Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

People are complicated. Love is not.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

I made 7 trips to Lowes today to fix a shower in our rental. Cheap fuckers that owned it just fastened the fixture on to of 1/2″ cpvc pipe without mounting it to any kind of bracing. When I tried to get the cartridge out I snapped the pipes. I had to cut a hole in the wall behind it and redo the whole shebang. Then, when I got it back together I didn’t wait long enough for the glue to setup so, when I turned it on the fitting blew. My bride raced outside to turn the water off at the meter and I managed to hold the pipe so the water arched up and ran into the toilet.

eta So we’re watching Homeland and I’m already sick of the faces that woman makes.

    @Comrade Mary:

I see that President Obama is scheduled to be in South Africa later in the week as part of his tour. Given Mandela’s rapidly deteriorating condition, I imagine the POTUS itinerary is fraught with all kinds of contingency plans.

As for Nelson Mandela himself, if it is to be, I hope it happens swiftly and comfortably. I would add “uneventfully,” but given the man’s status, that’s nigh well impossible.

China Said to Have Made Call to Let Leaker Depart

…The Chinese government was pleased that Mr. Snowden disclosed the extent of American surveillance of Internet and telephone conversations around the world, giving the Chinese people a chance to talk about what they describe as American hypocrisy regarding surveillance practices, said Mr. Jin and the person familiar with the consultations between Hong Kong and China…

Two Western intelligence experts, who worked for major government spy agencies, said they believed that the Chinese government had managed to drain the contents of the four laptops that Mr. Snowden said he brought to Hong Kong, and that he said were with him during his stay at a Hong Kong hotel.

If that were the case, they said, China would no longer need or want to have Mr. Snowden remain in Hong Kong…

Some highlights of the new media law passed by Ed Snowden’s future home of Ecuador:

It prohibits so called “media lynching” which is defined as “the dissemination of concerted and reiterative information, either directly or by third parties, through media outlets, with the purpose of undermining the prestige” of a person or legal entity or “reducing [their] credibility.” The provision would allow the authorities to order the media outlet to issue a public apology and states that they are also subject to criminal and civil sanctions, imposed by the courts.

It requires media outlets to issue their own codes of conduct to “improve their internal practices and their communications work” based on a series of requirements such as to “respect people’s honor and reputation.” Although self-regulation of this nature is not in itself problematic, the law provides that any citizen or organization can report that a media outlet violated the requirements, and government authorities can issue a written warning, or impose sanctions.

It says that journalists must “assume the subsequent administrative consequences of disseminating content through the media that undermines constitutional rights, in particular the right to communication, and the public security of the State.” Journalists deemed to violate this responsibility could be subject to civil, criminal or other sanctions.

@Cacti: Journalists deemed to violate this responsibility could be subject to civil, criminal or other sanctions.

So, basically it’s just like here then, is it?

Meanwhile, I told ya’ll – this week’s Bill Keller is all about how ‘important’ Syria is:

It’s hard to tell what has driven Obama even this far. Is it the prodding of critics like Bill Clinton, mocking the president’s poll-minded caution? Is there a belated revulsion at the humanitarian catastrophe? A recognition that diplomacy backed by nothing much — which has been the White House answer until recently — is a fool’s errand? Whether or not you agree with me that America has a big stake in the outcome, you are entitled to wonder: What, exactly, is the strategy?

    Obama: Threat or Menace?

Over tea in a Reyhanli cafe with a view of the Syrian hills, I asked a rebel commander named Abu Jarah how he imagined Syria after Assad. “Maybe Somalia plus Afghanistan,” he replied. That, I allowed, was a pretty horrifying prospect. “Not our mistake,” he said. “It’s not what we want. It’s what you gave us, with two years standing and watching.”

Fuck you, you did that to yourselves. Also: whatever assistance we render, let us make sure not to render any to that guy.

Nobody, except perhaps our enemies, wants to see American troops in Syria. Our aim should be to make life so miserable for Assad and his friends that he agrees, or his sponsors agree, that it is time to stop the killing, send Assad and his circle into exile, and move from blood bath to diplomacy. Is that achievable? I honestly don’t know. But given the certain costs of doing nothing, I think it’s worth a try. I wish I knew whether President Obama felt the same.

Another words, we should take the current horrible situation in a Syria drenched in rivers of blood and turn it into an absolutely catastrophic one in which Syria drowns in an ocean of blood. AUSTERITY! SHARED SACRIFICE!

Got home from Oregon at about 22:15. Realized I had locked myself out of the house by using the handset lock we never use (combination deadbolt)

Had to jimmy open a basement window by repeatedly hammering a chisel under the latch. Crawled in on some super-sketchy cheap-ass plastic shelves, and inched over to the chest freezer on my hands.

Could have dead. Now all jacked up on adrenaline.

    @Yatsuno:
I’m a bad person, because this reminds me of Billy Crystal’s Ethiopian restaurant joke in When Harry Met Sally: “I’ll order two empty plates, and then we’ll leave.”

@The prophet Nostradumbass: Hathaway will be back for next week’s episode according to pbs.org. I notice that one of the guest stars next week is Edward Fox who I think is the father or uncle of the actor who plays Hathaway.

    Sunday Night Shows? Okay…

Does the return of Old Jane signify that Drop Dead Diva has jumped the shark?

    Supermoon did not disappoint.

@Comrade Mary: Yes, I am dreading when the announcement is made that he has passed. My hero. So glad that he lived into his 90s and seems really happy and contented.

    @Patricia Kayden:

But they’re all over the place. Paula Deen’s enablers tell us so.

Here’s NYTimes story on her Savannah restaurant patrons.

With a great picture of your 21st century Southern white lardass, as found in the wild, waiting to tie on the feedbag.
