Overall I thought Beckel was making some pretty accurate points, namely that a lot of guns on campus could lead to a lot of accidental shootings and that, if date rape was the largest part of the campus rape crisis, then guns are going to provide no solution at all. Of all of the people in that conversation it seems a bit off to pick him out as the one to criticize.

Yes, I thought he was making sense too – armed drunk frat boys? What could go wrong? Yes, it was a problem that he didn’t include date rape when thinking of campus rape, but the subject of discussion was armed college students, and crime-deterrence by students packing. Unless college girls go armed on every date in case the nice-seeming guy she agreed to date turns out to be a rapist, being armed won’t deter date rape.

I think Joe Salazar’s statement earlier this week (which was sort of in the same spirit as this) was entirely accurate and made excellent points. (Namely, that the more people you’ve got carrying around guns, the more likely they’re going to think that drunk guy who’s coming up to ask the time is actually a rapist and consequently blow his brains out. Or kill a kid who’s just trying to turn around in your driveway because it’s totally a home invasion. Or shoot your granddaughter as she’s sneaking back in past curfew. Etc.) The outrage over that was bullshit.
This, however? Beckel had to be actively reminded that date rape counts as rape. And then blew it off again. Sorry, no; if you’re incredulous that rape occurs on college campuses, and ongoingly so instead of quickly clarifying that you mean stranger attacks, then you’ve probably got a “legitimate rape” mindset. This dude walks like a duck and quacks like one too.
On the other hand, he DID just get a bunch of FOX people to admit that date rape counts as rape. So maybe it’s secretly 11th dimensional chess.
