This lovely individual above is Heritage Foundation scholar Jason Richwine. He’s co-author of the controversial study that argues an immigration overhaul would cost taxpayers $6.3 trillion. Lovely dude also happens to be the man who published a dissertation decrying immigration because Hispanics just aren’t as bright as White people.
The average IQ of immigrants in the United States is substantially lower than that of the white native population, and the difference is likely to persist over several generations – Jason Richwine
Yeah! The White native population will have to deal with stupid brown people! That’s so not cool! Let the White native population be great! Or as TWiB’s resident fire starter Imani Gandy put it:
Call me crazy, but for a party that needs brown people to like them well enough to vote for them, it seems to me that calling Hispanics stupid is exactly the wrong way to go about it. The GOP should be deploying the friendliest among them to stand on the border, arms raised up with a boom-box blaring “In Your Eyes,” not calling brown folks a bunch of stoopid-heads. — ‘Hispanic Immigrants Be Stupid — But Vote GOP!’
On today’s #TWiBRadio we discussed the Heritage Foundation’s new problematic scholar, exposing the disparity in hospital pricing, and why does the U.S. allow food practices that the UK has banned? Listen here:

In 20 years they’ll be claiming that they were the ones who initiated marriage equality and immigration reform and the Dimmorat liebruls were the real anti-gay racists because marriage equality is conservative and Hispanics are a naturally conservative demographic.

@GregB: thanks to them and climate change, in 20 years the coastal elites will be in kansas

They really can’t help themselves. Or rather, there are enough of them who can’t help themselves that they can’t escape from the lingering stench of bigotry.
Mnemosyne
I see some folks have never heard of the Flynn effect. IQ is not the immutable standard he seems to think it is.
quannlace
But of course. Everybody knows white people spontaneously sprung to life upon this land, like Boticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus.’

Jason Richwine – the GOP’s Hispanic outreach spokesperson.
I will try to forget this blithering idiot, but he actually does represent an important Republican demographic, the poor white racists.
Bruce S
I happen to be a big fan of Jason Richwine because I support any and every effort by the GOPers to commit political suicide. I’ll pitch in with my Chevron card if Mr. Richwine would like some additional gasoline to pour on his fire.
Go Jason!
Omnes Omnibus
Pace toko-loco, but IQ tests really aren’t all that meaningful.

Republicans are not too bright. Not surprised at all that their racism is coming through loud and clear even though it’s going to be their death knell.
Demographics aren’t trending in their favor, but they just can’t let go of their White privilege.
Calming Influence
Even if I could make a million dollars a day teaching Republicans to recognize irony, I still wouldn’t do it, because that would be wrong.
Spaghetti Lee
Nice suit. Seems like it’s always the nastiest people who have the nicest suits.
Bruce S
Okay, so some GOPer fucktard is a racist. Color me shocked – retrograde horseshit at Heritage, gambling in Casablanca and all of that.
But you know what’s REALLY creepy about this? As I read the NYTs report on Richwine, that sick-fuck dissertation he wrote got him a doctorate in public policy from Harvard.
I guess I’m naive even at this late date and after all of those terminal bouts of cynicism, but there it is. This piece of shit is parading around with a Harvard doctorate for all of his efforts to Bell Curve Hispanics. Fuck him and fuck Harvard.
mclaren
Gotta love the bogus numbers these racist cranks cook up. Why stop at 6.3 trillion? Why not 57 gazillion dollars? Heck, go for it and scream “Illegal immigrants will cost America 194 GABILLION FEZILLION WHIZILLION DOLLARS over the next decade!”
Purity of essence, babe. These guys respect the immigrant but will not share their essence with them.

“Native” You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

What’s that most useful German word…oh yes:
backpfeifengesicht – a face that cries out for a fist in it.
Judging by the picture, Jason Richwine is essence de douche personified.
Also, too – why the FUCK is there an ad banner for Liberty University on the front page?
dewzke
I can’t even comment much now…this is disgusting.

I think immigrants add diversity and energy to the nation. The self selecting mechanism of immigrating choose people who are willing to let go of everything and take a leap of faith that immigrating to America will give them and their children a better future. As far the IQ test just exposing children to more graphic and written material increases their IQ without actually increasing their intelligence. To check me on this just see who are working on their Phd in science.
beltane
@tofudog: Yep. IQ tests in English were administered to Yiddish speaking arrivals at Ellis Island, and these tests proved conclusively that Eastern European Jews were intellectually impaired. I guess we can give the nativist right some points for consistency here.

I didn’t know that there was a ‘Hispanics are genetically dumb’ school of bigotry running around. Seems like it’s slicing the bigotry baloney a little too thin.
Hispanics have mostly an ancestral mix of European white people and Native American. And Native American are very closely related to East Asians, ancestrally and genetically speaking (very closely, population genetic wise, I think).
So, using the standard BS bigotry baloney calculus, Hispanics should be smarter than whitey white smarty pants types? Right?
Where did I go wrong? Someone help me out here, please?

