Tell you what, wingers: you can have all the guns you desire as soon as you go through as much training as a guy on the President’s personal detail. Deal?
Ted & Hellen
That is pretty stupid, which is par for the right.
However…the REAL reason Obama is a gun control hypocrite is that he is pretending to run around with his hair on fire post-Sandy Hook, after four straight years of zero gun control advocacy.
Now THAT’S some hypocrisy.
schrodinger's cat
Only 20% of the population owns guns, why do we have to put up with this insanity for such a small sliver of the population, we outnumber them, it is time to out organize them.
ETA: And I also wonder how many of them want free unfettered access, the kind that NRA advocates for, so that any nut case can buy a gun as easily as he can buy a gallon of milk.

John, I will never forgive you for including that link in this posting, which I was dumb enough to click on

@schrodinger’s cat: I recommend rushing them.

@schrodinger’s cat: Well, they have all the guns, so… we’d have to have a lot of 12 year olds to bum rush them.

There have been two presidents shot during my lifetime. How many gun nuts – other than with their own mishandled weapons?
contract3d
I, for my sins, followed the link and read the whole thing.
The Onion couldn’t have done it better.
Oh wait. You mean it wasn’t satire?
dmsilev
That’s backwards. Shouldn’t it be that “guns everywhere” Congressmen are hypocrites unless they also call for removal of their own security?
(yes, yes, expecting logic is probably too much to ask for)
Felinious Wench
Gee, I wonder who he needs protection from?

Someone saw McArdle’s stupidity and thought to themselves, “I can TOTALLY beat that.”
and here we are.

@DFS: I agree. Only those with true combat/police training should ever be allowed to carry any gun in any public space.

One trouble with that wingnuts’ rant is that statistically and historically a president is hundreds of time more likely to fall victim to gun violence than she or her kid.
Paul
So I guess the Republican God Ronald Reagan was a hypocrite, too? Reagan supported both the Mulford Act and Brady bill. and last time I checked, Reagan also had Secret Service protection. Oh, that’s right, I forgot, Obama is black…
Felinious Wench
Oh, and I unfriended my 10th person over their gun hysteria today. And not one regret.
japa21
I feel sorry for the daughter. The worse part is that some of what she says has an actual legitimacy to it, such as having the expectation that schools should be a safe place for your children. But then she goes of on the tangent. She forgets that the protection that Obama and his family has were not always there, so yes, he and Michelle have had to have those worries. They lived in Chicago for several years and although not in the very worst part of the city, they were well aware of the potential for violence.
And she is writing as if the President wants to take away all guns. The stupid, it hurts.
jl
So stupid, I assume it is aimed at weak minded people who have a gun in the house for self-protection. Shore up that base of support. Get some fallacious reasoning going in some gun owner’s minds to shut down the cognitive dissonance that I have heard is starting the break down the crazy. As in “OK, I am a gun owner and an NRA member, but this has gone too far, let’s have some sane regulation.”
Paul in KY
@DFS: I wouldn’t even give them that deal as there are some nutwads who could/would pass it.
Citizen_X
@Ted & Hellen:
Or, you know, changing your mind.
kathy a.
ok. someone has gone over the side here.
we have secret service and other protection for presidents because some of our presidents done been shot already. because they were presidents. get it?
obama’s kids were born pre-presidency. he now has that protection, because POTUS being shot dead is even worse than my kids’ parents being shot dead. get it?
i have kept a low-public-profile because the work i do is not popular. because i actually was warned by deputies in a courtroom about threatening comments a court witness made. and so on.
i do not keep guns in my house. i never wanted my kids around guns. i do not trust untrained people with any guns whatsoever. i hate guns, to tell the truth, because so many bad things have happened.

@Regnad Kcin: I think it is a riff on a famous song. Have the riff, just can’t remember the song’s title.

No, this actually makes perfect sense, if you accept their worldview.
Which is why I never was, even as a kid, and am not, and never will be (barring some drastic changes) a conservative or Republican.
catclub
@Ted & Hellen: “after four straight years of zero gun control advocacy.”
I actually agree with this. Obama can wait for long times until he thinks an issue is ready. DADT repeal comes to mind.
Which Obama got what he wanted on, when he did speak out on it.
If he gets something passed now (and he has been pretty successful at that, by the way.) Then his hypocrisy will turn out pretty well. Almost better than screaming for gun control and not getting any.
Mike G
I’m waiting for all the pro-gun politicians to decline their security measures when they meet the public. Under their ideology, wouldn’t they feel “safer” greeting an audience where many citizens are armed?

