Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

You cannot shame the shameless.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

I am pretty sure Snowden and Our Lord and Saviour Glenn Greenwald were in cahoots and conspired to do all of this. I would absolutely love it if GG got his ass extradited to the U.S. and he got a taste of the Supermax life, but alas, one can only dream.

In other news, my waistline has definitely grown over the past month. I need to put in some real time, effort, and lack of drinking into getting back in shape. I’ve got to be in peak condition for Hawaii in 7 weeks.

So the IRS was also “targeting” c(4)s that used the words “progressive” and “occupy.” Which means they weren’t really “targeting” anyone at all. They were just doing their damn jobs.

And the only group that actually lost its tax exempt status was a liberal one. So shut the fuck up, baggers!

@Cassidy: It got a bad rep because of Paul Ryan (who, if he wears a backwards cap while doing P90x, is a fool IMO), but it really does work. Easily was in the best shape of my life when I was doing that + following the diet loosely (but strictly from total calorie intake, the kinds of foods I was eating, etc.). Not as concerned about building mass now…more interested in focusing on slimming down a bit and toning up for the beach + half marathon in mid-September.

Oh, and on another note, I love how we magically can find $30 billion to piss away on keeping brown people out of America. God forbid we spend that money on food stamps, scientific research, health care, education, or something that would actually be useful. Just another example how the GOP will vote for government spending as long as it lines the pockets of their contributors and some aspect of the military/industrial complex.

If anything the vote serves to illustrate that IOKIYAR, again, as well as the fact that some Republicans just hate brown people more than bottomless pits of cash money.

I forget where I read it, but all of the money we spent in Iraq and Afghanistan could have provided free public secondary education for everyone who went for the next 50+ years.

Ryan is a douche and anything he said he does would have got a bad rap.

@Comrade Jake: The CW doesn’t know or care, because the Villagers will blame Obama no matter what happens.

That said, something’s going to have to give in the House. No matter how it goes down, I don’t see Boehner coming out alive as Speaker unless he pulls some ‘House of Cards’-style shit with NANCY SMASH, which I don’t see happening. He’s too drunk to give two shits about whether or not he remains Speaker or not.

    Massage.

Massage and Paula Deen and her brother.

I have wandered into the cesspool that is the Paula Deen deposition and caught her in a lie. It’s not about the main point that everyone is going on and on about (her mention of n-word).

But this lie is a tell. Should we believe everything in her deposition?

    The Paula Deen Deposition transcript.
    http://www.scribd.com/doc/148813272/Transcript-of-the-Testimony-of-Paula-Deen-Date-May-17-2013

The complaint in the lawsuit brought by Ms. Jackson
    http://www.scribd.com/doc/148781831/Jackson-v-Deen-Et-Al-Complaint

    I know this is obscure.

Complaint/Jackson states that after she witnessed Paula Deen’s bro violently shake one of the staff members, corporate counsel said that…

“the solution was for someone to bring this individual to Paula Deen’s $13,000,000 home to give him the feeling of being important and to ‘massage’ him. ‘Massaging’ is a term frequently used by Paula Deen.” (you’ll find this in ¶77 on pg 23 of complaint)

So, they’re deposing Paula Deen, and getting her to respond to things mentioned in the complaint. Paula Deen is saying that no, her brother would never lie to her, and the manager who takes Jackson’s side is jealous/gullible, and that everybody has problems with Jackson, etc.

    Shall we believe Paula Deen?

Q: Have you ever used that term as a way of describing making someone feel better, to massage them?

A: No, I massage my meat and I massage my husband sometimes, but that’s about the only time I use that word.
    [transcript, page 53, lines 11-16]

Then, less tha 10 pages of transcript later, Paula Deen gets an expanded vocabulary! She starts to use the word “Massage!” In the exact same way that the complaint says she used it. After denying she uses it, the word just slips out.