You just can’t expect bigots to be intellectually consistent. Well, I guess you can expect them to be, but you’re going to be disappointed time and again. Well, well, well, seems Jason Richwine also believes teachers are paid more than they would be in the private sector.
He also apparently has a history at AEI. Typical wingnut grifter.
El Cid
How come you libruls are trying to make Richwine’s race-based arguments look like they’re about race?
Y’all want to play the race card all the time, even trying to make it seem like a white guy bringing in race and how people of one race are smarter than another race is somehow about race.
danielx
@Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS):
Color me surprised.
Of course teachers are overpaid for what they do. Unlike “visiting scholars” at AEI, who are paid six figures for producing propaganda while waiting for the next Republican administration to arrive – so it can be proven, once again, that conservative theory is more important than outcomes.
maimati
Jason has a Harvard PhD with this poop? I have a PhD and if Harvard is okay with these kinds of totally subjective “findings” my Gawd the place should be closed down or at least whatever department he was in. Total bullbompers. A disgrace just alone from the standpoint of research methodology never mind the morality.
I’m in moderation for the first time for who knows what. So I have made kiddie terms instead. Who’s the 17th century Puritan minding this site?

Hey! This guy got a Phd from Harvard for that.

As I recall the immigration laws enacted in the 1920’s were to keep out all those stupid Eastern and Southern Europeans (fill in ethnic slurs here), the stupidest of them being the Polish and Russian Jews, which is why 20 some years later Ivy League schools established Gentleman’s Agreements to prevent the stupid Jewish children from elbowing out legacy geniuses like family Bush.
Just sayin’
Another Halocene Human
Since Richwine is a tag on this thread, seems like an appropriate thread to mention VD Hanson’s white supremacist credentials. Sadly, No! has been calling him out for years. He is the button-down kind of white supremacist who thinks white culture is superior and white supremacy is a good thing and self-evidently in [white] America’s self-interest.
Sorry about the delay but I can’t really pull off complicated stuff with my low-end smart phone.

“white native population”
Seriously? He’s talking about America and he’s a scholar? Damn.
Tom_B
Poor hispanics come in to do sub-mimimum wage jobs native-born Americans won’t touch. Most economists will tell you that doing these jobs AND paying sales taxes results in a modest net gain to the US economy. The diabolic part of “immigration reform” is the push to grant more H1B visas– to bring in science/engineering people at third world scale, displacing thousands of MORE qualified US citizens– our schools may well be mediocre on average, but our engineering schools continue to be the envy of the rest of the world. MSFT and others lobby for this odious practice, which damages their own brand by diminishing the quality and finish of their products.

@tofudog:
“Did you know that “low IQ” was the exact same reason people gave 100 years ago for limiting Jewish immigration? ”
It couldn’t be, because the grandchildren of that group are all high-IQ-ers who demonstrate the heritability of IQ or somesuch.
Baud
Sarah Palin sure blew Richwine’s thesis out of the water, didn’t she?
Suffern ACE
@BArry: I don’t know. Didn’t Bill Kristol graduate from Harvard and isn’t he known to be wrong about everything? It’s possible that he drags down the whole average and we haven’t even gotten to Paul wolfowitz.

Looks like Hahvad is gunning for all them Liberty U. accolades. Seriously though, what kind of PhD defense did this clown have to go though? Or did they just let it slide because of a snow day?
RepubAnon
I think it’s more wishful thinking on the Republican’s part. After all, anyone making less than 7 figures annually that votes Republican is really stupid. So, Republicans know that they have the stupid vote locked up. Thus, their only hope of getting Hispanics to vote Republican is if the Hispanics become really stupid.

I have a question on the OP. It blockquotes Jason Richwine as follows:
but I don’t see a link to a source for that quote. Usually when you blockquote someone, you provide the link to where that text is coming from. Maybe I’m just missing it.

@parsimon:
I think Elon got it from ABL’s (aka Imani Gandy) post at This Week in Blackness, which quotes it from Richwine’s dissertation.
That last link takes you to the abstract, where you can order a copy. Be my guest; I’ve got better things to do with $39.
daveNYC
Um, who was this guy’s advisor during his PhD? I’m a little iffy on the specifics of getting a PhD, but I’m pretty sure it involves picking out a topic of study with a senior faculty or working with some other researcher? Which would mean that someone at Harvard made the call that determining that brown people are stupider than white peeps was a good idea.
And then Harvard grants him a PhD based on the work.
Seriously, what department did he get this from, and what the hell is wrong with them?
The only plus side is that all this racist crap has moved beyond the dog whistle stage and is now in full bull horn and signal flare mode. If these guys had any brains or self awareness, they’d just say native vs. immigrant populations and they’d have just enough deniability to say ‘nuh-uh, totally not racist’. At least this way their ‘white good, brown bad’ crap is in plain view.

Well, Latinos aren’t stupid enough to vote Republican.

@Mnemosyne:
He does mention the Flynn effect, that IQs rise over time, but he disregards it. Christopher Jencks, a liberal, was on the thesis committee. He or someone else kept slapping Richwine on the knuckles about ignoring phenomena like Flynn, so those hard to reconcile facts get an occasional mention before they are dismissed out of hand.
