed belief that pre-adolescent males must fellate grown men to “acquire the seed” and complete their sexual development.

Even more, I enjoy the ancient Greeks’ attempts to tell us so. Exhibit A: the Symposium.

They played it at an event I was at on Saturday night — I think it’s more like this year’s “Macarena.” I had to stream the video to my phone to show some co-workers who had no idea why people were prancing around the dance floor like they were riding horses.

This post and comment thread are epic. And I’m assuming that the only reason Sarah PT hasn’t weighed in yet is because as soon as she saw this video she hopped a plane to Annapolis to, well, invite these delightful young gentlemen to, ahem, tea.
