Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Consistently wrong since 2002

“But what about the lurkers?”

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Let there be snark.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

In the Senate, welcome Senators Warren, Donnelly, Murphy, King, Heitkamp (hopefully), Kaine and (hooray) Tammy Baldwin (our first openly gay Senator).

In the House, Bachmann is only 400 votes ahead, while Maine, Maryland and Washington appear to have approved gay marriage and Colorado and Washington state to have legalized recreational marijuana. Minnesota’s gay marriage vote is on a knife edge.

We may not have taken the House back, but in my books tonight counts as a big fucking deal.

What else are you celebrating tonight?

ETA: “Signed, sealed, delivered”. Hee.

EATA:

Tammy Duckworth, a true American Hero, has been elected to the US House of Representatives, replacing a deadbeat teabagger, Joe Walsh.

In California, the “three strikes” law is being narrowed to make it so that the third “strike” will only be a serious, violent felony, and that some people who got ridiculous third strikes will be re-sentenced.

    That’s one.

My Congressional district got re-done, and we’ve been cut loose from the mouthbreathers, giving us a new Democratic rep. Yeah, they are tall.

That’s a goddamn good looking family. It’s almost unfair that people can be that smart, talented, good looking. And, evidently, decent. Many people, in our celebrity drenched culture that edifies the beautiful, the talented, the famous, the glib, the successful, see all that and feel small and insignificant. They default to pettiness and bitterness, and thus become easy picking for the demagogues who Circe-like sing the same old sordid racist shit song, and they buy into it.

OK, this doesn’t make a whole hell of a lot of sense. I’m +8 and damn glad Obama won. But life is still unfair and always will be, because some people pull the triple cherries genetically and some people don’t. If faith moves mountains, resentment causes tectonic shifts, and I think that’s the root of a lot of the hatred of this man.

But I also think Citizens United had a major victory today – I think that’s why we lost so many of the house races today. They basically bought the U.S. house of representatives. Take it away, Dr. Paul Krugman.

Tomorrow — or I guess today — comes the cleanup; when thousands, perhaps millions, of right-wing heads explode, it makes quite a mess. Also, notice that the polls were right. I wonder if I can get invited when Nate Silver is sworn in as president?
    __
OK, somewhat more seriously: one big thing that just happened was that the real America trumped the “real America”. And it’s also the election that lets us ask, finally, “Who cares what’s the matter with Kansas?”
    __
For a long time, right-wingers — and some pundits — have peddled the notion that the “real America”, all that really counted, was the land of non-urban white people, to which both parties must abase themselves. Meanwhile, the actual electorate was getting racially and ethnically diverse, and increasingly tolerant too. The 2008 Obama coalition wasn’t a fluke; it was the country we are becoming.

In 2008, the Obama coalition was considered the vanguard of the electoral future. In 2012, he showed that it had staying power. The future is now, and the Republicans will start having to reinvent their coalition, or spend a long time in the wilderness.

We have a couple meet-ups coming up so I’ll be sure to be around for those!

End of November don’t we have out of towners?

First round is on you, deadbeat.

    @You Know Who:

Perhaps it is time for one or more of the several sovereign states to take matters into their own hands

Ooh, I know what to say to this one: “I wish a motherfucker would.”

It seems to me that the lessons imparted by President Lincoln and Generals Grant and Sherman were never given a chance fully to take root, and that such a development could have a salutary remedial effect.

I think Scott Brown has a bright future, actually.

He is a Republican that a lot of people can work with. Not as hardcore an ideological warrior as his fellow GOP Senate candidates who went down to defeat.

Brown should have a brighter future than Paul Ryan.

Not speaking, necessarily, of the hardcore GOP.

By the way, everybody fantasizing about dick-waving from Nate Silver had better limit their expectations. I think the best you can hope for is some sober and restrained innuendo, a number of tables and charts, and a link or two.

You will have to wave your dicks (or, if you do not have a dick handy at the moment, whatever waveable object is available) on his behalf.

Sam Wang, on the other hand … well, let’s just say he’s not called Wang for nothing.

@You Know Who: Wow, Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen, don’t you have something better to be doing, like thanking your donors for your victory and kissing that Castro picture you keep in your desk (because, let’s face it, part of your victory relies on ‘fear of a Communist America’) instead of screwing around on blogs?

    Tsk, tsk.

I have no idea what my new handle means, but I love the sound of it. Sounds like kittehs giving the Black Panther salute while planning victory marches through our collective soul.

@WaterGirl: But I also think Citizens United had a major victory today – I think that’s why we lost so many of the house races today. They basically bought the U.S. house of representatives.

Bingo. I understand they dropped something $1.5mill to get crazy teabagger Ted Yoho into FL-3, and I’m sure they’re the reason so many other races were close.

This is going to be a slog, but we need to tip the scales here.

So, with recreational MJ legal in Washington and CO, is anyone else fantasizing Denver or Seattle as the new, American Amsterdam?

They could make a killing from pot tourism.

Elizabeth Warren is the first woman senator from MA. Did not realize that. I guess when Teddy Kennedy is senator for 500 years that limits things, but still I was surprised to learn that. Right on.

@trollhattan: Also, too, term limits have made our legislature a clown house and the term limit proposition was funded by the Kochs, decades ago.

Term limits empower monied interests, full stop.

    @You Know Who:

First, I give you props for showing up. I didn’t think you would.

Second, if your posts here over the last month or so reflect your actual beliefs, your passions, and you weren’t posting here because you were paid, or because you just enjoy irritating total strangers, then you must really feel bad right now. If you really believed that Romney was going to win, that all those things you claimed were true, then you have to feel like the whole universe just doesn’t like you. That’s a hard thing, man.

Third, you really need to take a break. You have to face up to the fact that you were pretty much wrong about everything. Why not spend some time reflecting on why that is so, why you are so out of step with the rest of the country. And don’t post anything anywhere until you can come up with something new. All your stuff is so stale, so 1994.
