For those of us with the sports disinterest chromosome deficiency, what is the backyard brawl?
2.
Mr Stagger Lee
It is a shame that many rivalries are gone.(Texas-TCU replacing Texas-Texas A&M? Brother Please!) Oh BTW I guess Jim Tressel is forgiven in Columbus, will Maurice Clarett receive the love?
3.
Yutsano
@Mr Stagger Lee: There is still an Apple Cup and a Civil War. So they’re not all dead, although the Pac-12 rotations threatened at one point to skip them for two years. That didn’t go over well.
4.
ploeg
Backyard Brawl = WVU vs. Pitt (geographical hop-skip-and-jump between the schools, but different conferences now).
But no worries, WVU will have Kansas instead (edit: next week).

well, we’ll always have big 10s, 12s, 14s classic nebraska-rutgers match-up.
It’s fucking terrible, but at least we’ll get to see Notre Dame take on those historical powerhouses Wake Forest and Clemson in the coming years. And, of course, Rutgers is in the Big 10 (now 14) so all is right in the world.
Remember, Cole, it’s about educating young men and preparing them for a future outside the lines, it has nothing to do with corporate cash and television contracts. Nope, not at all.
Thank you, I was just about to Google it to find out what the hell it was. I just love how East-coasters always assume the rest of the world shares their particular sports obsessions.

I cannot believe I’m yelling for USC to beat ND. Hate em both but ND does not deserve to be in the BCS National Championship.

for us HBCU alums, Bayou Classic game day today. Bayou Classic is the only HBCU “bowl” game that gets any national coverage. not surprising I guess since most HBCU games don’t get much besides local coverage.
anyway, I’ll be watching my Southern Jags beat up on the Grambling Tigers, hopefully, but the main action is the half-time show!

The Buckeye’s defense has made a few pretty good plays, but they suck more often than not. I think Braxton Miller is way overrated.

I just love how East-coasters always assume the rest of the world shares their particular sports obsessions.
I love how people from way out west- usually west of the Rockies, and most of those usually within a relatively short drive of the Pacific- think that Pittsburgh and Morgantown are located near a coast.
25.
Dee Loralei
Boomer Sooner! That’s still a big rivalry. Though I remember back in the 60’s and 70’s Thanksgiving weekend game was Ou-Nebraska. Those were great games, almost always on national tv and for a time every year it was billed as The Game of the Century!
Purdue – IU for the Old Oaken Bucket! Yeah, I know, they both suck but having grown up in West Lafayette and being a Purdue alum (following my dad and grandmother) I have to cheer for my Boilermakers!
29.
FlyingToaster
@JCJ: As a Hoosier (and Marching Hundred) alum I’ll offset your cheering with mine for the Cream-n-Crimson.
If you’re planning on surfing the Homestead Break, pray for the mother of all fracking earthquakes.
The funny thing is that there IS a coastal media bias when it comes to MLB, but it’s bi-coastal. ESPN focuses on the teams on the east coast, Fox- with its studios in LA- tends to give decent exposure to the west coast, but markets in flyover country are largely ignored until the postseason.

@Yutsano: not going to the game, heading to California. Working on Dad’s estate. Probably won’t be settled for a few months still, but we’ll resolve a bit more of it.
I’m lost. Is going for it on 4th with crappy field position just normal college football these days? That’s fucking high school.
OrSt converted a 4-2 at the OR 48 – with a 33yd run. How the fuck does that happen?
44.
Opie_jeanne
Ducks are killing the Beavers. Having trouble keeping track of who has the ball because they keep referring to both teams as Oregon.
They removed a student photographer from the game after one of the players ran way off the field at the end of a play and crashes into the crowd. May have a broken nose.
45.
Opie_jeanne
@LT: we are just south of Eugene now, near a city named Drain.
I’m lost. Is going for it on 4th with crappy field position just normal college football these days?
My cousin’s wife is getting ready to teach a course on sports statistics next semester, and when I asked her to identify the most intriguing stat she’s run across while preparing, she said that- though it seems counter-intuitive- when in fourth-down-and-less-than-five-yards-to-go situations, it’s wiser, in general, to go for it.
I asked her to break it down situationally for me, but I’m not holding my breath.
@Opie_jeanne: I’ve driven that way in July and it really is spectacular. Of course I enjoy the drive when it’s misty and rainy so I’m just an odd duck.
Yeah, you’d think that field position, relative strengths and weaknesses of the units on the field, injuries and weather conditions (and those are the factors I can come up with quickly, off the top of my head) would figure in. Makes me wonder if the stat isn’t greatly skewed because the teams that actually do go for it tend to have strong offenses, and those who have average or weak offenses rarely attempt it.

OR-OR ST was known as the Toilet Bowl for ages – you knew that. Now two powerhouses.
Why couldn’t Michigan have gotten one more lousy TF? Just one more?

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): Yeah, you’d have to see all they count to come up with “wiser.” Giving up the ball like that has to hurt fairly often. And is also a momentum shifter.
