What’s your favorite “working for the weekend”, glad-the-work-week’s-over type song?
I’ll go with “All Down The Line” (I watch the live version at the link at least once a week) and “Remix To Ignition“. I know the latter is dumb and that R Kelly is a pervert, but I still like it.
Also talk about whatever you like and don’t forget to tip the metrosexual Kenyan usurper.
Stormy Monday, specially the Allmans,
They Eagle Flies on Friday. . .
Considering I’m working this weekend it would be Take This Job and Shove It.
NYT just reporting that Obama has used an executive order to create a non-profit public option. Can Kathleen Sibelius run for president?

Another Saturday Night (and I ain’t got no money)?
Nah. Can’t really think of a better one off the top of the head.

I find this passage on point:
“Funny thing about weekends when you’re unemployed.
They don’t quite mean so much,
Except you get to hang out with all your working friends.”
I would add that weekends for the unemployed is actually two days off from the barrage of boilerplate rejection emails so maybe they mean more than Les and the boys knew.
@Poopyman: Ah yes, I have that DVD!
If you are quitting can I have your job?
Does it come with dental? I haven’t had a full check up in years.

Not sure this quite fits the criteria, but there’s something about “Sunday Morning Coming Down.”
Can’t decide whether Kristofferson or Cash feels right at the moment, so here’s a duet.
OT, anyone hear any reports on RB Lattimore? Know he’s in the hospital and looks like a knee; maybe he’ll catch a bit of fortune and he only broke his leg (IANAD, but that would appear to be better than the present likelihood).
Hope he had a damn good insurance policy.
@The Dangerman: Much as I hate Spurrier it is too bad. Sounded as if it might be compound the way they kept him from looking at it.

“When he went down, replays showed what clearly looked like a dislocation in his leg. It was a terrible injury that will be remembered alongside Joe Theismann, Napoleon McCallum, Tyrone Prothro and many other grisly injuries that serve as a reminder how violent football can be.”
I shattered my left leg falling out of a tree after football practice in 8th grade. 18 bone fragments, they said I might never walk. Four years later it didn’t keep me out of the Army.

The original, of course! Loverboy’s “Working for the Weekend”
Lame as fuck but it gets right to the point.
I saw it live; once was enough. I instantly thought of McCallum, which I also saw live. Shit, I may have seen Theisman live, too (read: old fart). McCallum’s was the worst, however.
Democrat Partisan Asshole
@The Dangerman: No, but I steeled my stomach and watched it. I wouldn’t recommend it. It looked worse than Theismann’s dogleg and that’s really saying something. They’ll probably be able to get him walking someday but he won’t be playing sports any more.
I think Mino is talking about this.
Does “(I want to take you to a) Gay Bar” count?
Something to send your gooper facebook/twitter/email friends:

DougJ, just for fun, I have a question for the BJ community, in reference to your reference to Obama as the Metrosexual Kenyan Usurper or whatever: If it WERE to be revealed that PBO in fact WAS born in Kenya, what would be the consensus reaction of the Balloon Juice Kool Kids?
Please ask your devotees to chime in.
@Baud: Not quite. One is to be non-profit.
@Spatula: Chime. You are nuts.
@Democrat Partisan Asshole: I heard that every Friday for YEARS. It’s embedded now.
Will probably survive a couple of future lives, too.

If he were born in Kenya and he wasn’t otherwise a natural born citizen through his mother (I don’t know the details here), I believe the birthers would be correct in saying he would be ineligible to be president.*
*Caveat: Don’t know if that’s enforceable through ballot access (in which case it’s too late) or through some procedure for removal.
I believe one has to be non-profit under the health reform statute.
OK, I think you win with the MB Senior.
What really sucks is I’ve long since gotten used to thinking “damn it, I think I saw his father play” and now it’s “fuck all, I think I watched his grandfather play”.
That could be *any* night of the week, now couldn’t it?
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
That’s the song I want played at my funeral.
@Baud: At this point he would have to be impeached. And no it does not nullify all the laws he’s signed, fevered imaginings of the wingnuts notwithstanding.
Yeah, I remember Theismann and LT. It was so cringe-inducing (for me – OK, I’m a wimp), that I couldn’t watch that part of “The Blind Side.”
Marion Barber Sr.? Damn, you ARE old. SHOULD I TYPE LOUDER, SO YOU CAN HEAR ME?
@Baud: You think he’s using an executive order just for the drama of it.
@Santiago: Ahh! Thanks. Your link doesn’t work:-(
@Raven: I just said a bad word to charter school Autumn and Theismann is our age.. Now I don’t feel so old.
The consensus would be that as he was born to an American mother, he is still a natural-born American citizen and therefore eligible to run for office.
You know, like John McCain, that presidential candidate in 2008 who was ACTUALLY born outside the U.S. of A, but was still eligible to run and never had to put up with any of that shit.
@The Dangerman: Actually I have to amend that, it was Marion Barber Jr, Marion Barber III is the guy who both ran out of bounds and then fumbled to give Tebow a win against the Bears.
Here is the statutory text of Obamacare re: the national non-profit provider:
Hokay then. We’ll mark you down as stupid.
No mention of Rebecca Black?
Fixed, to reflect the appropriate grip of facts and on reality.
Where did you read about an executive order? I didn’t see it in the NYT article.
@Baud: Yeah–been part of ACA; I guess it is being implemented soon–hence the excitement?

