Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

We will not go back.

In my day, never was longer.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

The revolution will be supervised.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

NHL, Game of Thrones, Mad Men

Sounds like a setup for a Carnac the Magnificent joke that I don’t know the punchline to.

    Oh well…

So you asked why hockey isn’t so popular. I had the TV on for a few minutes this afternoon. Some other hockey game was on (announcer said it was Boston v NY). Sports announcer guy was down on the ice interviewing a player. His name was Fabrice and he spoke with a French accent. You think Real Murkins are going to go for some sport where the players speak French and are called Fabrice? Not so sure about that.

Cole, I share your love of hockey. I didn’t grow up with the sport, I didn’t play the sport, but so fucking what. I love it. The intensity of playoff hockey is like nothing else. I’m a Kings fan, have been since 1969. When they hoisted the cup last season it was as if all the bad years were washed away. I hope the Kings meet the Pens in the final for Lord Stanley’s cup. If that happens, and the Kings lose, have a Scotch to a worthy opponent, and wait ’til next year!

Hockey? Well, in the worst most godforsaken shithole in America you can still play baseball, or football, or basketball within a short distance from where you live. Ice hockey not so much.

You have that right. Hockey is played well in USA in places like Minnesota and Massachusetts—colleges like Michigan, Harvard, and the Air Force Acedemy—internationally in places like Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. No godforsaken shitholes on those lists.

This possibly explains why the broadcasts are sponsored by companies like Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. Or why hockey players are EASILY the best-educated, most multilingual athletes on earth.

I’m finishing up the weekend work that I stupidly left all for today.

Just did a circuit board layout for a new freelance electronics article project. 30mm X 30mm board has one IC chip, 4 capacitors, 6 resistors, three jumpers and 9 offboard wires crammed in. I think I can build this. I don’t know if I can describe to anyone else how to build it.

Street hockey is always available, any time of year, any climate.

So is hoseball, all of the equipment for which (garden hose cut into three inch segments for the ball, broomstick or mop handle for the bat) can be easily stolen. The game can be played in any parking lot or alley. Although hoseball was around in the early Fifties (When I played it) I have yet to see a hoseball league, let alone televised games.

Not just a visa, but a written invitation from a Russian resident citizen or company. Usually for tourists this is from your hotel or tour company, but I was staying with a friend of a friend. The process for an individual to invite an American is long and expensive; I paid a tour company to issue an invitation saying I was staying at a hotel I never saw the outside of. This was for Moscow; I think you couldn’t do that for Vladivostok.

Swedish Rap if I’m not entirely mistaken. And here’s a bit on one of those entirely non-existent unpossible slums in, of all places, Malmö of Eurovision fame. From 2009 or 2012 or both, but basically, while the depths may differ, doesn’t mean they’re not deep. Lots of issues with immigrants in Norway and Sweden.

Bits of Malmö I saw were grand, so it’s not to entirely disparage the town. Coincidentally, I was staying there with former political refugees from Communist era Czechoslovakia and they told me being a non-Swede in 1968 and on was hard work with a lot of discrimination so it’s not entirely a new thing either. They never talked with me about wanting to go back to the Czech Republic though.

    Two things —

    1) – If you possess Roku/HBOGO/Season 1 of GoT go and watch it now. Not the whole thing start-to-finish but those bits that matter. Such as the King and Ned, Cersei and whomever, anything with Tyrion.

    2) – If you have not read the books or been asleep for three years, well, The Lord of Light asks you to pay attention.

    @efgoldman:

Yeah, it’s gotta be all Radio Shack parts, which is a bit limiting. Good news is that MAKE Magazine and Radio Shack will be co-branding kits, books and tools starting late 2013 so it will be easier for people to read something, buy it and build it.

I’d still like to do a vacuum tube project for MAKE. I have a few ideas percolating in my head for this. We’ll see if any of them ends up looking practical enough to be worthwhile for readers rather than just a novelty.
