FSM help me, I’ve come to love Gangnam Style. And all the parodies.

This parody is damn good — it uses the visual cues of the original but they wrote their own words. Really good lyrics relating to NASA Johnson Space Center.

It’s awesome that every Korean guy across the world today is like “Sure, yeah, I’ll star in your Gangnam parody”.

Serious post: I love what Gagnam style says about America. In the video, you see American culture as interpreted by Korean artists. Koreans who, by this point, have been pretty heavily westernized. Like the Japanese. Like the Germans. Like the Russians, to a lesser degree at this point, but, catching up!

American culture is fun! This is its main selling point and the main power it holds against tyranny and oppression. Who wouldn’t rather have fun than trundle along in some grim dystopian paradise?

(Seriously, if you are into engineer-type games, kerbal space program is the best indie game since minecraft)

@redshirt: South Korea can’t really help not being influenced by American culture. There is a large American military presence that they know they owe their existence to. And Japan and much of Europe was rebuilt by the Marshall plan and we also have our bases there as well. There are of course problems (NO MEANS NO YOU FECKING IDJITS!) but on the whole Europe and Japan/Korea appreciate us there.

As if to punctuate the point, “it’s the guns, stupid,” this just happened in China. Yes, crazy people could use a knife instead of a gun…and they do. But less people die. But, yeah, Freedom, it’s what for dinner at the wake.

A Guangshan County hospital administrator said there were no deaths among the nine students admitted to the hospital, although two badly wounded children were transferred to better-equipped hospitals outside the county. A doctor at Guangshan’s hospital of traditional Chinese medicine said that seven students had been admitted there, but that none were seriously injured.

This is cute. I like it.

But darn you A.L. for posting that song last night that has firmly planted “Hallelujah” in my brain. It’s a sad, strange, bitter, and did I say sad song. I think that Cohen would be pleased to have his music used that way but I’m not sure that the Spirit of the Sabbath would be pleased to have such a sad and bitter song sung as a greeting.

But of course, I’m not divine so what do I know?

I really like this, and would not have seen it. Thanks.

Would you believe I have never seen a gangnam video before? Vaguely aware of the style from pop culture and channel surfing.

I live under a carefully cultured rock so I have never seen the original video. I feel my life is richer for the absence.

I first hear the song about 4-5 weeks ago between periods of a hockey game & thought they were saying “I got no, got no style.” People in the arena started hopping around like a bunch of Kansas City Fa . . . well, if you have seen Blazing Saddles you know the offensive reference.

    sigh, I’m old now so
I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ’em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you’d say. Now where was I…

I went to see The Hobbit yesterday. When I saw The Life of Pi last week, the multiplex staff handed me a loaner pair of 3D glasses at the door, to be returned at the end of the movie. This time, the girl at the ticket counter gave me a pair to keep; and she said that when I brought them to future screenings, I’d get a discount on the ticket price. Is this something they’ve started doing at American cineplexes?

@Amir Khalid: In my experience, they charge you an extra fee and then want you to recycle them at the end of the movie. You don’t get a discount if you bring your own. Others may have different experiences.

OK, Led Zeppelin is going to be on CBS Sunday Morning. I’m not sure how to feel – on one hand it’s “Zeppelin Rules!!!!”, on the other “Sunday Morning? The bastion of mellow? God I’m old”.

Fuck it, I don’t care where they are I’m gonna watch, then buy Celebration Day on Blu-ray and crank it up.

    December 16, 2012 at 9:50 am

@S. cerevisiae: I think we have to accept the reality that the Greatest Generation is mostly dead and gone and that it’s the Baby Boomers who are the new old people. CBS’s Sunday Morning is mostly watched by old people so Led Zepplin fills the niche that belong to people like Frank Sinatra 25 years ago.

@Schlemizel: No, no, you’re missing the boat on this one. I’m an old too and Gangnam Style is THE BOMB, as the kids say.

I’m so pleased to spread the Gangnam joy and get my name on the front page! w00t!

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but getting one’s nym front-paged lost a bit of its magic (for me, anyway) after I saw it happen to Special Timmeh.

Thanks for NASA Johnson Style. God it made me laugh. I thought I’d seen enough of the relentless style but what an incredible way to convey information that will be remembered and makes you smile. Best. Recruitment. Video. Ever. Now I’ll read John’s piece which I am going at backwards.
