I’ll make you all a deal: Help me help get Darrell Issa out of office before he endangers more lives. Jerry Tetalman’s war chest isn’t one tenth Issa’s is but we can make a difference.
Downpuppy
So I’m wondering : Where would you hang a personal letter of apology from Linda Katehi for having you chemically assaulted?

In Republican-controlled legislatures in statehouses across the country, more than 1,100 anti-abortion provisions were introduced in 2011. Seven states either fully defunded or made moves toward defunding Planned Parenthood, which provides basic health care, contraception and cancer screenings to millions of women each year.
Then there’s the invasive trans-vaginal ultrasound mandates, personhood amendments, redefining rape, countless anti-contraception measures, attempts to end Title X and proposals to let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.
Then there’s the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. The landmark measure had broad bipartisan support when it was created in 1994, and when it was reauthorized in 2000 and 2005. But in February, every Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to oppose it.
There’s no reason to believe that Republicans won’t continue their war on women when the election is over. The next two weeks is just a period for them be on the down-low.

Funniest thing this last week was watching my mother catch sight of the backwards hat bicep boy shot in the back of a Colbert clip and burst out “WHAT was That!” and then get to explain it to her. Much google image searching immedietely followed on her part to a contant muttering of “What were they thinking.” and “Who’s bright idea was that?” and general incredulity.
Redshift
@scav: And the icing on the cake was that it was for Time Magazine. If it was a bizarre attempt for a Republican to appeal to young voters where (for once) “young” is actually defined as less than forty, then there might be a shred of an excuse for it. But that’s not exactly Time’s demographic.
Redshift
Off to do some canvassing!
scav
@Redshift: To add the sprinkles to the icing, me mudder would gleefully stomp on the ryan if he would ever be so foolish as to get within stomping distance and with her new knee, that’s a little further than it once was. good luck with your canvassing and deniming and what not!

Worth a look…

shortstop
@scav: I can’t get my otherwise sensible and sophisticated mom to stop subscribing to TIME magazine. With this, she vows she’s learned her lesson at last.
Dee Loralei
My mom just told me a bit of political data she learned from ESPN’s Game Day. According to Chuck Todd, per ESPN, in Presidential election years if Florida State wins over Miami, the Dem candidate for President wins. If Miami wins, then the Rep does.
I told her that stat was only true, until it wasn’t, but that I would be rooting for the Seminoles and my beloved Sooners tonight!
jeffreyw
Yay!
Yutsano
@jeffreyw: That mantis is just fabulous dahling!
MikeJ
@Dee Loralei: Pointed out here the other day: http://xkcd.com/1122/
No white guy who has ever been mentioned on twitter has ever won the presidency.
Alison
@jeffreyw: That mantis is giving precisely zero fucks today. I love it.

The Ryan workout pics are strange for someone trying to obtain the office of VP of the US. Very strange.

Daniel Ellsberg agrees with Cornel West…http://consortiumnews.com/2012/10/18/ellsberg-warns-of-a-romney-victory/
My answer was: a Romney/Ryan administration would be no better â no different â on any of the serious offenses I just mentioned or anything else, and it would be much worse, even catastrophically worse, on a number of other important issues: attacking Iran, Supreme Court appointments, the economy, womenâs reproductive rights, health coverage, safety net, climate change, green energy, the environment.
Davis X. Machina
@Ben Franklin: Daniel Ellsberg and Cornell West aren’t real progressives, though. You can tell. Their complete indifference to the importance of sending a message is the tip-off.
the Conster
@Ben Franklin:
Such sharp insight! I’m amazed no one has made that argument here yet/

Total Off Topic (if that’s possible in an open thread), but it just made me laugh under the “sometimes you dodge a bullet and don’t even realize it” category. I auditioned for a play a month or so ago- didn’t book it, which was no big deal, but while at the audition ran into several friends I haven’t seen for awhile, which is always nice.
Anyway, one of the friends I saw there just sent me a link on FB- the show was cancelled because, the day before it opened, BEDBUGS were discovered backstage at the theater, and several members of the cast were bitten.
I feel really bad for the theater company (they don’t own the space) and for the actors, but laughing because how often is a person so profoundly grateful to NOT land a job? If any of the actors took bedbugs home with them, it may end up being the most expensive show the actors have ever done… for the actors.
arguingwithsignposts
@MikeJ: This is not actually true. People mention past presidents all the time.
arguingwithsignposts
@Ben Franklin: Well, I guess it’s safe for me to vote for Obama!
Yutsano
@arguingwithsignposts: Don’t give in! Send the message! VOTE JILL STEIN 2012!!
Ben Franklin
@Davis X. Machina:
You can be pragmatic, while being progressive. Giraffes see a lot more of the horizon with their heads up.
Ben Franklin
@Yutsano:
Cash in that stellar wit and send a dollar to Issa’s opponent.

Chris
@Ben Franklin:
This.
I read a left-wing post on my facebook feed a few weeks back that argued “look, if both candidates endorsed slavery and stoning adulterers, you wouldn’t vote for one of them just because he had the better position on health care.” My response: “Yes. I would. Because a country that practices slavery, stones adulterers and doesn’t let its people die in the streets for lack of health care, is still better than a country that practices slavery, stones adulterers AND lets its people die in the street for lack of health care.”
I have no idea why that’s so damn hard to process.
Yutsano
@Chris: You could also tell them that country exists. It’s called Afghanistan.
Forum Transmitted Disease
@jurassicpork: Mighty generous of you. Think I’ll cut out the middleman.
Tetalman For Congress
The race is kind of a big deal for me personally as I’ve been gerrymandered into the fuckers district, and I’d rather fund Tetalman wholly rather than give half so that you can continue to bash Democrats and Obama, and whatever else you do.
Your site has some…interesting posts.
Smedley the Uncertain
@Yutsano: Yes! Vote for Jill and elect a Republican.
