Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Petty moves from a petty man.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Chris Hayes And Ta-Nehisi Coates In Conversation

Just to deliver on a promise made in a thread last week, here’s the video of Hayes and Coates talking about Twilight of the Elites at MIT last week.

<div align=”center”><iframe src=”http://techtv.mit.edu/embeds/21720?size=medium&amp;custom_width=432&amp;player=simple&amp;external_stylesheet=” frameborder=”0″ height=”275″ width=”432″></iframe></div>

The whole evening was great, but I have to confess that while I have very little of the fan left in me at my doddering age, it was a true thrill to meet none other than Charles Pierce after the show. This just about captures my reaction.

We only had a few minutes to chat, but I can tell you that his gift for ornate invective is as present in conversation as its is on the page; I wish I could recall his crack about Eric Fehrnstrom (whom he knew when they were both reporters at the Boston Herald) well enough to transcribe it for you.

You shoulda been there.

Hey, some people might have that reaction if they met Tom Levenson.

@Culture of Truth: They’d be sadly disappointed.

But thanks for that very kind thought.

Dunno about that, but you wouldn’t be the only middle aged woman with a Mrs. Robinson complex, that’s fer sure.

    He’s totally scrumptious.

@eemom: I feel much better now. I thought I was the only old lady who felt that way and was a little embarrassed about it.

Only about 20 minutes into the conversation I’m surprisingly impressed. When I saw Hayes pitching his book at our local Townhall, I and my friends were a bit underwhelmed. But so far, TNC has brilliantly bounded and directed the discussion in such a way that the problems in Hayes’s argument are nicely contained and manageable. TNC channels what could have been a blase intro-level survey of a topic into a substantive disquisition grounded in history and meaning. He’s good.

Thanks for posting this: I had planned on attending when you posted about it last week (I work but a few blocks away), but for various reasons I had to miss it.

    You shoulda been there.

You’re killing me, here. I was one of the approx. 500 people turned away from this event — which was bad enough — and now you’re telling me Charlie Pierce was there too?!?! Aargh does not suffice…

That said thank you for posting the video, very much appreciated. Looking forward to watching it with my dinner :-)

@Josie: @eemom: I luvs me some Chris Hayes, too. He should be in the running for sexiest man alive. He is my son’s age, and no, I’m not embarrassed. Nothing wrong with window shopping.

Thanks for putting this up, Tom. Chris’s show has me back in the habit of Sunday AM tv—and his mind is the most attractive thing about him. I love that he is willing to grasp the nettle on really hard issues, too.

@nancydarling: I don’t actually get up to watch it, but DVR it every weekend and love it. Between Hayes and Maddow, MSNBC is building a pretty great foundation for the future. They actually write books that I want to read, conduct great interviews and do segments on alot of topics that you don’t always see on the MSM. They seem like two of the smartest people on tv, and are also generally likable.

The title of this post should be “Chris Hayes and Ta-Nehisi Coates Conversating.”