Earth Quake – Friday on My Mind These guys did the most unleashed version of this rocker.
Back in the day, anyone within earshot of WMMS knew it was the weekend when this song came on at 5pm on Friday, well that and “Born to Run” and “Cleveland Rocks.”
Thank you for a reasonable, non abusive answer. But I’m really trying to get at what the BJ community reaction would be? Would you want him to resign? Should he resign? Fight it in court?
Myself, I’d wish he would just say “fuck y’all” and fight it in court until his term expired anyway. I don’t really care where he was born as far as eligibility goes. GWB was mentally incompetent, as was Ronald Reagan, and they were allowed to serve, so why not a technical furiner with some intelligence?
@Baud: I think the EO is necessary because the plan will be executed under OPM…”The plans will be arranged by the United States Office of Personnel Management, which oversees the excellent health care plans for federal employees.” That is not part of ACA.
GOS has a diary on the rec list with questions and answers.
I am a big football fan, but the sport is far from gore-free. Look away from the screen like I do.

Why would he resign? Even spotting you the demonstrably counterfactual proposition of Obama having been born somewhere other than Hawaii, his mother was a U.S. citizen. Therefore, he is a U.S. citizen. Just like John McCain is a U.S. citizen even though he was born in Panama to an American mother.
Adding: What’s the “it” that you think he would “fight in court”?
@Baud: No, I was wrong about the OPM not being named in the ACA. I dunno why then. Guess I’ll wait on events. Sorry for the misstatement.
@Baud: Actually, at that point we would need to go to the laws on citizenship from 1961 to see what the effect of having being born overseas to with one citizen and one non-citizen parent happens to be. I know the birthers have seized on some language from the statutes of the period saying that the citizen parent had to have been a citizen for x (2 or 3) years following his or her 18th birthday in order to pass on natural born citizen status, but I believe the consensus of legal scholars who have looked into the matter was that the clause in question does not apply to a lifelong citizen. If that consensus is indeed correct, Obama would have no eligibility issues. If it is incorrect, the one would have to figure it out.
@efgoldman: I also was not trying to get out. RA.
@Joel: No. Until now, you bastard.
There are legal issues due to the young age of his mother and the number of years she spent out of the U.S. in the years prior to his birth?
But that doesn’t really matter pertaining to my question, the focus of which is how would the BJ community react to definitive evidence that he was NOT technically a U.S. citizen.
@efgoldman: @The Dangerman: @Raven: Fuck it. All y’all are old. Happy now?
You’ve been watching that laughable youtube video haven’t you?
@Chris: The consensus would be that as he was born to an American mother, he is still a natural-born American citizen and therefore eligible to run for office. You know, like John McCain, that presidential candidate in 2008 who was ACTUALLY born outside the U.S. of A, but was still eligible to run and never had to put up with any of that shit.
The trick is, is that earlier, at the time McCain was born, children born outside of the United States to two American citizens were considered ‘natural-born’ by act of Congress. Both his parents were citizens and he was born on base (an American extraterritoriality anyways). So that took care of that lawsuit against his campaign.
Obama was born just a bit before the law was changed (a few days if I remember correctly from my research) – but it didn’t matter because Hawaii is American soil. If he were born in Kenya to one American parent, then legally he wouldn’t be a citizen if he wasn’t enrolled as a citizen (which he was) before his 18th birthday. Potentially, in that instance, he would not be a *natural-born* citizen. Except that Congress changed the law to make it so that any child born outside the US to ONE American citizen was automatically an American citizen (and thus *natural-born*). That’s the way the law reads now.
So what would have to happen is that we would have to go back and say that the law as it was at the time applies, that minority enrollment of Obama as a citizen didn’t count as being ‘natural-born’ and then we would have to do something about it. There’s no existing provision to deal with it, the issue has already been adjudicated, and he was accepted as natural-born.
So what would have to occur would be for Congress to impeach him for falsified birth record (not a ‘high crime and misdemeanor’ in any sense) – for a crime he himself did not commit.
Given that he’s a citizen either way, and the error would occur due solely to a change in the law a few days (I think it was a few days – no more than a year) after he was born, I would totally say, WALK IT THE FUCK OFF ALREADY. Also SHEESHERS.
[‘Some things never die.’]
Not a weekend song, but a local radio station used to play “Memphis Thing”‘ by Rob Jungklas every Friday around 5 pm. It’s my default go to Friday night is here, time to party song. It’s on Youtube if anyone wants to listen. I used to have it on vinyl, wonder what I did with it.
Well, that’s not the same as what you wrote…technically.
I’m right there with you on the nap. I was trying to think of the earliest FB game I can ever recall and I’m pretty sure it’s the Heidi game. I vaguely recall my Granddad, a monster sports junkie (apples don’t fall far, etc.), being apoplectic.
@Dee Loralei: A Tom Prestigiacomo listener?
@Spatula: Dude, if he is not a natural born citizen, he would not be eligible to be president. Now the fun thing for you, is you get to say that an O-bot, Dear Leader follower like me can feel comfortable saying that now because there is definitive evidence that he was born in the US so none of it fucking matters, but, if he wasn’t a natural born citizen I would probably find some excuse to support him anyway. Here is the thing though, if he wasn’t eligible, I am fully confident that Hillary Clinton would have found the evidence and used it. She would have been the nominee in 2008 and I would have voted for her. After she won, you would have been here carping that she got her start in politics due to her husband and most of us just voted for her because she had a vagina. Counterfactuals are fun.
Saw Dylan/ Knopfler last night at Hollywood Bowl.
Dylan’s arrangements overrode his vocals..still the man at 72….
Knopfler stole the show though.
His Celtic ballad/ Rock fusion was amazing.
Ifn you say so…
@Litlebritdifrnt: It’s just juicy birfer goodness from Special Timmeh. Because, well, he is the final arbiter of DA TROOF!!
Co-headliners? I’m surprised Knopfler is an opener for anyone.
Dire Straights was a damned fine band, but Knopfler solo is brilliant.
He took just one curtain call, and no Sultan of Swing, alas. But he has become the UK’s Springsteen.
@Ben Franklin: They are playing Madison the night before the election. I want to go, but work is going to keep me away. Stupid work. ::mutter::
Oscar Brown Jr., “Hymn to Friday.”
Probably too late to catch many eyes, but very exciting finish in the men’s master’s ultimate frisbee championships in Sarasota. . Go Boneyard!
Work is overrated.
OT, but I’m in Miami this weekend and just saw a TV ad from Randall Terry, who is apparently a candidate for Congress somewhere down here.
It featured Norma McCorvey, the now-repentant Jane Roe of Roe v Wade, and graphic images of aborted fetuses (so graphic that the station prefaced it with a warning) and then her saying “vote against Obama this year because he is a baby killer.”
I would have loved to seen the show.
@Ben Franklin: Sure, but paychecks aren’t. Also too, my work involves the election so it is rather unavoidable.
Robbie Fulks, “Let’s Kill Saturday Night.”
Christ, you are a sad, sad little man.
What’s it like knowing you’re going to die alone and unloved?

