Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

I really should read my own blog.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

The willow is too close to the house.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Come on, man.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Working for the weekend

What’s your favorite “working for the weekend”, glad-the-work-week’s-over type song?

I’ll go with “All Down The Line” (I watch the live version at the link at least once a week) and “Remix To Ignition“. I know the latter is dumb and that R Kelly is a pervert, but I still like it.

Also talk about whatever you like and don’t forget to tip the metrosexual Kenyan usurper.

I find this passage on point:

“Funny thing about weekends when you’re unemployed.
They don’t quite mean so much,
Except you get to hang out with all your working friends.”

I would add that weekends for the unemployed is actually two days off from the barrage of boilerplate rejection emails so maybe they mean more than Les and the boys knew.

I think Mino is talking about this.

The Obama administration will soon take on a new role as the sponsor of at least two nationwide health insurance plans to be operated under contract with the federal government and offered to consumers in every state.
    __

…as a substitute for a pure government-run health insurance program — the public option sought by many liberal Democrats and reviled by Republicans. Supporters of the national plans say they will increase competition in state health insurance markets, many of which are dominated by a handful of companies.

Why would he resign? Even spotting you the demonstrably counterfactual proposition of Obama having been born somewhere other than Hawaii, his mother was a U.S. citizen. Therefore, he is a U.S. citizen. Just like John McCain is a U.S. citizen even though he was born in Panama to an American mother.

@Baud: Actually, at that point we would need to go to the laws on citizenship from 1961 to see what the effect of having being born overseas to with one citizen and one non-citizen parent happens to be. I know the birthers have seized on some language from the statutes of the period saying that the citizen parent had to have been a citizen for x (2 or 3) years following his or her 18th birthday in order to pass on natural born citizen status, but I believe the consensus of legal scholars who have looked into the matter was that the clause in question does not apply to a lifelong citizen. If that consensus is indeed correct, Obama would have no eligibility issues. If it is incorrect, the one would have to figure it out.

What’s the “it” that you think he would “fight in court”?

There are legal issues due to the young age of his mother and the number of years she spent out of the U.S. in the years prior to his birth?

But that doesn’t really matter pertaining to my question, the focus of which is how would the BJ community react to definitive evidence that he was NOT technically a U.S. citizen.

@Chris: The consensus would be that as he was born to an American mother, he is still a natural-born American citizen and therefore eligible to run for office. You know, like John McCain, that presidential candidate in 2008 who was ACTUALLY born outside the U.S. of A, but was still eligible to run and never had to put up with any of that shit.

The trick is, is that earlier, at the time McCain was born, children born outside of the United States to two American citizens were considered ‘natural-born’ by act of Congress. Both his parents were citizens and he was born on base (an American extraterritoriality anyways). So that took care of that lawsuit against his campaign.

Obama was born just a bit before the law was changed (a few days if I remember correctly from my research) – but it didn’t matter because Hawaii is American soil. If he were born in Kenya to one American parent, then legally he wouldn’t be a citizen if he wasn’t enrolled as a citizen (which he was) before his 18th birthday. Potentially, in that instance, he would not be a *natural-born* citizen. Except that Congress changed the law to make it so that any child born outside the US to ONE American citizen was automatically an American citizen (and thus *natural-born*). That’s the way the law reads now.

So what would have to happen is that we would have to go back and say that the law as it was at the time applies, that minority enrollment of Obama as a citizen didn’t count as being ‘natural-born’ and then we would have to do something about it. There’s no existing provision to deal with it, the issue has already been adjudicated, and he was accepted as natural-born.

So what would have to occur would be for Congress to impeach him for falsified birth record (not a ‘high crime and misdemeanor’ in any sense) – for a crime he himself did not commit.

Given that he’s a citizen either way, and the error would occur due solely to a change in the law a few days (I think it was a few days – no more than a year) after he was born, I would totally say, WALK IT THE FUCK OFF ALREADY. Also SHEESHERS.

@Spatula: Dude, if he is not a natural born citizen, he would not be eligible to be president. Now the fun thing for you, is you get to say that an O-bot, Dear Leader follower like me can feel comfortable saying that now because there is definitive evidence that he was born in the US so none of it fucking matters, but, if he wasn’t a natural born citizen I would probably find some excuse to support him anyway. Here is the thing though, if he wasn’t eligible, I am fully confident that Hillary Clinton would have found the evidence and used it. She would have been the nominee in 2008 and I would have voted for her. After she won, you would have been here carping that she got her start in politics due to her husband and most of us just voted for her because she had a vagina. Counterfactuals are fun.

OT, but I’m in Miami this weekend and just saw a TV ad from Randall Terry, who is apparently a candidate for Congress somewhere down here.

It featured Norma McCorvey, the now-repentant Jane Roe of Roe v Wade, and graphic images of aborted fetuses (so graphic that the station prefaced it with a warning) and then her saying “vote against Obama this year because he is a baby killer.”

    Just amazing.

Just got back from the gym. I am going every day between now and election day, wearing my Obama t-shirt.

Stopped at the store on the way back and just wearing the shirt opened up a conversation with the 2 fellows at the register. One asked if I thought Obama had a chance — so they obviously believe the “Mitt is ahead crap”. They are both going to vote, and this gave me an opportunity to also tell them to vote NO on the constitutional amendment in IL.

They word the amendment like it’s a good thing, but if you vote yes, it means the state of IL will no longer have to honor the pension and health care, not just going forward, but even for retirees. Boom just like that, and they can take it all away.
