Never done meth or heroin or crack myself, but I hear they are very addictive, which is one reason (among many others- I don’t want to die, don’t want to use needles for anything other than blood tests, I’ve seen meth mouth, I’ve watched the Wire, and so on), but this fucking True Blood is seriously like crack rock.

And you know what? I never, ever, ever thought Anna Paquin was hot. And by hot, I mean by Hollywood standards, not my own personal standards. I’d see pictures of her and think compared to most starlets, she is kind of “meh.” But with each and every episode, she gets more and more attractive.

Now Tara on the other hand, RAWWWR.

Is Jason Stackhouse not the dumbest character to ever have existed in the world of fiction? He makes Frito Pendejo look like a Rhodes Scholar.

O.K. let’s play hypothetical. Say your boss is Aaron Hernandez and he shoots you one night. Why on earth would you not tell the police? Would you think “hey, maybe he’ll let me keep my job? He’s an otherwise good boss except for the shooting?”

I am pretty sure, on this very blog, that I described True Blood in the same manner years ago.

I drifted away after season 4 I think. But man, season 1 was television crack for sure. HOT SUMMER FUN. Like a good beach read*

*if by good beach read you mean hot sweaty erotica, which I do.

It’s all about the make-up and the lighting. Sometimes plastic surgery, but mostly make-up and lighting.

@BillinGlendaleCA: In this case. I’d say it’s a stylist helping it all along as Paquin goes from “little gal with no sex appeal” to a young woman who goes for it. Unless she wants character actor roles. Make-up and lighting help, of course, too.

It’s all about the make-up and the lighting.

    Plus general bearing.

Good example is Lenora Crichlow’s ghost character (ex. 1 – ex. 2 in the British (original) Being Human*, all the more impressive as she is essentially stuck in the same blah, gray outfit for eternity.

Seasons 1&2 highly, highly recommended. Season 3 reluctantly recommended. Seasons 4&5, probably best skipped.

I never, ever, ever thought Anna Paquin was hot.

My problem is that I’m old enough to remember her in The Piano and that movie about teaching the geese to migrate, whatever that was?

Whenever I start thinking about her in “that way” it’s like thinking about one of my daughter’s friends that I’ve known since they were all running around in diapers. (Insert descending slide whistle.)

An update on the haze situation. The worst effects are still concentrated in S’pore, and Johore state at the southern tip of the peninsula. There, the air would feel and smell as though you were walking through the smoke from burning garden refuse. The 200 or so schools closed by the Ministry of Education, as reported by the BBC and others, are all in Johore. The sky here in KL — a few hundred Km to the north — looks overcast, but the air still feels breathable.

The mutual fingerpointing is still going on: Malaysians and Singaporeans blame Indonesia for not policing its environment, Indonesians blame the Malaysian and Singaporean corporations that own all the big plantations in Southeast Asia. Given the relatively small footprint of the haze this time, it seems that there isn’t the vast acreage of forest in flames over in Sumatra that there was in Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) back in the great haze of 1997-98. So there’s progress in that regard at least.

I hear they are very addictive
Meh. Alcohol is the dependency where withdrawal can be lethal.
Nicotine withdrawal will fuck you up and the dependency starts quickly.
Opiates… it takes a while to get dependent, but it’s not much fun when you stop.
Amphetamines… hardly addictive at all in terms of physiological dependency; it’s just that you don’t want to give it up.

Or so I hear from a friend.

@Chris: Fly Away Home is the only thing I know Anna Paquin from. I watched that movie as a dad of a daughter about the same age, and it absolutely destroys me every time.

She and Jeff Daniels did another movie a few years later which I didn’t see. He’s a professor and she’s the student he has an affair with. In interviews they both said “What? We’re actors. It’s not like she’s actually his daughter.” But I’m still too squicked out about it to watch.

I have watched the entire series, because I am a television masochist, and the new episodes keep giving me new reasons to say this show is among the dumbest shows I have ever seen, and I watched the entirety of Britney and Kevin: Chaotic. Do yourself a favor and quit after three. Season four and beyond you watch at your own peril.

Having been foolish enough to watch 5 seasons back-to-back and being too OCD to stop myself when the show jumped several different sharks each week I am not a fan.

But I will say that once they finally realised they were just making Carry On Buffay the Vampire Layer and started playing up the comedy it almost redeemed itself (‘you drained the whole fairy – go to your room!’ the sublime Teenage Dream sequence with Russell the Reverend and a house-full of drained fratboys, pretty much anything Jason or Pam ever does or says….).

@Keith: I started out liking Tara but found her more and more annoying til season 5 when they finally worked out a clever way to save her character.

And yes bizarre that the woman from Las Vegas who must have grown up amidst every US accent going has a far worse Louisiana accent than the Brit, the Canadian, the Australian (I won’t count The Swede as he’s not even trying).

Season 5, for me, was very meh, but I really liked 1-4. 6 seems to be off to a good start, but I think they changed show-runners (from what I’ve heard) so that may have something to do with it. We’ll see on Sunday if the “promise” of Season 6 continues or goes into crash-and-burn mode.

What I like about True Blood is that it has a little something for everyone (well, if you define “something” as being blatant sex and overt nudity, etc.) : it’s a family viewing tradition here chez nous: I can leer at appreciate the exhibited pulchritude (Anna, Rutina, all those hot naked werewolf girls), while Mrs. Jay can slaver over admire the prime beef on display: every episode we view generates a debate on who’s sexier: Alexander Skarsgard, or the (astonishingly buff) Joe Manganiello. So far, the answer has turned out to be “both”….

    @mouse tolliver:

If Sam turned into a chicken, could he lay his own eggs[?]

Of course not, dumbass: cause he’d be a rooster…..