Excellent goalpoast moving, dick.
After study, the only new wrinkle in this information that I see is that citizens of any state could be enrolled in the “national plan” instead of being restricted to plans in their state exchanges.
Just got back from the gym. I am going every day between now and election day, wearing my Obama t-shirt.
Stopped at the store on the way back and just wearing the shirt opened up a conversation with the 2 fellows at the register. One asked if I thought Obama had a chance — so they obviously believe the “Mitt is ahead crap”. They are both going to vote, and this gave me an opportunity to also tell them to vote NO on the constitutional amendment in IL.
They word the amendment like it’s a good thing, but if you vote yes, it means the state of IL will no longer have to honor the pension and health care, not just going forward, but even for retirees. Boom just like that, and they can take it all away.
@MikeJ: actually I think it was Rock103, not FM100 that played it. But yea, I liked him too.
“workin for the weekend” triggers Swayze and Farley Chippendale sketch memories. I miss those guys.

This one’s not even close.
The all-time greatest “here comes the weekend” song is…
Here Comes the Weekend
by Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe and Rockpile
@PopeRatzo: I’ve got that on the Dave Edmunds solo album Get It, and it’s not on Seconds of Pleasure. I’m pretty sure it’s not “officially” a Rockpile cut, although Lowe & Williams played on the album.
We could throw in Down in the Dive by Brinsley Schwarz from The New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz which is a good “hanging out in a dave bar tune.
Hey, I think he’s a dipshit, too, but there was no need for that.
Johnny Kemp “Just Got Paid”
Basically anything by Korpiklaani.
@SFAW: Yea, just add the duders to the troll filter. I did.
“Living for the Weekend” The O’Jays
Anyone see this, from Krugman?
“…several people I know well have had their Obama/Biden signs stolen…”
Time for some camera planting, & subsequent YouTubing, no?
@MikeJ: hah yea I remember those!
So…that’s one more respondent marked down as “stupid.”
Projection as a means of relating to your environment is not a successful strategy for life, dumpling.
Time to change to change your depends.
@Bruuuuce: Back way late, but I gotta thank you for reminding me of that. I used to love that song. Still do, I guess.
Out in the Streets – Springsteeen
On Monday when the foreman calls time, I’ve got Friday on my mind
