Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Random Monday Music Video Open Thread (RMMVOT for short)

I was surfing the Youtube machine for some stray tunes to accompany a global e-mail purge when I came across this bit of both very cool performance and what my son calls Old People’s Music in a true old-folks setting:

I greatly enjoy James Taylor, and Mavis Staples is the bees’ knees, and I’ll do nostalgia w. the best of them, but the true moment of ecstasy in this video comes with the sudden glimpse of Dr. Emilio Lizardo at about 3:10. Colin Powell swaying to the tune ain’t bad either.

Talk about whatever unholy intersection of disparate realities has informed your day.

The unholy intersection of disparate realities that informed my day was (First Reality Alert!) reading how some people think Google Glass* is a piffle because what we really need is a direct wire computer to brain interface and then (Second Reality Alert!) that Glass has already been hacked and rooted*.

OK, remember how we watched all the Tea Partiers in their Medicare scooters screaming about keeping government out of their Medicare?

I have had rheumatoid arthritis since 1979 and was told in 1983 that it was so severe and all that I would just have to buy the wheelchair I was renting during a flareup as I would never walk again. Didn’t listen to that and instead got a better doctor who kept me walking for years and years.

But all good things must come to an end and after a series of falls and realizing I was circumscribing my life too much, I decided to give in. I went to a store who told me that due to excess fraud, Medicare was really cracking down and would no longer cover scooters at all and were being such pills about wheelchairs that they no longer handled the claims; they recommended the Scooter Store as knowing how to get Medicare to cough up. I went ahead and bought a cheap used scooter, which has been great for running errands, but they don’t really work in a small house with small bathrooms. Power chairs are more expensive; I got one off Craigslist for a couple of hundred dollars, but the size is all wrong for me and the battery won’t hold a charge.

So I called the Scooter Store. Everything was going fine until evidently some ex-employee published a book about how they had a database of doctors who would write an RX for a chair for any old body. The FBI raided their offices and they laid off all their employees. End of my claim.

All the ads with old people in their wheelchairs and Hoverounds that used to be so ubiquitous on TV have disappeared and everywhere I look on the web suggests I just buy one myself. Sure, I have $4,000 lying around.

Frustrated. I wonder if my Representative, Darrel Issa, would help me?

Hereabouts in Sonoma, Ca., a guy who once worked for the local Safeway stole a woman’s purse in the same store (but only after first warning her: “I’m going to take your purse”). He was tackled outside the store, dropped the purse, and is now being pursued. The video of the theft indicates he was wearing the same Oakland A’s cap that he’s seen sporting on his Facebook page.

Just another poor, pathetically stupid, schmuck.

    April 29, 2013 at 7:00 pm

@Mary G: First you need to get a new Rx. Then have the doc’s office recommend who they work with because they’ll know he’s writing you a legit RX and with the right diagnoses and medical history there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to get one. A new RX should start a new claim and the other one should be dead. The company you go with should be able to look up whether the scooter store got paid for it or not. I think if you call medicare they should be able to tell you. Also you should be getting EOBs anyway so you should know pretty quick whether the Scooter Store’s claim went through already. BTW, some cities have places that people donate used medical equipment and you can rent the equipment at a super reasonable amount – $5.00-$10.00/mo.

So, here’s an interesting test of where we are. Will Jason Broussard still be employed next week?

“Personally, I don’t believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle or an openly, like premarital sex between heterosexuals,” Broussard said on ESPN’s Outside The Lines. “If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says you know them by their fruits. It says that, you know, that’s a sin. If you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, whatever it maybe, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ. So I would not characterize that person as a Christian because I don’t think the bible would characterize them as a Christian.”

The test is whether a sportswriter/sportscaster judging a player for his sexual orientation will rise to the same sort of standard that has gotten countless sportswriters/sportscasters fired for the same judgement regarding a player’s race.

