My personal favorite George Jones song.
I recently discovered that the only decent playlist my iTunes genius has come up with is “Honky Tonk and Outlaw”.

I have never been divorced, nor has anyone in my immediate family, but I forget that fact every time I listen to The Grand Tour.
The Republic of Stupidity
One of the things I always liked about Jones’ singing was the little baroque-like flourishes he’d put at the end of phrases…
Bordered on scatting, but in a country setting…
Very classy… very sweet…

George Jones stopped loving music today.

There is no more perfect country artist than George Jones. If you think Johnny Cash is it, you are not hipster enough for me. I was into George Jones when being into George Jones wasn’t cool.
This is my dad’s country, the country of my childhood, and though I have always been fundamentally a rock-and-roll fan, this style of C&W makes me feel at home.

Ah, an Open Thread tag at long last.
Hot stuff.

I just love this type of country music. Feels so authentic and real and tied to real lives lived. Just listening to this song gives me chills. RIP George.

George Jones and no Richie Havens? Just fucking wow.
Just Some Fuckhead
@Cris (without an H): Agreed. Johnny Cash could sing anything and be a star. George Jones was country music distilled.

@raven
You must have been long-distance reading what’s left of my mind. Thanks.
BTW, did your Cap’n Fuzzy swag ever show up?

George Jones/Tammy Wynette-We’re Gonna Hold On
ally
@Cris (without an H):
Me too.
My all time favorites were “Choices” and “Golden Ring.” There’s a wonderful duet of “Golden Ring” with George and Tammy on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9KniULwvjE
I remember when “Choices” came out it got no play whatsoever on our local “country” station…

George Jones – No Show Jones (Live at Farm Aid 1985) in my hometown!

@NotMax: Sure did and, since it was 45 degrees this am, I can wear the hoodie for a while yet! Here’s the logo!

And his swinger song
GEORGE JONES & MELBA MONTGOMERY LETS INVITE THEM OVER
We talk it over and over and we know it’s not right
We should stay away forever but we’re lonesome each night
Yes we stay away for awhile but we know in the end
We’ll invite them over again
We talk it over and over…
raven
Guess no one really gave a fuck anyway.
C Nelson Reilly
The Leon Russell version of this song is good too
SatanicPanic
My favorite George Jones tune.
raven
@C Nelson Reilly: He’s playing here tomorrow!
C Nelson Reilly
@raven: He’s played here in Tulsa every April around his birthday for the past 30 years or so. 71 years old now – has to use a cane to get to the piano but can still bring it
raven
@C Nelson Reilly: This is the band I saw him with. I was ripped and somehow was able to shoot the shit with him as I leaned on the piano. They played in an old gym in Champaign with no stage!

In 1962, I wore the exact same haircut as Jones sports in that video. Me, and damn near every other little boy in the country, and at least half of all American males. Gives folks who weren’t around a better idea why the Beatles “long hair” caused such a ruckus in 1964.
A brilliant singer/songwriter, a beautiful gift he shared with the world. RIP, George.
Cris (without an H)
Now there’s a haircut you can set your watch to.
raven
It’s a flatop, what’s the big deal?
A Ghost To Most
Time to put on “George Jones Talkin Cell Phone Blues”
“You’ll be singin duets with Tammy again”
JWL
@raven: It’s no big deal, but is of some interest to 20th century anthropologists, as it pretty much disappeared from the planet after 1965 for 30 or 40 years.

And in today’s installment of “if we ban guns, murderers’ll just use hubcaps”:
http://www.kmov.com/news/local/Mother-injured-in-accidenta-204779431.html
Police say a teenager accidentally hubcapped his mother at their Oakville home Thursday evening.
The incident occurred at the woman’s home on Wickershire Lane around 7 p.m.
According to the victim’s sister-in-law, the father had a hubcap pulled out so he could add a new piece to the device.
Police said the victim’s 18-year-old son picked up the hubcap to clean it when it allegedly went off, hitting his mother in the leg.
The victim was rushed to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries….

A throwback from the days when musicians mowed grass.

His obituary in The NY Times is just amazing. What a wild life.

I have to go look up that video and see who the other guy is. What a beautiful voice.
No Jonathan Winters either . . . .
But George Jones does have a great voice too.
gogol's wife
Wow, it doesn’t say. I’m in love with that guy.

@gbear:
True! Kind of amazing that he lived to 81. I’ll miss him.
Honus
I’m still amazed that he outlived Tammy.
Honus
@raven: @JWL: Yes, and it cost an extra quarter because you had to get the flat top wax.
Tokyokie
Sorry he’s gone, but surprised he lived as long as he did.
mvr
I just knew Doug J would catch this in an appropriate way.
George Jones and Rosanne Cash along with a few others made the local country music stations the best choice on the AM radio in my VW squareback in the early 80s. Never got to see him live. Never will now.
The Other Chuck
That is a great voice, and I normally can’t stand country. Maybe it’s the artifacts of the video combined with the haircut, but am I the only one who thinks his head looks just plain weird?
I think I know why … he has an uncanny resemblance to Bert.
Bruce S
That’s a great song – one of my favorites too – but “He Stopped Loving Her Today” is ultimate Possum IMHO.

Frank Sinatra (with a characteristic dose of his own ego):
“George Jones is the second greatest singer in America.”
Jackie
I know of no George Jones that I dislike: I love “I stooped Loving her tonight.
Steeplejack
@gogol’s wife:
Don’t know if you’ll check back, but that other singer is George Riddle. He was a long-time Grand Ole Opry performer who worked with a lot of the big stars.

@Steeplejack:
THANK YOU!