Context is about a consulting firm she hired to look into good workplace practices, and their report.
Lisa = Lisa Jackson, the complainant.
    Bubba = Paula’s brother (co-defendant)
Karl = Karl Schumacher CPA for Paula Deen family of Companies

A: I don’t know that I read it… I knew that they had been massaged into what Lisa and Bubba wanted them to — I mean, Lisa and Karl wanted them to think. [p 61 of Deen deposition, lines 6-9, emphasis mine]

Definitely not drinking at all during the week helps out – there was a 2-week period where I had a couple drinks every day (combination of boredom at home, lots of post-work events, and then the weekends) – not helpful at all. But I plan on running it pretty tight until my Seattle/Alaska sojourn…going to have to figure out if I can sneak in a few treadmill runs at the very least.

And sorry to Bruins fans. 2 goals in that short of a time span has to be an absolute dagger.

    And in other Taliban news…
    – The Taliban have said that the 10 climbers shot dead in northern Pakistan were killed by a branch of the militant group set up to target foreigners. They were forced to kneel and shot in the head…
    – The United States and Afghanistan are still waiting to hear from the Taliban about opening peace talks, but remain willing to go ahead with negotiations

I guess “we never negotiate with terrorists” is so-last-year.

Your statement is both hyperbolic and detached from reality. The most powerful nation in the world has been throwing
everything short of nukes at the Taliban for a decade an they’re still able to mount an attack in the capitol. The Russians, whose methods are far more stringent than ours met with the same lack of success. Has it entered your mind that maybe it’s time to try something else? Or shall the most powerful nation in the world squander another ten years’ worth of blood and treasure?

The Taliban are going after Karzai, not a US target. There’s a CIA station nearby and none of the reports mention them attacking that. The greatest likelihood is that the Taliban went after Karzai because of his objections to the US plan to negotiate with them directly.

Kerry seems clueless about reality, and is mouthing off like an asshole trying to make matters worse….

Terming Snowden an indicted felon, Kerry said all appropriate countries have been notified of his status.

“It would be very disappointing if he was willfully allowed to board an airplane” from Hong Kong to Moscow, Kerry said at a news conference with Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid, adding that he “would be deeply troubled” if Russia and China knew of Snowden’s plans, “and there would be, without any question, some effect and impact on the relationship and consequences.”

“I’d urge them to live within the law,” Kerry added. “It’s in the interest of everyone.”

Well it’s pretty ballsy for Kerry to be lecturing Russia and China about living within the law. The US took forever to get their extradition paperwork to Hong Kong, and fucked it up. And we don’t even have an extradition agreement with Russia.

Maybe it seemed like a good idea at the time, but I think Kerry is in over his head as SoS. He just comes across as a doofus.

And all politicians should just stop being “troubled”. Any pompous twerp who blathers about being “troubled” should STFU and head for the nearest fainting couch. They can’t be taken seriously.

    Really?….

Taliban gunmen attacked Afghanistan’s presidential palace and surrounding buildings, including the CIA’s Afghan headquarters, with explosions and gunfire shaking the city centre.

In the past three days the Taliban have executed 10 mountaineers in the Himalayas, attacked the presidential palace in Kabul, and attacked the CIA’s Afghan headquarters. They are not messing around.

If the USA still proceeds with peace negotiations with the Taliban after all that then isn’t it sending out the message to all of America’s foes that it is weak, and will capitulate when placed under pressure?

(I’m not saying that there are any easy options – just that proceeding with peace talks right now is a really bad option.)

    @Mandalay:

I bet a surge of more US troops would totally help right now.

Face it — Afghanistan was lost from the day Bush Jr. decided to invade Iraq instead. Everything we’ve done there ever since was just trying to put a band-aid over the gaping chest wound that is the Taliban.

    ETA:

If the USA still proceeds with peace negotiations with the Taliban after all that then isn’t it sending out the message to all of America’s foes that it is weak, and will capitulate when placed under pressure?

Wasn’t that Cheney’s argument for why we had to invade Iraq under false pretenses? To prove to the Arab world that we weren’t wimps?