I’m sure if he is fired, we’ll get endless histrionics over religious persecution. I’m skeptical that it is yet a firing offense, but it should be as this is part of the reason why so few athletes have ever publicly come out before. Certainly nobody in the MLB/NFL/NBA.

And FWIW, what the fuck does it matter what his religion believes about Collins’ sexuality when it obviously has nothing whatsoever to do with his on-court performance. Broussard should be fired, but, as mentioned above, that would only elevate his status in the persecuted talibangelical community.

    Pathetic is what he is.

Also those suits holding up lighters creeps me out. I remember smoking pot to this song back when listening to rock was, at least for some people, a politica statement. I wish the mainstreaming of songs like this meant that more counter culture ideas were on the ascendency, but, instead, we are in a new Robber Baron age, probably at the end, just before voting restrictions, gerrymandering and corporate citizenship turns us into the pretense of a representative democracy.

Just learned today that I need cataract surgery. Not a total surprise, and it could certainly be a lot worse, but I’m apprehensive. Somebody want to hold my hand for a minute, say “There, there,” and help me feel a little more okay about this? Has anyone here, or someone close to them, gone through the procedure?

(It won’t happen until July anyhow — I’m traveling too much between now and the end of June to be reliable for all the follow-up visits. So I have a couple of months to work myself up into full-blow panic.)

I will say that the new Star Wars movies have me worried, mainly because there’s a lot of good EU stuff out there already, and the next movie is going off an original script – which I think means they are going to absolutely blow up a ton of the EU shit once it’s published.

I feel like the purist fans would’ve been happy if Han always shot first (which HE DID) and if the first trilogy was the only one made (which I’m not; yes, Lucas sucked ass at directing the prequels, but I’m glad they were made nonetheless).

@SiubhanDuinne: My grandmother had the surgery a few years ago. She had almost perfect distance vision following the surgery; she had been nearly blind before it. She had no problems and no regrets about doing it.

Re: unholy intersection of disparate realities

Didn’t inform my day, but it stuck with me. Just a few years ago when the local Home Depot was briefly open 24 hours a day, I was there pretty late at night and the store was playing “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane. And I swear I wasn’t tripping!

While any surgery carries some risk (duh!) the risks with professionally done modern cataract procedures are quite small. Ask your eye clinic (or whatever provider you are using) if they provide contacts of patients who have had the same procedure done there (or perhaps they have a ‘review’ section on their website).

If you’re going for an outpatient laser procedure, can be in, have it done, and back home within an afternoon.

Also too, if you are still skittish about it, can opt to have just one eye done to see how it suits you.

@SiubhanDuinne: I do have to say that it freaked me out a bit. She had glasses since before I was born, so it always seemed weird to see her without them. I adjusted eventually.

Second-hand detail eye stuff. When my aunt had it (went entirely well), they wanted her to have / strongly suggested she have some other work done at the same time which did slow recovery time down. Also because she wore glasses before, there was a period while her eyes were readjusting and she couldn’t get new prescriptions yet. Still, end result, fine.

    @NotMax:

That’s a great idea, to check with former patients.

I am having only the left eye done. For some reason, it has “ripened” at a much faster rate than the right eye. I expect to continue to wear glasses, but as I’ve never been without them since age 6 (I am now almost 71) this will not be a major adjustment for either me or Omnes.

She comes across as worthy, pleasant, dull, sensible, and highly competent. Certainly less wingnutty than Sanford, but that bar is set pretty high.

Sanford blathered about taxes, unions, Pelosi and the Congress of 1994. Living in the past is one thing, but he is campaigning in the past. It’s like he’s trying to win the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2012.

@SiubhanDuinne: I had catarract surgery. It was out patient with a pleasant medication that put me in a good mood. Other than going to bed earlier than usual, I had no bad effects. Really, it was no big deal. I’d rather have another surgery like that than get another root canal. Or a filing, for that matter.

So don’t get too stressed about it!
