Obviously, I wish the Pens were in the big show, but this has been a super awesome final so far. Three out of four games going into OT? Just excellent and free hockey, to boot.
Now that the series is even, and we are basically in a best of three, I expect the next two periods to be awesome.
Mr Stagger Lee
A pretty good series I agree. The NBA Finals ended on a good games 6 and 7, wanted the Spurs to win, but I’m not mad.
Infamous Heel-Filcher
This is fucking entertaining hockey. I suppose I’d slightly rather Boston win, but it’s not all that important to me… but goddamn if the quality of the play hasn’t had me coming back for more every game.

Repeat from other thread:
Can I just try to express how damn happy I am that this has been such a great Stanley Cup final so far? Two great teams, two great cities, no stupid controversies, no dirty play, no trash talk, tight games, skill, great goaltending, great goals, etc. etc.
This post, of course, has absolutely nothing to do that I am +1 Singapore Sling and will shortly be +2.
Dexter's new approach
Refs letting it go out there. Favors the Bruins, but the Hawks are fighting back, so I’m fine with a hands-off game so far. .

Yeah, I don’t care about all this stuff, so OT, but happy b-day and I wanted to thank you for this old post that I could never find but happened upon today:

Well I hate the Bruins and loathe the Hawks, but the series has been pretty cool so far. But Boston might want to consider putting a body on Patrick Kane afore he up an’ wins the Cup all by his lonesome.

@Mr Stagger Lee:
Not mad either, mostly just bummed at the way the let that 5th ring slip right off their finger in game 6. Some questionable personnel decisions by Pop.

Apparently Doc Emrick thinks Tuukka is a painter: he’s used a form of “art” twice to describe his saves.

@efgoldman: I guess. Very good play-by-play man, which is saying something nowadays.
I grew up with Fred Cusick and Bob Wilson. Very few people can follow those two.

Another thing I’m loving about this series: both teams have a lot of talent, but they’re both willing to do the tough, dirty work as well. There’s lots of digging, there’s no lazy play.
Hawks were looking like the better team through two, but B’s have clearly taken the play in the third.

WTF? Why can’t I post a normal comment? Am I in the filter or something?

Feels like it’s only a matter of time for the next Boston goal, but this is hockey, and it frequently doesn’t work that way.

@efgoldman: “We” are slightly older than I am, but indeed we are both “old”.
When I was five, my older cousin (who was more like an uncle) said, “See that guy wearing number 4? Watch him.” I was hooked.
Mother’s Day 1970 I was on a stage playing one of the King’s children in a local production of “The King and I”. The curtain came down, the stage manager came out and said, “They won!”, we all started jumping up and down, the curtain started going up for curtain call, we composed ourselves, took our bows, and then all started jumping up and down again.
(To be contiued, because I gotta watch the end of this game)

1974: It’s game six against the Flyers and I’m at a funeral. The funeral home has set up a TV in the parlor so we can keep tabs on the game. The B’s are about to lose the cup, and I say to my cousin, “But don’t the Bruins always win?” He laughs and says, no.
Funny the way a child sees the world, no?

Both teams only have one line that is scoring and dangerous. Were Hossa healthy, Hawks would have distinct edge.

@efgoldman:
Lucky you: I never saw a Bruins cup with my own eyes until two years ago.
U kiddin? That was great hockey, even if it didn’t end the way we wanted it to.
Two years ago at this time Luongo was trash talking Thomas. Tonight Crawford talks about a hard fought win and gives the B’s props. Hockey gods are harsh — they hate mouthy hockey teams, and could not abide a Canucks cup after that. I’m with the gods: respect for a good, hard working team.

