Come Monday

A DC area reader wants to do a Balloon Juice inauguration meet-up. Maybe in the city but maybe in Northern VA since the city will be such a zoo.

Anyone interested?

(On a related note, I’ll be in Arlington, VA in mid-February and would be up for a DC meet-up…would probably have to be in Arlington though, as I won’t have that much time to get around.)

I live on the Hill and am open. I would make it near a Metro station -particularly Monday because the inauguration and parade are going to shut so many streets down.

I am too old to know of cool, but less hipster-y places and as I live on the Hill beyond these environs am a little less familiar.

A previous comment seem to end up in moderation ….

I am on the Hill and am open. Just make it at/near a Metro stop – between the inauguration, luncheon, and the all-day parade this will consume most of the day and many streets/bridges are closed for most of the day.

AND: If you’re in the Virginia area: Helen Dragas’ reappointment to the UVA Board of Rectors has apparently sailed through a Virginia Senate panel, although it’s not
come up for full vote yet.

You will remember Dragas for leading a backdoor coup to oust UVA President Theresa Sullivan, which failed. Dragas did this without ever calling a full meeting of the Board of Rectors, has never given an explanation for why she wanted to fire Sullivan (who was returned after massive student and faculty protests), and the accreditation board is now looking really closely at UVa after the debacle.

The UVA board is full of politically connected business leaders; not as diverse as other major universities.

Mark Warner, Democratic US Senator, is supporting Dragas, who has been a font of donations to Democrats. (Warner DC office: 202 224 2023)

Call his office, and call your state Senator and state delegate to vote against reappointing Dragas.

Governor Transvaginal Bob McDonnell reappointed Dragas; this is looking like a loyalty vote for Republicans, who control the General Assembly, and for the business oligarchy in Virginia. (Dragas is a Virginia Beach real estate developer.)

From Charlottesville’s alternative weekly, The Hook: Dragas just a tool in right wing reform

Consider ACTA. One of the few people to publicly support Dragas for firing Sullivan was Anne Neal, president of ACTA, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. The language Dragas used to justify firing Sullivan reads as if taken directly from ACTA’s position papers. While the mission page of goacta.org speaks to idealistic goals of “higher standards,” “accountability,” and “affordable education,” a more in-depth examination reveals discussions about the proliferation of courses straying from the Western canon, the undue influence of Marxist professors on campus, and the need for a balance of conservative teachings.

What the ACTA website fails to mention is the name of key supporter Charles Koch, who, with brother David, has amassed a $60 billion fortune, largely from oil and coal.

ACTA appears to be an effective investment for the brothers.

There isn’t much that isn’t generic in terms of Arlington bars, esp. near metro stops. IOTA seems to have the best food (looking at menus) which usually accompanies better drinks – not being a bar person, I am out of my element. Not sure about the noise level, however. Sunday evening is definitely a better fit.

Family bidness makes me a 95% no-show, but here’s my input:

The best location would be somewhere around the Clarendon or Ballston Metro stops in Arlington. Both those areas are (relatively) convenient by car. Reston is too far out for D.C. people, and I believe that Leesburg is technically in West Virginia, although that fact is suppressed.

Around Clarendon, La Tasca is an excellent tapas bar 0.1 mile from the Metro station down Wilson Boulevard. Great food and lots of space. I would be willing to call and see what kind of arrangement could be made for a group and relay the information. I know they have an upper room that would probably be ideal, but I’ve never been up there.

Around Ballston, there is Bailey’s Pub in the Ballston Common Mall. It’s a sports bar–no more, no less–but it has pretty good bar food, the beers are cold, and it has tons of room for a big group.

Sorry I’m going to miss this one, although I am still trying to weasel out of my other commitment.

As alternatives to the above, I would suggest people concentrate on Clarendon. That is a heavy restaurant area–Cheesecake Factory, lots of specialty places–so there must be something around there that people could agree on.

ETA: I see DCLaw1 doesn’t like Clarendon, so I would say to look for someplace in Ballston Common Mall or in that vicinity.

About a 40/60 chance I could join the fun on Sunday (depending on whether wife is interested) and 50/50 chance on Monday if it’s late enough in the day (but it looks like it’s not leaning that way). There’s a couple of new ones in the district which are great. Boqueria which I know from nyc which can be on the pricey side but they have a truly great selection of wines by the glass and bottles that are spectacular for prices comparable to others in the city. I might have the opportunity to stop by, but my fear is I’ll never be able to find the group. I like Bailey’s but it can get packed, and I imagine championship Sunday the night before a holiday it will be. I’ll work on finding a place with a separate room for Doug J’s visit.

If eemom stops back by here, I think she needs to reconfigure the D.C. meet-up this afternoon. Currently it’s scheduled for 5:00 at Bailey’s Pub at Ballston Common. I was the one who suggested the venue on Friday, but it completely slipped my mind then that this is a huge NFL Sunday–conference title games–and Bailey’s will likely be packed with rowdy football fans. Oops!

There are a lot of places near the Ballston Metro station, but I don’t know a lot of them. Rock Bottom is also at Ballston Common, and it is good, but I can’t remember how much of a “sports bar” it is and whether it’s likely to be crowded.

Note: I am not running this show and will be unable to attend, but I wanted to head off a potential fiasco.

We did it!

We raised the 25,000 for The Civics Center, and with the external matches, that gives them $60,000 for this Spring effort!

You guys rock!
