Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

Infrastructure week. at last.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Consistently wrong since 2002

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Posted this in the last thread so posting it here too, just ’cause I think people should know that all the GOTV efforts they are doing are being used by OfA team in smart and amazing ways.

seriously, y’all should checkout this memo from OfA on their GOTV apparatus. it def should strike fear in Romney & Roves hearts.

    https://secure.assets.bostatic.com/pdfs/gotv/113Memo.pdf

“…teams registered 1,792,261 voters in key battleground states – nearly double the number of voters the Obama campaign registered in 2008…
volunteers have made 125,646,479 personal phone calls or door knocks that resulted in conversations with voters – not counting robo calls on auto-dialers, mail, literature drops or any other non-volunteer, non-personal contacts…
volunteers have signed up for 698,799 shifts to get out the vote over the final four days of this campaign”

Damn! future Dem pols will be fighting over the OfA database win or lose for Obama.

Sorry about your Eers John. Glad you didn’t have a heartattack!

Booman has a link to a memo from #TeamObama today about GOTV for next few days.

In order for Mitt to win he must get 65% of the votes in NC on Tuesday. 59% in Iowa and CO, 58% in Nevada, 55% in FL and Ohio and 52% in VA and Wisconsin!

I feel like my years long work is actually happily paying off!

Please continue volunteering and sending money! And don’t foreget to vote!

The best part for me starts at 4:25:
“You talked about him going to Rev. Wright’s church for 20 years…”
    “Yes.”
“But you also think he’s a Muslim.”
“Well he is a Muslim; his father was a Muslim, his father was an atheist and his father was a communist.”
“Was his father a Muslim or was his father an atheist?”
    “He’s all three!”

That is some grade A stupid right there.

    @Johnny Coelacanth:

It all makes sense once you remember that the real problem conservatives had with all of those atheist commie pinkos was that those atheist commie pinkos were Jews. Communist=Jewish was the formula for decades, and it seems as though quite a few conservatives have done a simple search-and-replace to substitute “Muslim” for “Jew” in their fearmongering screeds.

I just finished up a full day of canvassing here in Dayton. My friends and I combined to knock on nearly 200 doors or so, and we probably got 20-25% response rate who are definitely voting for the good guys. One thing I would say is that I did run into a couple disillusioned voters who are not voting at all or are a little disappointed, but I found no discernible enthusiasm at all for Mittens. It’s just a matter of convincing people that the choice is clear, and that THEIR VOTE COUNTS. The flyers here in Ohio make reference to 537 votes, so it should be damn well clear that even if you have hesitations, it is direly important that people haul their ass to the voting booth.

Also, voting in OH closes at 7:30 PM. That feels pretty early for an Election Day close.

Off my feet for the rest of the night, and doing one more shift before we hit the road to go back to NY tomorrow. I forgot how much I love doing this.

Listening to Limbaugh on Wednesday might be entertaining. Last time he became the de facto leader of the Republican party. He’s not in such a strong position this time Wonder how that’ll work out.

Except one, he said he didn’t like either candidate and wasn’t voting for President. Said no President’s done anything for him since Clinton. So I hauled out my flyer for the Dem House candidate and asked him to vote D for all the downticket races and leave the President blank. He seemed amenable to that.

Depends who those additional whites are, doesn’t it? If they show up in Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and South Carolina, it would have no impact on the electoral vote. If it’s in the northeast where white people support Obama it has no impact. Interestingly, the white vote in Ohio actually favors Obama slightly so an elevated white turnout could have no impact there. If the elevated turnout comes in the form of white women, it would be bad for Romney in the swing states as they favor Obama in those states.

@SiubhanDuinne: When yet another jackass middle-aged white guy in a big pickup truck cut me off while racing to have the chance to run a red light, I decided that maybe it was time for middle-aged white guys to have a time out.

Imagine what it would be like if white guys over, oh, I don’t know, 50? 45? 55? 60? couldn’t vote. I know there are plenty of nice, liberal middle-aged white guys. They could just take one for the team. Let everyone else whose group has been denied a vote at some point in time take on the responsibility of voting for awhile. White guys get a time out.

The composition of the electorate for the 2012 presidential election is looking quite similar to what it was in 2008 as well as 2004, according to an analysis of the demographics of Gallup’s likely voter sample since Oct. 1. Thus, key elements of President Obama’s electoral coalition, such as racial minorities, women, young adults, and postgraduates will likely turn out at rates similar to those in 2008.

