Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

A dilettante blog from the great progressive state of West Virginia.

Second rate reporter says what?

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

No one could have predicted…

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

The willow is too close to the house.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

For those of us with the sports disinterest chromosome deficiency, what is the backyard brawl?

It is a shame that many rivalries are gone.(Texas-TCU replacing Texas-Texas A&M? Brother Please!) Oh BTW I guess Jim Tressel is forgiven in Columbus, will Maurice Clarett receive the love?

@Mr Stagger Lee: There is still an Apple Cup and a Civil War. So they’re not all dead, although the Pac-12 rotations threatened at one point to skip them for two years. That didn’t go over well.

Backyard Brawl = WVU vs. Pitt (geographical hop-skip-and-jump between the schools, but different conferences now).

But no worries, WVU will have Kansas instead (edit: next week).

It’s fucking terrible, but at least we’ll get to see Notre Dame take on those historical powerhouses Wake Forest and Clemson in the coming years. And, of course, Rutgers is in the Big 10 (now 14) so all is right in the world.

Remember, Cole, it’s about educating young men and preparing them for a future outside the lines, it has nothing to do with corporate cash and television contracts. Nope, not at all.

Thank you, I was just about to Google it to find out what the hell it was. I just love how East-coasters always assume the rest of the world shares their particular sports obsessions.

for us HBCU alums, Bayou Classic game day today. Bayou Classic is the only HBCU “bowl” game that gets any national coverage. not surprising I guess since most HBCU games don’t get much besides local coverage.

anyway, I’ll be watching my Southern Jags beat up on the Grambling Tigers, hopefully, but the main action is the half-time show!

I just love how East-coasters always assume the rest of the world shares their particular sports obsessions.

I love how people from way out west- usually west of the Rockies, and most of those usually within a relatively short drive of the Pacific- think that Pittsburgh and Morgantown are located near a coast.

Boomer Sooner! That’s still a big rivalry. Though I remember back in the 60’s and 70’s Thanksgiving weekend game was Ou-Nebraska. Those were great games, almost always on national tv and for a time every year it was billed as The Game of the Century!

If you’re planning on surfing the Homestead Break, pray for the mother of all fracking earthquakes.

The funny thing is that there IS a coastal media bias when it comes to MLB, but it’s bi-coastal. ESPN focuses on the teams on the east coast, Fox- with its studios in LA- tends to give decent exposure to the west coast, but markets in flyover country are largely ignored until the postseason.

Ducks are killing the Beavers. Having trouble keeping track of who has the ball because they keep referring to both teams as Oregon.

They removed a student photographer from the game after one of the players ran way off the field at the end of a play and crashes into the crowd. May have a broken nose.

My cousin’s wife is getting ready to teach a course on sports statistics next semester, and when I asked her to identify the most intriguing stat she’s run across while preparing, she said that- though it seems counter-intuitive- when in fourth-down-and-less-than-five-yards-to-go situations, it’s wiser, in general, to go for it.

I asked her to break it down situationally for me, but I’m not holding my breath.

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): Yeah, you’d have to see all they count to come up with “wiser.” Giving up the ball like that has to hurt fairly often. And is also a momentum shifter.

  56. 56.

Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)

    November 24, 2012 at 5:46 pm

    @LT:

Yeah, you’d think that field position, relative strengths and weaknesses of the units on the field, injuries and weather conditions (and those are the factors I can come up with quickly, off the top of my head) would figure in. Makes me wonder if the stat isn’t greatly skewed because the teams that actually do go for it tend to have strong offenses, and those who have average or weak offenses rarely attempt it.
