Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The willow is too close to the house.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

This really is a full service blog.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Everybody saw this coming.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

In my day, never was longer.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Consistently wrong since 2002

You cannot shame the shameless.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

I am absolutely guttered, and I am listening to pop music for some reason. I’ve played this three times in a row, and I do, in a drunken stupor, one fucking amazing falsetto:

It won’t be long before I crank this:

So, give me your best. Not listening to the Stones or Floyd or Zeppelin or the Dead tonight. It’s all trash.

Link them and I will listen.

    How about the Beatles? ;)

Topic: Best “rock” band of all time. Use any metric you wish to measure. I’d argue there’s a handful in the discussion – Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin… who else?

I’d say that cultural impact should weigh as heavily as quality of music. By this measure, The Beatles are the clear number one. But if you judge by quality, I don’t see anyone at any time better than Zeppelin.

I hope that since we got rid of Mitt, that we cold also do away with the phrase “if you will.” I’ve puzzled over Mitt Romney’s claim to eschew big game hunting in order to hunt small rodents and rabbits and he he says “small varmints, if you will” fucking twice. After he lost the election, in his phone conference to his GOP donors, he uses “if you will” so frequently that it seems like he thinks it’s a serious talking point; that the only reason he thought he lost is because he didn’t say it often enough.

Hey, I just saw Marco Rubio starting his 2016 presidential run!

This is it! Karl Rove has listened to the people! He’s looked at the demographics! He has run the numbers!

What the people want, is a brown candidate! Someone with a name with lots of vowels in it, and who knows how to roll his “r’s” properly. Someone, ideally, right-wing and Cuban… and beholden to the Bush family.

Here he is! Marco Rubio, the Rethug darling of 2016, on his way!

@fuckwit: Marco Rubio ain’t brown. He just isn’t. He’s pasty white; probably doesn’t tan, just burns if he’s the sun for any length of time.

@PurpleGirl: Rubio is most likely descended from the blancos who were the aristocracy of Cuba. Spanish are considered dark in Europe but to us they’re just as white as Germans.

@Howard Beale IV: Still my fave Bebop track. But she really shone in that whole soundtrack.

Also: just spent the last hour picking a fight over email with a Discover Mag blogger about his snide treatment of archaeologists in a blog post about Neanderthal genetics. It’s fun making scientists squirm

I wandered over there and the relevant comments seem to have been deleted. A shame, as I would have enjoyed reading that…

    Ross Douthat:

Consider the Hispanic vote. … {Democrats are] winning recent immigrants because those immigrants often aren’t assimilating successfully — or worse, are assimilating downward, thanks to rising out-of-wedlock birthrates and high dropout rates. The Democratic edge among Hispanics depends heavily on these darker trends: the weaker that families and communities are, the more necessary government support inevitably seems.
    __
Likewise with the growing number of unmarried Americans, especially unmarried women.

And more in the Democrats-Only-Win-Because-Their-Voters-Are-Loser-Sluts-And-Slurs vein.

Thank, Ross, for continuing the fine tradition of insulting voters into the Democratic Party.

Seriously, these guys never fucking learn. It’s really kind of astonishing.

Based on your own history, Ross baby, would you have been prepared to marry the woman you wanted to have sex with during college until you found out she was using birth control had she gotten pregnant? Huh, huh, well, Ross baby?

For songs that make me smile, because I have the mentality of a 12 year old: ‘Yo Mama’ by Butterfingers

Well, that’s the official title, but the full line from the song is ‘Your Mama’s on the top of my “things to do” list’.

You want pure ear candy slash junk? Just go to Youtube and hit up Glee, and watch video after video. Sure, your mind may be mush after an hour or two, but once in a while going down that Youtube rabbit hole can be fun.

Want a slightly more complex experience? Look for Heart’s “Dog and Butterfly”, then jump to Rufus Wainright’s version, then continue again down the rabbit hole.