As I stood in line and watched, I noticed that in 10 minutes, my wife and I were the only ones he approached with his voter guides, among the 30 or so people that strolled up…

Obama’s team is saying that they have not just a sense of the way the election is going, but really detailed numbers that give them a strong picture of what’s going on. When Obama tells you he’s winning, he’s not just hand waving; he has the numbers to back it up. Also, too, don’t trust the likely voter models in the polls; we’re doing a better job than the other guy of getting out unlikely voters.

Liberals weren’t going to vote for him anyway, but we of no party or clique try to give a fair chance to all candidates. I feel the family can affect voters’ view of the candidate; Obama, for example, probably benefits from his wife’s graciousness. I have no idea how Mrs. Obama really feels about us peasants, but she’s gracious to everyone in public, even under tremendous provocation. Then comes Mrs. Romney telling “you people” what information their majesties would and would not allow us. I just got done with a day of calling Ohio.

Ohio is a CLUSTERFUCK. “Early voting” there is way downtown in some place so inconvenient or scary or both, that nobody I talked to, from any walk of life or ethnic group, would even think about travelling there, even on a Sunday.

Yes, polls are 7-7 in Ohio on election day. Law says that employers must grant time off to vote, but doesn’t say how much or when.

Compare this to, say, Nevada, WHERE YOU CAN EARLY VOTE AT THE FUCKING SUPERMARKET. That is all kinds of awesome.

Since Ohio isn’t one of the Southern former Confederate states, it doesn’t get including in the Voting Rights Act, which means the feds can’t step in to stop this insanity in the same way they can in say Texas or Florida.

At least it appears Ohio doesn’t have voter ID.

And the people there are the nicest, most thoughtful, most talkative, most polite, most informed, and most engaged people I’ve talked to in any of the states I’ve been calling. That is a real breath of fresh air.

Still, I’m really worried about that state. I applaud everything everyone is doing there, and will do all I can to help from here (that means, tomorrow, more calls, goddammit, I hate making calls, but there’s just no other alternative).

I blurted that is crazy talk knowing what we know now (and that I researched it heavily at the time and it was crazy talk before the war). They responded by telling me the weapons were moved to Syria. I say that was a hell of a trick with satellites, drones and total air domination, not to mention why aren’t they being used in the civil war. They respond, he’s a liberal, what does he know. Fox & related does a great job of creating an alternate reality.

@freelancer: How are people in Florida not tarring and feathering the election officials and the Governor? I’d be pissed about this regardless of party.

Hey, hold on now, Florida passed the FairDistricts ballot measure before 2010 and it’s not citizens’ faults that the Republican leadership is a bunch of crooks who perverted the process to sow confusion and retain as many ‘safe districts’ as possible.

And we are working to try to winnow the extremists out of the state house and senate.

    Patience.

These people may seem pretty awful, but they also seem genuinely scared, and that makes my heart hurt.

Man, fuck them. I have no sympathy for those who let the GOP lie to them. In fact, they want the GOP to tell them that the black President is gonna screw them over, to justify their racism.

I don’t feel sorry for them crackers at all. Because there’s more of them than any other group, they’ve help the GOP hold this country hostage.

Most FPers here do little BUT insult other people. Same goes times ten for the commenters.

@Speculum Spatula: Seriously, if I was shown a part of my life where I spent hours and hours doing this routine of wandering in, dishing out the same tedious insults, copping the same utterly unfounded superior attitude, and acting like I was somehow CLEVER for doing it, I would quite honestly be ashamed. It would seem like the most pathetic no-life bullshit possible.

But please, don’t flatter yourself into thinking you’ve hurt my feelings. Your behavior is frankly creepy, in a way where it honestly hurts to imagine being the same way. I can’t imagine what the rest of your personal life must be like for you to devote SO MUCH time and energy to being this way.

South Carolina. It’s always South Carolina.

Most of them don’t seem to have any idea what Romney’s plans for America are and they don’t seem to care. They are voting against Pres. Obama rather than for RMoney. I think it’s racism that motivates them. And the woman who said Obama went to Rev. Wright’s church for 20 years and was a muslim, socialist atheist might have been anencephalic.

It must be seen to be believed. The saddest thing, in my view, are these young guys who are completely inarticulate.
Although I think the prize goes to the lady who said that Obama had a great opportunity to unite the country and he failed. It’s like they tell themselves these stories and narratives to give themselves a fig leaf of rational decision making.

You know those toy remote-controlled helicopters they sell these days, some with cameras in them? The ones kids like?
