Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

He really is that stupid.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

The words do not have to be perfect.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

So GMF doesn’t mean Genetically Modified Feline, then?

I think that’s just as well, all things considered.

    Parbleu! I don’t see, when I look
myself over, any ground whatever for discon-
tent. I have property, I am young, I belong
to a house which has certain good reasons to
call itself noble; and I think, through the
rank to which my blood entitles me, there are
very few stations in life that I cannot fill. As
to courage, of which, of course, we ought to
think first, I know, without vanity, that I am
not lacking there; I have been seen by the
world to carry on an affair in a sufficiently
vigorous and dashing manner. As for wit,
there’s no question but what I have that, and
with it enough good taste to judge without
study, and to talk about everything. At the
theatre, of which I am truly an idolator, I
can wear a wise face, decide the fortunes
of a play, and lead the applause at all the fine
speeches which merit hurrahs. I’m sufficiently
active; I’ve a good air and good looks, above
all fine teeth, and my figure is slim. As to
my style of dressing, I think, without vanity
that any one would be foolish to rival me
there. My position in the world is as good as
can be; the fair sex adore me; I stand well
with the king; and, therefore, my dear mar-
quis, I see, on all sides, every reason to be
    satisfied with myself.

I really feel for NC residents. I have family there so I pay more attention to NC politics. The Republican controlled legislature is really mucking things up in the state introducing rotten bill after rotten bill. Then I read at TPM that a Republican strategist stabbed a couple of Democratic strategists and the wife died this morning. Horrifying.

The Comedy Channel, on the other hand, loves America.

I almost feel sorry for Reinhart and Rogoff after that take down. Almost.

For biting an opponent’s arm in Sunday’s Premier League match, Liverpool FC star striker Luis Suarez has been suspended for 10 matches (the rest of this season, and the first six matches of the next.) The normal suspension for a red-card offence is just three matches.

This isn’t Suarez’s first long suspension, or even his first for biting. Per the BBC, when at Ajax Amsterdam he was banned for seven matches after he bit PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal on the shoulder in November 2010.

Then, after coming to Liverpool, he was banned for eight matches and fined £40,000 by the FA for racist verbal abuse of Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in December 2011.

Liverpool FC have complained that Suarez’s latest punishment is harsh. Given his previous record, I must disagree.

Speaking of laughing more, I recently read a funny comment (Gawker?). While making fun of that New Hampshire state rep who is suggesting that the marathon bombing was a government conspiracy, someone postulated the motive was to find an excuse to confiscate all pressure cookers. The brilliant response was, “First they came for the Easy-Bake Ovens…”

So the baby blanket I was trying to make for my friend at work turned into a disaster (hmm, perhaps working on a semi-complicated pattern while sitting with my sick/dying father was not the best idea), so I went back to an old favorite. This, IMO, is particularly good because I made the same blanket in girly colors for the baby’s older sister when she was born (almost three years ago — yikes!). His version is going to be white and brown with a green border because I could not find any blue cottons that I liked.

Why did I watch that entire video? At first I kept thinking something was going to happen. I did like seeing him talking to all those people. I suspected he might get in trouble with that basketball or in the end finally make a basket. But none of that happened.

And in today’s installment of “if we ban guns, murderers’ll just use hubcaps”:

    news.yahoo.com/police-5-people-found-dead-small-ill-town-141757368.html

MANCHESTER, Ill. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the slayings of five people whose bodies were found in a house in the tiny Scott County community of Manchester. A suspect is in custody.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says the victims were found early Wednesday morning in the southwestern Illinois community, 50 miles west of Springfield. She didn’t have any details on the deaths or the circumstances surrounding the capture of the suspect.

A school superintendent in the area says he was informed by sheriffs early Wednesday morning that the victims had been beaten to death with a dozen Yugo plastic hubcaps. Les Stevens of the North Greene School District says he canceled classes because authorities warned him at the time that the suspect was at large. The district has since been informed that the man was captured.
