I (mostly) blame Faux.
Just Some Fuckhead
There’s nothing constructive about criticism. That’s a red herring, or should be.
Baud
It’s like how the History Channel is no longer about history.

I am happy for Jay and his newly liberated life.
We like to think things have never been worse, but for many years I have understood that the mid 20th century golden age of serious journalism was the fluke. Yellow journalism is the normal state, and we’re merely reverting to it.
Shakezula
Hey now, CNN does too bring you important news. Why, here is this vitally important news thing about the perils of cat poop. News you can use people!
(Correction: CNN is Atlanta‘s Pressed Corpse.)

I used to watch CNN, back when they had Bobbie Battista reading the news. I thought that having a cross-eyed anchor was both charming and significant. But that was then.

And just as “Newsroom” is about to begin its second season.

@Baud: Or the learning channel is no longer about learning. I don’t get cable where I live and I don’t even miss it anymore. Seeing snooze hour once a week is enough to keep up with our brain dead media corpse.

CNN sucks. Not as bad as Faux. MSNBC also sucks but I do like Maddow.

@different-church-lady: dcl, great analogy. I think we should just go back to those scathing newspaper cartoons from the 19th century. The golden age of TV news was what I grew up with in the 50s; short, true and newsworthy.

Jeff Gauvin @JeffersonObama1m
Presidents included a doubling in the S&P were Obama, Eisenhower, Reagan & Clinton but none came close to the 18% Obama annual return.
Jeff Gauvin @JeffersonObama6m
Correction, Coolidge’s record is with the DJIA, and Obama has the record with the S&P.
Jeff Gauvin @JeffersonObama7m
Calvin Coolidge 25.5% annual S&P return, Obama at 18%, Bill Clinton’s AVG. S&P return was 15.2%, with Ike and Reagan in 4th and 5th place.
Jeff Gauvin @JeffersonObama11m
When FDR died in 1945, the S&P 500 was 141% higher vs 105% for Obama, but at an annual rate of gain was only 7.5% vs 18% so far for Obama
Jeff Gauvin @JeffersonObama13m
Over all, the world’s stock markets outside the United States have risen less than two-thirds as much as the American one has.
Jeff Gauvin @JeffersonObama13m
The US stock market has done better since early 2009 than any of the next nine largest economies in the world. Only India came close.
Jeff Gauvin @JeffersonObama15m
More than 52 months after Obama took office, the S&P 500 was up 106% during his term in office, for a compound annual gain of 18%. #Economy

He’s clearly getting out of the game none too soon. He called someone writing for Politico a journalist.

I generally only watch local news. I can pause my TV, so I do that, zip through all the headlines, watch something if it seems relevant to me, watch the weather if I’m so inclined and turn it off. Whole thing takes about four minutes. At least local news might affect my life, like a road closure or storm heading my way.
Jewish Steel
CNN’s coverage of this trial may well be sensationalist and devoid meaningful commentary. That doesn’t distinguish it much from the rest of cable news.
But I can think of one constituency who would have a legitimate interest in how this trial played out. Black people. Sounds like CNN is a place where they could watch that happen.

@different-church-lady: That’s probably a true statement. Still, we could really benefit from better journalism, so I’m not going to stop demanding it.

If you can make it through the copious amounts of commercials, it’s a truly awful channel (it’s really amazing how often random channel switching to CNN ends up on a commercial). Even the new morning show is the worst of all the news shows (and I do mean all of them). I recall Cristiane Amanpour telling Jon Stewart that the “new” CNN would be really, really good. Guess she was trying to make a good impression on her new job.
schrodinger's cat

@Keith: This is very true. I can watch CNN, MSNBC and Fox one the TVs on the treadmills at the gym (among a bunch of other channels). I kind of know where they are on the channel lineup, but when I turn to them they are so often commercials and it takes five minutes or so to figure out which of them I’ve landed on.

Speaking of commercials my local Time Warner peeps must be on some serious drugs at the moment cause the commercials are all screwed up, some come on in the middle of the commercial, or even at the very end (Vista Print is one of them) other ones (Progressive) abruptly stop before the end and another commercial starts, it seems to happen when the commercial is preceded by or followed by a Time Warner commercial, which basically means that an advertiser is paying Time Warner for time that Time Warner is stealing from the advertiser. If I were paying them good money for a commercial in prime time and they did that to me I would be pissed.

Seems like some others are upset with CNN as well:
“Foreign media outfits perceived as being sympathetic to Islamists are being attacked, with CNN and al-Jazeera TV singled out for hostility. The US news network has been vilified by protesters as being pro-Brotherhood, partly because it described the military’s move as a coup.”
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/09/egyptian-state-media-backs-military
(Do check out the accompanying photo: “CNN Shame on You” has real potential.)
CNN, even CNN International, as pro-Islamist is one of the most hilarious things I’ve read today.
Keith
@Violet: I finally gave up on CNN altogether (well, not counting spending a minute being horrified by how pedantic their new morning show was) when I flipped to The Situation Room and sat through a few commercials only to see Wolf Blitzer come on to say, “When we return, we’ll look at so-and-so”, after which, they went back to more commercials.

