Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Republicans in disarray!

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

A consequence of cucumbers

Consistently wrong since 2002

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Ah, the different things are different argument.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

No Justins, No Peace

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

I know nothing about any of the Tahitian players other than the fact that the only full time professional in the squad is Marama Vahirua. So if it’s underdogs you’re looking to pull for, now is your chance.

I find it fascinating Tahiti has a team at all. I figured they just followed Australia or New Zealand or something. Just on the basis of their existence Go Tahiti!

I am surprised Nigeria managed to field a team, what with the country being entirely composed of the suddenly wealthy wives of deceased Treasury ministers and all.

Representing Africa and Oceania respectively, right? The latter are the ones who get thumped by rugby scores in the World Cup qualifiers, is all I know about them. This could be painful.

Tahiti had the first on-target shot at goal. Moral victory for them. But then Nigeria score with their first shot. Match victory for them, I’m thinking.
ETA: An own goal by Tahiti’s Nicolas Vallar. So Tahiti can proudly say they opened the scoring tonight.

Tahiti’s manager has realistic goals: he’d like to have one half (out of six before they go home) in which they don’t concede a goal.

So, in the CA budget (passed early) they’ve expanded the state Medicaid system into alignment with ACA and restored most of the dental benefits for Medicaid patients (was cut in the 2009 budget). So, almost all dental care (cavities, crowns, bridge work) is back on.

That’ll help on the jobs front too. Overall it will expand medical/dental care for about 9 million people.

New Zealand did win OFC World Cup qualifying, which means that have a home-and-home at the end of the year against the fourth-place team in CONCACAF (likely either Honduras or Panama) to get to Brazil 2014.

Still boasting his trademark lithe and fleet-of-foot high-energy style, the striker will provide valuable guile and experience in the Tahiti side.

@? Martin: Political Animal has an item on changing the ACA to include religiously sponsored insurance plans, and that all the main religious groups are in favor of it, and most of them are heavily GOP leaning. I think that the clergy will benefit if they are thrown into the general exchanges, but the religiously sponsored insurance companies are not.

I also think those insurance companies will have a hard time paying for contraceptive care and such.

Fixing the omission would be bad in my view.

Down nil-three at halftime. At least Tahiti didn’t park the bus in front of goal. Better finishing (and better luck) might have resulted in a smaller deficit.

@Yatsuno: He said he would do it if we could afford it. We’re definitely on track for it. I think the high speed rail needs to get rolling (cleared another hurdle last week) – that’s a pretty huge financial commitment to the state, and the unemployment rates needs to get down more before anyone concludes that the current revenue projections are stable. There’s still a HUGE bill due to education in the state, and there is a public salary equity issue still to contend with. So, there’s a lot of big commitments the state still can’t meet. But the legislature has passed it before (Arnold vetoed) so assuming things keep improving, we should get there before long.

Sure. What would a Christian Science policy look like? Or a Scientology one? That’s the problem with acceding to moral opposition based on religion – there’s no end to it without discriminating against some religions, which was the whole point of the first amendment. They recognized that it was a trap that they couldn’t afford to fall into. Hopefully Congress can muster up the same wisdom.

I’ve been to that stadium where this is taking place in Belo Horizonte a couple of times: once to see a Minas Derby where my beloved Cruzeiro beat Atletico Mineiro and once to see Atletico get pasted 3-1 by Corinthians, with Corinthians down to 10 men. Poor finishing was the only thing that kept the score from being 8-1.

The stadium was nice then. I’m curious to see how the renovation improved it.

Tahiti have now scored three goals tonight. (Two of them were own goals in favour of Nigeria.) Whereas Nigeria have scored only two. So Tahiti can claim to have outscored a national side with a much higher FIFA ranking.

@Yatsuno: Actually, Australia withdrew from Oceana to play in Asia, a few rounds ago. That’s why New Zealand is almost always the representative for the World Cup, both M and F.

Nigeria struggled more than any 6-1 winning side should have to. It does not bode well for them.

@scav: Yes, it’s more entertaining than the scoreline indicates. Tahiti weren’t just sitting back waiting to minimize the damage, but picking spots nicely.
