After the Sharks loss to the Kings, I got sucked into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction on HBO. Saw Public Enemy get in, now Rush. At any rate, what is up with Neil Peart’s nose? It’s almost painful to look at, like a bulbous and swollen and pock marked bruise of a growth with the purplish color of severe thunder storm clouds. It’s almost as if someone stuck a plum or corn smut on his schnozz and he hasn’t noticed.
But sweet jeebus, the man can still drum.

I have it, and it sucks. The only thing that works to keep it under control is Noritate — all of the “metro” formulations make me break out. I was diagnosed with it at 19, which used to be uncommon, but they finally realized that a fair number of “teenage acne” cases were actually rosacea.
If you have persistent redness and acne on your cheeks and nose that won’t go away with regular acne medication, then you probably have rosacea.

It used to be thought to be linked to alcohol because it was often seen in alcoholics, but it turned out that it was showing up in alcoholics who had untreated rosacea, which is made worse by alcohol. IOW, it was a side effect of the rosacea, not a side effect of the alcohol itself.

Noritate actually has the same active ingredient as the “metro” formulations (metronidazole) but there’s something about the base ingredients that are far less irritating to my skin than the generics.
Gentle cleansers and moisturizers (I use Ilike) and 45 SPF sunscreen every. single. day. helps prevent flare-ups a whole lot, too. Plus wearing sunscreen every day since age 19 means I look younger than my actual age of 43, so at least I have that unexpected bonus.

Rosacea is still pretty unknown unless you have it (or know someone who has it) and for years they did think that the rhinophyma was due to alcoholism, so no biggie.
Alcohol definitely makes flare-ups worse, so chronic alcoholics are more likely to have really dramatic, public cases of rosacea (like W.C. Fields), so that’s probably why you were able to make the connection.
Two other famous people with rhinophyma: Bill Clinton and Prince Charles.

This is going to sound crazy, but find a good facialist who knows how to deal with rosacea. If you were in the San Fernando Valley, I would tell you to see Alison at Tuscany Skin Spa in Montrose (north Glendale). An experienced facialist can tell you some good cleansers to try that can really reduce irritation. If your dermatologist has any samples of Noritate, see if you can score a few to try out.
Rosacea is weird because a lot of the things other people find “non-irritating,” like Cetaphil, are HELLA irritating to my skin. I used to have the world’s most wonderful face cleanser, which was a five-ingredient cleanser they gave people after getting things like a facial peel (ie a medical chemical burn) but the company got bought out and they stopped making it, so I went back to the Ilike cleanser. It’s stupid expensive, but if it keeps my skin from turning bright red, it’s worth it to me.

@Mnemosyne: I am ultra-pallid and have been using 45+SPF for years, up until about two months ago when I got a horrible case of poison oak which somehow lit up my immune system, and that made me have an allergic reaction to my sunscreen. So in addition to the rash all over my arms and legs, I turned bright red and scaly all over my face and neck. And it still hasn’t completely resolved, so I am wearing long sleeves, a bandana, and big sunhats. This is not an attractive look. I used to be kinda happy that my skin looked younger than my actual age, but now it doesn’t look either old or young, just gross. And I have a big nose. This makes me grumpy as hell, so anyone who gets tired of being in the increasingly harsh and debilitating sun and wants to use my nose-shadow and hat-shadow for relief, be prepared to pay me some cash money for the privilege.

@Mnemosyne: Metro didn’t do much for me either, nowadays I am getting better results from a fairly new ointment, Finacea (azelaic acid 15%). The insert said they don’t know the mechanism, but that it had been shown to help rosacea in clinical trials. Seems to help my case.

Ya know, it’s funny, but I was just never that into Pink Floyd when I was younger. I had a tape of The Wall that I wore out in 9th grade (iirc, it was released the year I began high school), and I got into the Syd Barrett era Floyd stuff just as I was graduating HS, but I didn’t get into the really good shit (Meddle through The Wall) until some time in the past 10 years or so. Sorry, Neal Peart is the most ludicrously overrated drummer/percussionist of all time, all he does is play way too many notes (yes, drummers play notes) on way too many instruments. My high school band teacher attended the Eastman School of Music with legendary drummer Steve Gadd. Mr. W. told us that Gadd passed his senior concert (equivalent to the senior thesis in non- music disciplines) using only a high-hat. Now that’s drumming.