@Litlebritdifrnt: Similarly, Recently, when I’m trying to up my geek points by watching various treks, I’m getting those running on top of other ads too. sometimes, it’s the same ad, running with slightly different start times. quannlace
And to complete the crankiness, remember when A&E and Bravo actually had cultural programs?
Eric U.
I think there would be a real market for a news channel without all the panels of people arguing and the pontificating by the spokesmodels. When CNN shows a few minutes of CNN international, it’s like a breath of fresh air. Even back in ’90 when I was in the Gulf it was far superior to the standard CNN. I guess we can’t be trusted with such a thing.
Josie
I have completely weaned myself from watching any cable news channels and am a much happier person because of it. I can get all the news I need from the internet and from local channels. I am amazed that the cable news channels are successful in having enough viewers to be able to pay their bills. People must be really desperate for entertainment.

@quannlace:
A&E used to show seriously good shit, like the Hornblower adaptations, but MBA vermin got involved and cancelled any further Hornblower because not enough quarterly ROI.
Any notion of long term viewer loyalty has been obliterated by the “did we score some profit in the last 30 seconds?” mindset.
Villago Delenda Est
@Eric U.:
There may be a market, but it’s small, too small to interest the Ferengi who run the show nowadays. CNN used to be (as pointed out above) about actually gathering news, not having panels of talking heads talking, which is the Faux model. The endless concern about monetary profit being the only reason for any corporation to exist drives out everything else.
SFAW
@Shakezula:
Not to be more of a dork than necessary, but: when Mrs. SFAW was pregnant with the SFAW-ette, we made sure that she did not change the cat box, because of the (real) dangers. Yes, the likelihood was low that something bad would have happened, but “low” does not equal “zero,” so I was happy (relatively) to take care of it.
Although, my gut was large enough that I looked like I was 5-6 months along myself, so maybe I should have found another stooge to handle it.
Other than that, CNN sucks majorly; maybe they should change their slogan to “America’s Finest News Sourse.”

Eric U.
to some extent, I don’t care if CNN has sideshows on all the time. It’s better than when they decided they should be Fox Jr. I am somewhat disturbed that they seem to have picked people that think it’s ok for a man to shoot someone because he is losing a fight that he started

My wife & I are weening ourselves off HGTV – “House Hunters” doesn’t even bothering visiting homes actually for sale. We’ve become annoyed by all of the shows about whiney Toronto folks bitching about not being able to find the right house for under $750,000.
I stopped watching anything on the TLC long before it became Ground Zero for the Quiverful Movement. Some of the popcorn fluff now on HGTV, Food Network, NatGeo, History & etc can be fun to watch, but most of the shows I just catch on occassion.
I used to watch Headline News in the morning (when it is ostenibly still news), but it’s been nothing but trial coverage since that stupid Jody Arias trial. So CNN has 2 networks with the same coverage of the stupid trial. While I feel that the verdict will be important, the actual trial is about as boring as boring can get. When they’re not fluffing some boring trial, Headline News is pretty much the most vapid conventional wisdom.
The news is just terrible.

HEY
I have just been released from Cole’s basement. From Cole’s damp, sticky, and smelly basement…where I’ve been chained to an ancient, corroded radiator next to Assidy.
For a fucking week.
In the dark.
In the pitch black dark of hell.
Next to Assidy.
The things I have heard and felt…against me during that time…are seared into the now crusted skin of what was once my soul. For all time.
Assidy, as I suspected, is less than fully human, and after a week in Cole’s cellar there has been pronounced deterioration.
Get out.
Get out now.
There was however, pleasure and even romance to be had down there in the 24 hour blackness, among the dog and cat leavings…among the…desicated…remains of what can only have once been Betty Cracker’s unspeakably rotten…heart. I HOPE to God it was her heart; as I say I couldn’t see a fucking thing.
But yes, there was…intimacy of a sort. And now I fear Assidy has taken a liking to me beyond what was ever meant to be implied by my desperate allowance of his frantic, pathetic, and appalling thrustings. Oh dear god the thrustings! But yes! Allow them I did and don’t judge me!
It was what I had to do to survive.
And so now I am back among the living out here, and back among the semi dead souls of the Botsplainers here at BJ. (Oh my god, the BJs…the BJs…DOWN THERE IN THE DARK!)
And I owe no explanations. No apologies.
And I have NO regrets.
Some where deep down inside, I am still Ted.
And Hellen too.
NO REGRETS.

I love “Property Brothers” for that very reason, they show the clients with a budget of $450K the “dream home” and then tell them that the home is on the market for $1.5million. I have given up on TV news myself. I remember the halcyon days of the early ’90s when Headline News was just that; the headline stories, repeating every half hour. I would leave it on all day long as I read or worked around the house. Something about its predictable cycle was very comforting to my Asperger-y brainz. Then came the Internet and Fox News (roughly in that order) and fucked it all up, transmogrifying it into all trial all the time. I swear to God I think Jodi Arias should go free and Nancy Grace receive the death penalty.

Yes. Unquestionably. If you’re fortunate enough to be in a US media market that now offers Al Jazeera English (once it begins to air, Al Jazeera America will have a wider distribution), do watch it. You’ll be astonished at how much is going on in the world and how myopic and insipid is the American broadcast/cable media.
As a consequence of severe budget cuts initiated during the Blair regime, the BBC is but a pale shadow of its once honorable and trustworthy enterprise. BBC America is simply a bad joke visited upon the former colonists. Its lead anchor, Katty Kay, regularly appears on the Morning Joe frat party and her contributions there exemplify what the BBC has become.

Maybe CNN should NOT have cancelled Crossfire. I think that incident scared them away from really trying to occupy the center or to “keep them honest”.