So my completely unprofessional analysis is the Bruins are now, suddenly, in big trouble. How fast the worm can turn, on such little.
different-church-lady
Dear Boston media: every Bruins loss is not a “heart breaker.” A heart breaker is when you’re up three goals and lose the lead. A heart breaker is when you give up two goals in the last two minutes. A heart breaker is NOT when you just get slightly outplayed most of the game.
drkrick
@The prophet Nostradumbass: that’s going to be tough to top.
different-church-lady
@Redshirt: Back in the day, a one game lead in a series was no reason to consider either team in big trouble.
For people of a certain age, we can only shake our heads at the artificial wild mood swings our descendants must apply to every situation.
Redshirt
@different-church-lady: In game 6? Seems like a precarious position, especially given how this series has gone so far – it’s dang close. And in a close game, even the team that played better can lose. All it takes is a lucky break or two.
different-church-lady
@efgoldman: That’s not a heart breaker — that’s a heart stopper.
Honestly, I’m more worried about Bergeron himself than what it means to the team. I’m hoping it’s just something like dehydration or an extreme stomach bug. I’m afraid that it’s something heart related.
different-church-lady
@Redshirt: But that’s the very nature of a game 5 in a tied series — one team is going to be pushed to the brink. But it’s far from unheard of to win two in a row. Edge Chicago. Big trouble? More like a hard row to hoe.

@different-church-lady: Your words are wise, but I still think it’s time to panic, rend garments, and pace in circles, mumbling ancient lucky koans.

Wildly different subject from the top.
I’m up for one of the slots on Felicia Day/Geek & Sundry’s new YouTube channel Geek & Sundry Vlogs. There’s a public vote going on right now that’s really a cover for market research. The producers are going to weigh the YouTube comments/feedback heavily in deciding who makes the Top 30 in the contest.
My pitch is for a vlog called Slipstream: The Pulp Culture Vlog. I cover horror, sci-fi, and fantasy across all the different entertainment media. It’s all about how the three genres interact with each other to reflect on society. I have future episodes planned on the scariest songs ever written for musical theater, 19th century sci-fi and fantasy illustrations, and dark riffs on the Wizard of Oz in film.
If it sounds interesting at all, I’d appreciate your votes and feedback on the entry. You can watch the video and vote here, then click through to comment on the YouTube video itself. The Geek & Sundry people want to know what you think of the topic, what you think of my presentation, and what kind of subjects you want covered in future episodes. You can vote every day through Thursday, June 27.

Tell me about it. I was at one of the NBA Championship games against the Lakers in ’85. (Dad’s office had a busload of tickets, and a bus. )
Anyway, it was hot. Very hot. But fun to see a win.

@efgoldman: He’s still kickin’, just not for CBC. As for Donald S. Cherry, I’ve grown fond of the old coot. Loud of mouth and suit? Yes, absolutely. Racist, sexist, and homophobic? Check, check, and double check. Hates European players, you betcha. But, damn, the man knows, and loves the Game. And somehow, that’s enough for me to be able to tune out that other shit. And Mrs.nineone gets a big kick out his “wardrobe”. Also, too. If Patrice can’t come back it’s big, big trouble for the B’s.
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): I have very fond memories of Dave Strader, as he was the Red Wings announcer back in the 90’s. Never tries to be bigger than the moment.
Ash Can
@different-church-lady: Bergeron played in the first period and was pretty obviously stiff. He was skating as though he had a lower-back muscle injury of some kind. My guess is that he needed some sort of intramuscular injection that the trainer’s room at the Stadium — er, United Center — couldn’t handle, and that’s why he was taken to a hospital. Back muscle spasms can be thoroughly debilitating at the time, but with the right treatment can heal quickly.

@different-church-lady: One would think. It should be rather obvious. I blame Al Michaels. And Obama, of course.
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): In the 80’s they were the Dead Things to me. Didn’t start following them until Fedorov mysteriously showed up (Ha! Take that, Ivan!), but that would be telling, no? It’s a damn shame their dynasty was cut short by a stupid limo driver. May have to watch some of Vlad’s greatest hits (miss him lots) and let off some steam.

Still haven’t seen word on Toews injury as he didn’t play in the 3rd period. The Hawks won and that’s all good as far as I’m concerned.

@nineone:
Vladdy might have been the guy on those teams most beloved by the fans before the accident…But the team won without him the following year, and the 2002 team still had the same nucleus as the ’96-’97 team he played on. I don’t think the teams that failed to win in the intervening years did so because of weaknesses on the blue line. Hell, had he remained healthy, he probably would have cost Lidstrom a few of those Norris Trophies by splitting the vote.
I do wish I’d gotten to see Vladdy play longer, though. He combined the best of the European game with a tenaciousness and physicality not common amongst players from Europe back then.