@Citizen_X: Kitchen implement actually has a decent point for once. It’s shitty that it took the masacre of young children to get any movement. While I understand the poitics of it and agree that the POTUS couldn’t do anything prior to this election if he wanted to get re-elected, it still sucks. Of course, kitchen implement will bleat about leadership and purity and refuse to acknowledge that you have to actually win elections to get anything done becuase it’s as stupid as a stump.
No matter what, anytime kitchen implement speaks all I hear is the sound of someone who tried to make excuses and justifications for pedophiles.

@Culture of Truth: Chiefs of Police are routinely for gun control. They occasionally are pilloried by the same right-wing gun nuts, as hypocrites, but will get a pass far more often than Obama.
Culture of Truth
@Ted & Hellen: do you even know what that word means?
piratedan
@Ted & Hellen: yeah… I sure remember those halcyon days of other presidencies when other members of Congress were assaulted in public with automatic weaponry and elementary schools and movie theaters weren’t the location of choice for the mentally ill to express themselves violently.
If only we could simply ignore these continued outbursts like we did in Reagan’s days…..

Yeah, because during his first term there would have been absolutely no shitstorm at even the mention of the most benign gun control proposal and it would have sailed through Congress by unanimous consent.

I invite the gun nutz to call the White House switchboard and explain in loving detail their gun collection and their personal opinion of our lovable Barry Bamz. They might get a visit from those very Secret Service people that they were complaining about at their own house! OK, granted, they might not be there to actually protect said gun nut, but you can’t have everything.

Also how come Obama gets to live in the White House?
Culture of Truth

Free gubmint housing for near people, obviously.

@Ted & Hellen:
If that’s the case, what does that make all the Democrats in Congress? You do realize that it didn’t matter what the hell Obama did, NO gun control whatsoever would have passed.

I used to drop by Denninger’s site a few years ago. When he stuck to economics, it was a somewhat interesting place. But teh awesome blackness of a fully operational Kenyan Usurper soon overwhelmed the place, and it quickly degenerated into a haven for birthers and paranoid doomer cranks.

Whoever coined the term, “the stupid, it burns”, was surely inspired by idiot winds of this sort. Those people are moon barkers, pure and simple (as in simple minded).

@Felinious Wench: Is there anything more chickenshit than a Facebook tough-guy?
Gun groper to me in a thread, after I revealed that my guns are in a safe, all partially dissembled with the ammo stored separately:
Groper: I hope your (sic) comfortable with your protection without a gun!
Me: Well, I’m not a paranoid nutcase, and the biggest threat to my family is a tornado, so the shelter I installed is just what I need.
Hill Dweller
@catclub: Obama spent the majority of his first two years building support and trust in the Pentagon before really making the case publicly. Despite getting hammered for it, Obama went with the Pentagon’s timeline. In hindsight, it’s hard to overstate how vital that was to successfully ending DADT.

Traditionally, living in the White House, traveling in Air Force One, and having secret service detail come with the job as POTUS.
But for a black president, it is all elitist and hypocritical.

So what everybody here is saying is that we can re-tool all those old jokes, like, for instance, “two wingnuts walk into a building. You’d think one of them would have noticed.”

I am amazed that PBO is still alive – I remember watching them walk down Pennsylvania Ave after the inauguration, and FLOTUS never let go of his hand, switching from one hand waving to another, but never letting go of his hand, as if to say ‘If someone’s going to take a pop at him, I’m going to be hanging on.’ This new stance on gun control is going to be even more dangerous – security must be even more ramped up, if it’s possible to be more ramped up. Don’t envy being POTUS or a Secret Service operative – must be a nightmare, to be threatened by your own citizens as well as al-Qaeda, Taliban, etc. Oh wait, PBO has different ‘own citizens’ than that Romney would’ve had if he’d been elected Prezznint.

