Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Let there be snark.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Bark louder, little dog.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Unfamiliar with the mud, but a friend of mine managed to create an amusing panic at GenCon a few years ago before it moved to Columbus. Walking by a bunch of WoD larpers outside the venue, he casually says “I burn a rage point”. Suddenly, every faux vampire within earshot gave the hand sign for invisibility because no one wanted to mess what what they expected to be a raging werewolf.

Obsessing about my BBQ tomorrow. There’s the slow cook ribs; I’ll be using a webber kettle with a smokenator insert for those. I’ve got a tri-tip that I’ll do on a Lodge cast iton hibachi that i custom made a domed lid for.

Also there’s the slab of fresh ahi tuna that I scored which I’ll do by half filing a charcoal chimney starter and put a grill grate on top of it. Once those coals are blazing It’s like searing with the exhast of an F-16.

Then of course I’ll have two rotisserie chickens going on the gas grill.

Now, how to I do the peppers and onions and squash? And, there’s that pack of incredible natural casing hotdogs….

Question for the fellow BBQ fanatics: there will be plenty of space in the webber kettle with the ribs cuz I have a rib rack but do peppers and squash like slow cook temps?

@Redshirt: My eldest son (24) came to me with a request that I couldn’t refuse, he asked me for my D&D campaign materials, so we went to the office and filled up a crate, included were 2nd edition copies of the following:

    Unearthed Arcana
    Fiend Folio
    Monster Manual II
    Deities and DemiGods
    Wilderness Survival Guide
    Dungeoneers Survival Guide
1979 edition of Dungeon Masters Guide (w/cardboard screen complete with saving throw tables)
First Edition Forgotten Realms adventures 1 thru 5 complete with map of the City of Waterdeep
    One Homemade dungeon
2 reams of square grid graph paper
1 ream of hex graph paper
and six 2nd edition beginners level official D&D modules that he says that he’s been lusting after for the last 8 years plus about 200.00 worth of assorted dice including everything from 4 sided to 100 sided and about six matched sets of marbled dice sets for each player (assorted colors)

I sighed a lot that evening but the smile on his face made it all seem a whole lot better….

Does anyone remember a post by Tim F (or maybe DougJ) from a few years back about how we’ve become a nation where it’s impossible for people in power who get it wrong to be discredited for good (nor their ideas), and we keep getting the same wrong people with the same wrong ideas over and over?

It was a great post and I’m having trouble finding it and would love a pointer if anyone knows it.

U.S. Postal Service Logging All Mail for Law Enforcement

Mr. Pickering was targeted by a longtime surveillance system called mail covers, a forerunner of a vastly more expansive effort, the Mail Isolation Control and Tracking program, in which Postal Service computers photograph the exterior of every piece of paper mail that is processed in the United States — about 160 billion pieces last year. It is not known how long the government saves the images.

Why I stopped putting return address on mail about 40 years ago or so, when it came out that the FBI had teamed with the Post Office to do something similar with mail on college campuses.

That is so damned dumb it actually makes my molars ache. How are they going to process all of those photos, hire an infinite number of monkeys to go over them for an infinite amount of time?

  26. 26.

    MikeJ

    July 4, 2013 at 5:03 am

@Higgs Boson’s Mate: The intent isn’t to process all of them. The intent is to have the data on hand once they have a suspect so they can check their activities before they learned of him.
Which doesn’t make it excusable, but it does make it possible.

WTF? No good versdion? Jimmy Hendix’s musical version (yeah, no words) was the best version ever. AS for postal photo’s of all letters, I would guess they use that after the fact – (all letters are readible by computer – names/addresses/zips) so they just see what a given person/address/post office has to offer over a period of time using a database/scan. Not real time watching would be my guess.