@Ted & Hellen:
You do realize that we live in a democracy, right? And that leaders are actually supposed to do what is popular (while respecting the rights of the minority, in the case of American expressions of democracy), right?
This whole idea that it’s somehow a bad thing that an American leader would “hold his finger in the wind” to see what the public wants and then do it is … mind-bogglingly stupid.
In fact, some of the worst decisions our politicians make are when they defy public opinion and do unpopular things.
Leadership in a democracy comes from the bottom up, not the top down. When “leadership” comes from the top down in a democracy, it’s almost always bad policy.
For more examples of “bottom up” policy, see the entire Civil Rights movement, the Labor Movement, Women’s Suffrage, the anti-child labor movement, the abolitionist movement, and pretty much every other successful movement in the history of the USA.
You’re an idiot if you think “holding a finger to the wind” is actually an indictment of and American politician.
Paul
@Ted & Hellen:
Shouldn’t it be obvious? No matter what President Obama does, you criticize him to no end. Yet, when Congress blocks him for no good reason you could care less.
Heck, show me all your postings where you have criticized Congress for anything. You can’t because you have never criticized Congress. You must be one of the 11% in this country who approves of Congress. Hell, what a great job Bernie Sanders et all did in keeping Gitmo open!
Cassidy
@Ted & Hellen: Again, the philosophical bleating of the kind of human wreckage that justifies and makes excuses for fucking children is not high on anyone’s list to listen to.
different-church-lady
@Meg: John Adams didn’t have any of that shit.
Cassidy
@Paul: Well you know, if that President would stop being so damn black, i’m sure kitchen implement could find a reaosn to get behind him.

They can’t come up with something better? Really?
That is how you know, that they know their arguments are all weak and would be rejected by many.
Meg
@different-church-lady: You are right. Then we ended up with a bunch of dead presidents.
Oh, wait.

We need to start by going after the NRA.
First, remove tort protection from gun manufacturers. Just like we did against cigarette
manufacturers.
Soonergrunt
@Cassidy: Are you saying he’s a Catholic Priest?
That’s pretty low, Dude.
Soonergrunt
@Allen: Dem candidates need to make the connection between gun manufacturers, the NRA and these mass shootings, with how an event happens, the NRA hypes it as both a threat that needs to be countered with guns and a potential reason for the government to ban guns so you need to buy more, generating sales for the manufacturers who cut Wayne LaPierre in on the action.
“They like these events because they drive sales. I’m trying to protect Americans. I welcome their hatred.”

@Cassidy:
If his next book were titled “Presidenting While Black” I’d certainly understand why. There are times when he’s speaking that I’d really love to be a mind-reader.
Paul
@Amir Khalid:
Absolutely! I’m sure we have all heard about mass killings stemming from ping-pong…
Good grief! Where do these people come from???
Napoleon
@trollhattan:
I was half watching the news last night while cooking and they had a clip of Obama from yesterday talking about the Republicans and he said something like “they have a problem saying yes to me, for whatever reason, but they have to get over it.”
That is as close as he has come to saying “they hate me presidating while black”.
J.W. Hamner
We trust the police and Secret Service with their firearms because of the training and accountability inherent in those professions.
I think every liberal would be ecstatic if gun owners had to go through even a fraction of that to get their AR-15.
CW in LA
Yeah, I just bet that horde of John Wilkes Booth wannabes resents the president’s secret service protection.
karen
The reason the right wing has their knickers in a twist over Obama’s Secret Service protection is they don’t want him to have it. They never wanted him to have it because it’s their wet dream to take him out. Period.
Aet
It’s a fascinating argument because it takes insanity as a normal state.
“I own a gun. I choose to protect my kids by carrying a gun to defend them. When my kids go to school, the school takes charge of my kids. Therefore, the school should carry guns. And politicians don’t count because they don’t carry guns.”
I may not be a trained psychologist, but even an idiot like me can see the severe paranoia here. You can almost hear ticking.
And its just so rich and creamy too! Other people’s opinions make him ill, but only those he disagrees with. The only valid parenting style is clearly his. So much to unpack!

They’d been quiet, but went on the offensive today. I’d been waiting for it to start. I suspect the nuts will feel the proper amount of time has passed to mourn and now it’s time to get riled up.

He is calling for gun control while being protected by armed Secret Servicemen and talking to the UN on his Blackberry about rounding up all the NRA members, seizing their weapons, and hurling them into unheated, flea-infested, FEMA concentration camps where Islamic guards will piss on Charleton Heston’s bible. Maybe it’s BECAUSE there are so many guns around that he HAS to have Secret Service protection?
